Apparently at first the NFF told the coach there was no money to name 4 alternates. Then, they changed their mind and have imposed on the coach that two of those alternate spots must go to veteran players that the coach actually doesn't want in his squad. Weird stuff. https://scorenigeria.com.ng/exclusive-scandal-rocks-super-falcons-final-olympics-squad/ I'm kind of amazed that Randy Waldrum is still coaching Nigeria. He keeps siding with the players and pointing out where the Federation isn't spending money. Olympique_de_Marseille

Olympique_de_Marseille
Smith should have been included. This is one call where I strongly disagree with Priestman. Edit, even given her answer, I still disagree: Edited July 1 by Olympique_de_Marseille
red card
Shades of World Cup selection again as Priestman went with trust over form. Collins & Prince are locks if fit but the former hasn't played at all this year while the latter has had only some minutes. D. Rose hasn't shown anything since her injury at the club or national team level. Priestman said Smith isn't fit enough to play the 90 with the short Olympic turn arounds but yet she selected 4 players who won't be able to do the same. And in the presser, Priestman said her selections had nothing to do with fitness but then said Beckie and Collins being able to run all day was a selection factor. red card
American/British Women's Soccer Show preview of Group A placed Canada third but in a close call with Colombia. They still think Canada is still in a funk from the labour issues and underfunding. But at least for the Olympics, given $2m+ OTP funding, it shouldn't be. Canada has had the same number of friendlies and camps as the other teams (ex CAF teams that skipped the last window). And Canada Soccer is sending 18 non-players to the Olympics which must be a record. There are 5 coaches and 1 analyst. Support team includes 3 therapists, 2 sports science, 1 chiropractor, 1 doctor, 1 mental performance coach, 1 ops support, 1 media attaché, 1 equipment manager and 1 team manager. red card
Footy Prime's Broadscast gave us their take on the Olympic squad. Wales manager Rhian Wilkinson seemed to be more understanding of Priestman's selections while Claire Rustad was more questioning. Notable points mentioned was Collins picked for her left foot. Dr. Rustad said bone injuries like Collins suffered are easier to recover from but not having match minutes makes it a risky pick. D. Rose is a direct replacement for the potential of a not ready/injured Prince. Squad has quickness but not pace or players not willing to show their pace. Midfield is slow. So, this made inclusion of Prince & D. Rose necessary. Smith's fitness issue could be prone to concussions as she suffered one during Gold Cup and at least once at Sporting. rkomar, Canuckia and narduch 1

Assistant coach Michael Mayne will act as head coach for the games. Jitka Klimková has opted to stand down after conclusion of an independent workplace employment investigation which cleared her. However, Klimková has taken the view that due to concerns in relation to the team environment, her wellbeing, and a restorative process having not been completed, it would not be the right time for her to return. She had already missed the friendlies in the last window for personal reasons. red card
Once in a while, Carle pens a piece for Radio-Canada or RDS. Post the squad announcement, she says: Today, my heart is broken. ....Is this a scenario I expected? Not at all. Is this a decision I understand? Nope. But the question is no longer whether I agree with this decision. At this point, it has already happened and there is nothing I can do about it. It is now a question of how I can continue to move forward, to grow regardless of how the outside world has shaped my path. 3 Years ago, after the call announcing my role as a reservist in Tokyo, I had spent a week in bed, going out only to train and, sometimes, but not always, to eat. For me, it was a moment that defined my value, that indicated that I was not up to it. I was ashamed. This year, I am facing a misunderstanding and a lot of disappointment, but my value, it remains intact in my eyes. I am the same player today that I was before the Olympic selection was announced, it is not a title that defines me. https://www.rds.ca/soccer/jeux-de-paris-le-coeur-brise-1.19322664 Olympique_de_Marseille and Canuckia

You can't train right, you are in the conditions you will be playing in. Into the 30s and at night always over 20, so you need AC 24/7. Sounds like someone on the CSA staff liked the beaches or golfing. Before the last one they were in San Sebastian where they played Spain in a warmup and that area would have been perfect. red card
France defeated Sweden 2-1 in Dijon to clinch a Euro 2025 spot. France largely dominated but Sweden as usual got a corner kick goal. Spain & Germany were upset today but having already qualified for Euro 2025, they didn't field A+ squads. But Spain lost to last place Czechia 2-1 in Chomutov. Germany lost 3-0 to second place Iceland in Rejkjavik. Unnamed Trialist
red card
Canada's other 2 group foes played friendlies today. The Football Ferns drew Zambia 1-1 in Vichy. red card
Collins fractures her other leg while playing versus Nigeria. Carle moves from alternate to the 18 person squad.
