York United - 2024 Season Thread

Toronto FC's game against Miami changed times. When that news came out they made it sound like there were tickets still available. The time of the game was more convenient for my young family so I was curious enough to check, assuming if there were any tickets they would be crazy expensive. I think the cheapest I saw was a bit over $230 and the only other non reseller ticket was more than $800. So out of curiosity I looked at what tickets are going for these days. Looks like the cheapest in the east and west stands are a bit over $80. So it would be $320 for a family of 4 in the cheap seats. York United on the other hand, without a flash sale you can get tickets for closer to $20 a ticket. So a family of 4 can go to a York United game for $80 instead of just 1 person going to a TFC game. Hopefully the fans in Toronto eventually pick up on the value that York United provides.

Removed "plus tax and ticketmaster" because apparently ticketmaster is actually including that in the prices they show now! Progress!

After all that talk about York popping a big crowd last night they get 1824. Good crowd for York, but would be a record low for every other club in the league. Just shows how far uphill York have to climb to gain relevance.

Maybe a full offseason with their new owners will help, but who knows.

Team crowds are currently 20% up over last season and this match is up 55% over the equivalent match from last season. I guess a team from Toronto can never truly have good news without perpetual hand-wringing.

Why not have Bobby Smyniotis on the coaching staff for this game , with all due respect to Mauro Eustaquio this guy has accomplished nothing compared to Smyniotis . Moreover, with all the players Bobby has had a hand in coaching and developing that are currently on the national team it would be a no brainer . If it’s because he might miss a game coaching Forge or a few training sessions with Forge i I doubt it would have much of an effect this Forge team is a well oiled machine and I’m sure a few days and a game without Smyniotis would have much of an effect .

Doubt it's a coincidence that he is Stephen Estaquio's brother when it comes to being hired. He also may already be on the way out where York are concerned given this just happened:

That hire means York likely weren't going to miss him very much during the international window. In contrast, if you are Bob Young you likely would view a Bobby Smyrniotis CMNT involvement as a case of going AWOL given he's the head honcho rather than the guy placing all the cones for the next training drill.

I didn't know our MNT did not have anyone capable of "placing all the cones for the next training drill". How did they ever survive?

When I read this line about Kibato "He has since made more than 100 professional appearances between the CPL and the United Soccer League (USL), including 10 with Vancouver in 2024, scoring three times." I thought they were saying he scored 3 this season for Vancouver. But he has scored 3 goals in his career, none this season.

On another topic, what's the deal with Brian Wright? York United needs him back, is he hurt? What's his injury? I don't remember hearing/seeing anything. I never get a chance to watch the pre-game, where presumably they would mention him.

Yesterday's One Soccer broadcast said that Wright has an ankle injury

Max Ferrari got caught walking on the goal that Valour scored. He was the wrong side of his man through the whole play and just jogged back instead of putting in the tiniest bit of effort to get goal side of him. Really disappointing to see.

Anyways, luckily York didn't lose ground to any of the top 4, with Forge losing York actually gained a tiny bit of ground on them, and Ottawa and Cavalry tied to keep pace.

Four big Main Stage interviews from The Allstate Soccer show in Mississauga on Sun Sep 15/24. Includes details of the CPL, NSL (new women's league), League1 Canada, and Canadian national teams men's and women's.  Lots of pics too!   Elijah Adekugbe is on stage in one.

The youth teams will look nice in a few years, these dev deal players keep getting younger.

In theory the longer the teams exist the better they should get at finding and developing youth players. Developmental cycles are typically a decade-plus (I think I went on a tangent on this subject on this forum recently). When York begins the fifteen year olds don't suddenly get better, they're capturing kids who were six or seven or eight when the club began. We're only just starting to see the beginning of that.

I fully agree, it’s not a coincidence that our NT’s best players were all 7-9 when the MLS came to town in Toronto. That’s just the 1.0 version.

The 2005’s will produce some players based on the CPL popping up, in 2019, but it’s really 2010 upwards that will show the sharpest growth and really produce higher end players.

However, we are seeing results as of the 2007 group.
