CONCACAF NATIONS LEAGUE 2022/2023 - Group Stage
Canada vs Honduras
Tuesday, March 28 2023
8pm Eastern / 5pm Pacific
BMO Field, Toronto
Broadcast:
ONESoccer, FuboTV

Tickets:
The Voyageurs section is sold out.
https://www.ticketmaster.ca/event/10005E4E24B807E9 (tickets for the non-Voyageurs sections)

Scenarios:
A win or a draw and we qualify for the CONCACAF Nations League "Final Four" tournament in Las Vegas in mid-June.

Canada Squad:
https://canadasoccer.com/news/canada-squad-announced-for-concacaf-nations-league-matches-in-march-2023/
Hiebert has since been included and Miller was ruled out.

Honduras Squad:
https://twitter.com/FenafuthOrg/status/1635702343906754560
Alberth Elis has since been ruled out because he lost his Green Card!

Canadian players that are suspended:
🟥Vitória (due to a yellow card in two seperate matches)

Canadian players that are on a yellow card:
🟨Borjan
🟨Buchanan
🟨David
🟨Henry (was not called into the squad)
🟨Hoilett (was not called into the squad)
🟨Larin
🟨Laryea

I'm not quite sure if this list matters if we qualify for the CNL Final Four; it may since only "Single yellow cards will get eliminated" but it isn't super clear about a suspension resulting from 2 yellows in two separate games being carried over or not. https://www.concacaf.com/nations-league/regulations/

23.9. Cautions and suspensions:
23.9.1. Cautions received during any other competition are not carried over to The Competition.
23.9.2. Pending match suspensions (in relation to the direct red card or an indirect red card) will be carried over to The Competition.
23.9.3. Single yellow cards will get eliminated at the end of the Concacaf Nations League group stage and shall not be carried over to the Concacaf Nations League Finals.
23.9.4. Two (2) cautions received in different games during The Competition shall result in automatic suspension for the next game in The Competition.
23.9.5. Red card (direct or indirect) suspensions shall be served regardless of the stage of The Competition.
23.9.6. Unserved suspensions outstanding at the end of a team’s participation in The Competition will be carried over to the next official match of the player’s National Team per the FIFA Disciplinary Code and, upon its entry into force, the Concacaf Disciplinary Code.

The Referee:
Iván Barton of El Salvador
https://twitter.com/desigarbitrales/status/1638273147416858642
He was a ref at the World Cup and LOVES to give out yellow cards.
Many will recall when he was our ref vs Martinique at the Gold Cup in 2021 and we got 6 yellow cards and Martinique got 3.

The weather:
Probably partly cloudy and ~3°C.
No crazy snowfall or rain expected and the pitch shouldn't be frozen.

Any mistakes or anything interesting I missed?

Barton is a very expressive ref - lots of hand gestures, smiles & touching/chatting with players.

He's more than 5 years younger than Atiba & is a chemistry prof.

It funny because I was going to start this thread...but I was like nahhh let me wait for the @Olympique_de_Marseille to do it the way nobody else does. (However, if anyone else does he's set the standard of expectation)

Could use a big Davies game here. He’s been relatively quiet for the past several games, facing an underdog at home feels like as good a time as ever to put some serious work in.

In the context of him playing a defined role within a system that optimizes the talent throughout the squad, I agree.  But I don't want to see him try to put the team on his back and almost singlehandedly get us across the line.  The latter has rarely led to a better outcome than the former IMO.

Either or for me, TBH. Supporting the team at large is always a good thing, but eventually our world beating, best XI, best of the best player is going to have to put the team on his back and pull some superstar stuff- that's the point in having players like Davies on your team- this type of player can actually pull that stuff off. I would be thrilled with a nice 3-0 win where he gets a couple assists or just moves the ball well and doesn't make mistakes, but he's due for another Panamaesque goal one of these days, and would love a game that just reminds us exactly how great a player he is and how on a good day, there's nothing the opponent can throw at him to slow him down.

You could see a bit of this effort in the Curacao game, but with his speed and absolute finesse, the pitch was obviously not cooperating- you could tell he was trying to guesstimate how hard to touch the ball for it to go where he wanted, but just by virtue of playing at BMO, a lot of what led to nothing on Saturday should lead to big chances.

For the good guys of course😇

Seriously, no words can express the level of hatred I have for Honduras. I hate their players, I hate the air that they breathe!

I met some Costa Ricans in Curacao and they have the same opinion of the Hondurans as we do.  They think all the Central American countries have this thing against Honduras.  From a purely football sense of course.
