CPL International Caps

Recommended Posts

From seeing a discussion on Reddit, I thought it'd be interesting to make a list of all the players who earned international caps while in the CPL. Seeing as how I've seen us many times discussing how it's provided players with opportunities they wouldn't have gotten)(such as playing internationally for a second smaller nation), I thought I'd compile a list. For simplicity, I kept it to senior caps only (no youth caps), and not any training camps, call-ups with no actual cap, and only players who got them while in the CPL (so Waterman/MacNaughton didn't make the list).

Is this list accurate? I went through wikipedia seeing the international plays who had caps listed. Let me know if I am missing anyone/did I include anyone I shouldn't have. I also added a column if they were also Canadian eligible

@rydermikegreat thread. Cheers. I imagine Balidisimo will be added soon for Philippines. I think he’s been called 3 times without playing (Covid, registration, and injury).

Could be a bit of a want there for them, was he injured the latest call? He was picked up during it.

Technically were there not a few Canadians at the 2020 Camp Poutine?

Edit: Didic and Borges did play at the 2020 Camp Poutine.

I just kept it simple and just used actual caps, since those were a lot easier to track than call-ups, especially for non-Canada countries. For me, this was the easiest way to have a consistent method for inclusion.

Ok. But Didic and Borges were indeed capped in January of 2020 while being CPL players.

Borges has 1 cap after subbing on v Barbados on January 10, 2020 in a 4-1 win.

Didic has 2 caps from playing in that Camp Poutine. He debuted in the 1st Barbados game and played v Iceland too

Ah, thanks. Somehow I was thinking Camp Poutine was just a camp, didn't realize they had some friendlies. I'll add them later when I get to a computer (just on my phone now)

İs it full international caps or u-20/23 level counts?

Full caps only. I had that written in the first post, since it'd get over complicated with youth caps (and those are harder to track for international countries)

New potential caps:

Jonathan Grant - Guyana

Bren Soumaoro - Liberia

Andre Rampersad - Trinidad And Tobago

Euguene Pele Martinez - Belize

Pacifique Niyongabire - Burundi

Question for you all: Should they play, should I include Soumaoro/Martinez/Niyongabire in the list since they haven't played their first CPL game yet? Should it be a only while you're playing list or a while you're under contract list?

Jonny Grant made his debut for Guyana in a 2-0 win over Bermuda today, he was the instigator for both goals: Welshman flicked his cross on to the goalscorer for the first, and then he assisted on the second

Rampersad also made his debut for Trinidad and Tobago yesterday against the Bahamas

Martinez started for Belize against arch-rivals Guatemala, they lost 2-1

Pacifique Niyongabire plays full game and score in 1-3 loss to Indonesia in a friendly.

I believe that is his 2nd cap and his first goal for country.

2nd cap in three day.  Pacifique Niyongabire played 2nd half of 2-2 friendly vs Indonsia

York United's Jonathan Grant played the full match for Guyana in their Gold Cup preliminary match v Grenada yesterday.

They advanced on PKs.

Vancouver FC's Marcus Simmons was an unused sub.

Ex. Forge Emery Welshman started for Guyana.

They face Guadeloupe on Tuesday for a shot to take on Canada at BMO Field in the Gold Cup proper
