Paris Olympics 2024

For some reason, Edmonton leads cities in Google search interest for football at the Olympics. Calgary also in top 5 while Toronto is in top 10. By country, Canada is ranked 4th.

Canada is ranked third in terms of women's team interest.

Shireen Ahmed on CBC's Paris Tonight said that if Canada wins the last game, maybe we'd finish 3rd in the group, blah blah blah.

Drones worse than the Ben Johnson scandal? Can't game out scenarios involving just the last 2 games in the group?

Why did CBC send a complete idiot to the Olympics?

Especially one that doesn't believe in Canada's existence.

Kind of interesting that after 0 draws in 18 group stage games, 3 of the 4 QFs were tied after two halves.

I'd really like the penalty shootout in knockout games to come after 90 and count for 0.5 goals. Then play 20 minutes of extra time. Would make for some exciting action and interesting strategizing with substitutions.

Though I have not seen the match in its entirety yet, a big moment in the Spain-Colombia game was in the 75th minute when Ramirez picked up a clearance from her side of centre on the left, proceeded to go on an incredible run to jinx her way past three Spanish defenders, close in on goal but didn't have the juice needed to have enough pace on her shot to get it past Coll. Two minutes later, the Colombian keeper flapped at a cross that led to Hermoso's opening goal.  Fine lines!

Where would I go to see a full match, being in Canada now? Do I have to sign into CBC Gem or something?

I haven't even seen highlights of that one yet.

CBC Gem has it and many other matches (except Colombia-NZ, for some reason).  You can get all the sports.  It is very impressive.

Just register then sign in.  Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

cbcsports.ca/olympics also has replays.  No need to log in.

I didn't see the Colombia Spain game featured there, just Canada-Germany and France-Brazil, unless I am missing something.

Thanks so much, and to @rkomar, others. I also like to see certain races, like 800, 1500, I even like to check out the heats.

Colombia has had an interesting 2 years, quarter finals in Australia, almost beating France, being so close to Canada and Spain. I've seen Caicedo play and I think she's overrated, or else ineffective, but Mayra is tremendous, if they fill in the pieces they'll be an impressive squad.

Agreed:  Colombia are still a few pieces away from being in the next echelon of teams.  I'm not sure Caicedo was that healthy (knee issues) but she definitely has that quality of making something out of little, even when regularly double teamed.  A couple of their back ups weren't very good (the player with the white hand band stood out in that way) while the back line is prone to marking breakdowns

As much as I really liked our back line play, we caught a major break not having to face the suspended Ramirez, probably the best forward in the world right now.  With good technique and "edge," she also outmuscles smaller defenders and outruns slower CBs marking her.  She makes the attacking players around her better.

Foward play is what holds us back from being at the next level.  We have to run a composite, forward/striker-by-committee approach because none of the players we used here has a complete enough package in her skillset, so they are role player types, selected based on tactical and game management situations.  That's why I am curious to see how Smith does in WSL this season.

Contrast the ability of Colombia to show that their breakthrough at the WWC a year ago was not a one-off with what was seen from Australia here. They, along with France, were the most disappointing teams in the tourney, and based on what I saw here as well as at the Sinclair Farewell in Vancouver, their WSL attacking types are pretty overrated.

Cata Coll, Spain keeper, decided semis was the day to have her worst day ever, just a disaster from start to finish. Then Olga Carmona, hero of the World Cup, burnt on the two 1st half Brazil goals.

This total switching off is really disheartening. Disappointing to watch a team like Spain spin into this amateur mode and gift a final to the Brazilians, who I don't think are anywhere near the quality of the other semi finalists.

Át least we can give Germany credit for being a tough rival and the States for getting the minimum they have needed to keep going in the tournament. It is probably not good for women's football to have the States win again, it would be better to have more rivalry, but Spain in brain-fart mode all game--and they were down two vs. Colombia as well-- has been hard to swallow.

I thought Brazil just outworked Spain and showed more grit out there.  They pressed well, closed down well, and we're just hungrier.  They also did the usual "streetwise" fake injury delays to sabotage momentum.  They exposed a loose back line and questionable goalkeeping.  They did the job needed.  Kudos to them.

You would have thought that the Colombia match would have been a suffiicient wake up call but Spain was caught again looking ahead of the opponent instead of keeping their eyes on the ball.  To quote a Neil Young song lyric, they "got burnt!  And with both feet on the ground!"

I don't see Brazil getting by "U-S-A!" but you never know, right?  That's why you play the games.

Solid bronze game from Spain, dominating but losing. I was pissed after the semi but at least this was properly played. Germany has no attack and only got a penalty themselves. A penalty for Spain was stopped at the final minute.

One of the stories of world women's football: there are no truly killer strikers who are technical and drive defences nuts. Just players who stuff stats vs lesser teams.

I'm a big fan but there are a few players for Spain in diva mode at times. Like Paredes, who made a dumbass statement saying she wouldn't accept any criticism for their semis performance, when it was precisely the sort of game you have to say the opposite. She was benched for the bronze game, good for the coach.

Rusted is a solid colour commentator and argued there should be 16 women's teams in the Olympics like the men. I agree but the men's is not even a full senior tournament. With Euros and women's Nation's Leagues, does it make sense to have a mini WC in between full WCs? At least it's clear crowds for the women have improved and there's interest.

Arguably, the best in Canadian soccer.

Who's the play by play? She butchers all the Spanish names, can't even pronounce the names of Ballon d'or winners like Bonmatí. I mean, it's just a few names of world football stars, which they complain aren't respected like the men.

If you think women's football should be treated better, damn well treat it better.

Even Rustad gets that right, tries at least, but can't do basic double ll in Spanish (closer to a y), and calls the Spanish keeper "col" , Spanish for cabbage. Respect?

They were saying that a problem is we don't see a lot of the women in their club play to know what they're really like, but it's the same with them, they've never watched a Spanish league game in their lives, even if just to learn pronunciation.

Watching the men's final and the British pair get the pronunciations more or less right, even most of the accents (exception: Fermín)
