Kadeisha started and is still on for Chelsea. Winner plays Barça in semis. Other semi final is Wolfsburg - Arsenal. Chelsea got a VAR penalty decision right at the death. Fleming came in late in second extra time and scored one of the penalties. Buchanan was okay to slightly subpar as was most of Chelsea's team. Lyon's front line wasn't scary in the first half but then Hegerberg did play the second half. Kerr just ran around a lot, James dangled a fair bit and Chelsea kept crossing ball into the box where Renard and Gilles ruled. In the end Chelsea were very lucky to get the penalty at the death. I was cursing James for not shooting but then she did a meaningless run in the box and drew a penalty from a Lyon defender who should have known better: bad bad play. Fleming has ice in her veins or maybe she and Messi have a bet on to see who can shoot the ball slowest and still score a penalty. Gilles should have taken a penalty for Lyon. Fleming really has to move though as she seems more and more peripheral in Chelsea. Her lack of physical play is hurting her. Majority interest in Lyon is reportedly being sold to Michele Kang who owns the Washington Spirit. This means OL Reign is on the selling block - the third NWSL team currently looking for new owners. John Textor, who owns 40% of Crystal Palace & also owns Botafogo via Eagle Football Holdings and was former head of fubo, bought Lyon last year and is apparently not a fan of women's football. He had tweeted after the USWNT won the 2019 World Cup: Women deserve equal pay for equal performance, but the USWNT may not be the best example, especially when an U-15 boys team can beat them by a 3-goal margin. Looking at some results, you realise there are really only 10-12 competitive teams in womens CL. The worst teams in the groups are quite lower level. The final 16 in women's CL is not entirely elite. Probably if you had more reps from the bigger leagues you'd get a higher competitive level, but they are trying to raise the quality in the smaller leagues. I guess it'll eventually come. But if they are going to do this new group stage system, I'd prefer 8 groups, get 32 teams in there, add an extra team from the bigger leagues, and then you are going to see more quality, the lesser leagues will have their chance at harder competition.
