When TFC is playing the ball into space either on the wing or between the midfield and defense and are breaking 4 on 3, it’s not the CBs that are the problem. It’s either the fact the midfield isn’t tracking back or the manager has the wrong set up. That being said, the amount of errant simple passes or the recipient not moving towards it or not holding it up was rather amazing. That just put the defense under enormous pressure all match. It’s really a combination of stuff all over the pitch on defense. It was actually comical to watch Lassiter tracking back on Bernadeschi's first goal. It was like he decided we was going to sprint to the post, no matter where Berna was. Acres of space and all the time in the world to pick his spot for the goal. Not even a hint of closing him down. True. But that is a sure sign of MLS outside defending. Just sag in and defend the 6 yard box and a bit more. If you look at the Sounders goal yesterday, same thing, think it is Laborda who instead of going out to meet an attacker outside the box, backtracks, unnecessarily, and lets him easily centre in. It is something you see over and over again, weak outside defending, no help, no trust in your teammates behind you, extremely rare to see defending 2 on 1 or 3 on 2 against a wide attack. Lassiter is not a WB, he has no defensive instincts. Just another example of stubbornly trying to play someone out of position because they are athletic enough. An athlete requires the mental side just as much as the athletic side.
phil03
Honestly, if Courtois can't turn this around he ought to be sacked. Yes, there are the circumstances but it should have been his job to not let him get as bad as it is... PegCityCam

I'd argue that basically any club in a salary cup environment who was attack-oriented would suffer mightily in such circumstances. And suffer mightily they are. Oof. narduch
I wonder if Courtois regrets taking this job. He probably could have waited it out in Columbus and got that job after Nancy moves on. Which may be by end of year.

I don't see happy campers in this squad right now, just too many fingerpointing "me" guys.

WestHamCanadianinOxford
Was only able to see highlights but Montreal looked more solid - save the goalkeeping distribution. Made some chances, just poor finishing. (Some nice passes by Piette which is encouraging).

InglewoodJack
The ultras had a massive banner showing support for Courtois that they flew before the game. After the game when the team came to meet the supporters, they brought the banner up and LC legitimately looked like he was on the verge of tears. They better keep him around for the long term. mtlfan
Does anyone know why Piette was not suspended for the match against the Union although he had accumulated 5 yellow cards.

If you go 5 matches without getting a yellow your number gets reduced. Could that be it?

costarg
This is such a poor backline. Or maybe formation, system and defensive coaching? What ever it is the back 3 just look terrible, no one is ever marked properly. Too much space to pass, setup and shoot. We're making life really hard for Sirois. Helps now that all the attacking power is back. We can expect lots of high scoring games both ways.

U18 teams will have the ability to roster a select number of overage players and more information will be shared by MLS NEXT prior to the 2024-25 season. The reserve team will end its activities this fall at the end of the season in Ligue1 Québec. The Club has also announced that it will field a third team in MLS NEXT as of the 2024-2025 season, in the U15 category. “These changes help align our strategy with modern soccer, where athletes are turning professional at younger and younger ages,” said CF Montréal Academy Director Marinos Papageorgopoulos. “We want to continue to provide opportunities for young people within our Club, particularly by continuing to grow in the first team environment. In addition, our excellent relationships with the Canadian Premier League and the USL Championship offer, via loans, other interesting avenues for youth development. This change is very positive for our development system, and we will continue to invest in adding a third team. Moving forward, all Academy teams will follow the same schedule and benefit from MLS infrastructures. The dissolution of our reserve team at the end of the season in Ligue1 Québec will mean some player departures. I would like to thank all the players for their contribution and wish them the best of luck in the future." costarg
