Who are your 26? (Going to Qatar)

Recommended Posts

Pardon me if I am late to the party but I just heard on OneSoccer yesterday that the WC rosters will be made up of 26 players (up from 23)

Here is much of the 60 man Gold Cup provisional roster from almost the same time last year (June 18 2021) with some additions and deletions.  I tried to correct as much as I could, please notify of any errors and feel free to make additions.  In just a year, several names were added to the list ie Edwards, Ugbo, Ennin, Halbouni, Kone, Koleosho.

Have fun picking your 26!

Part of me thinks DeVos would still be useful if you have him a month or two to knock the rust of and get the legs back.

F

Larin, David, Cavallini, Ugbo, Hoilett

This would be spot on for me if we were going to Qatar tomorrow.  I believe all listed here are locks aside from Cornelius, Wotherspoon, Fraser & Millar and possibly St Clair.  I would expect 3 or 4 of these 5 players will be there as well.  One or two may be left off for a young player or a player playing well leading up to the World Cup.  If I had to guess, Fraser and Cornelius would be the two on the bubble.

Disagree with Cornelius, only because we don't have much additional CB options who have played under Herdman.
Fraser could miss out based on how well the young guys on MLS Squads are doing going into October (Priso, & Kone for example)

I think Millar is in, but will have the most competition to keep his spot from a lot more guys than the others based on the plethora of depth options we have at that position. Brym starting at a new Eredivise club, Corbeanu will he play at Wolves or end up in the championship? Akinola can heat up at the right time (although I think he can only play one position in our system) to name a few. And that's not mentioning the possibility of Jebbison, Koleosho, or who knows maybe a random appears.

Is that to say Cornelius is a lock because we don't have many CBs? I kind of agree with that. I find myself thinking we won't carry 3 left footed CBs, but Herdman has done so numerous times, so that's probably me looking/hoping/wishing for us to add depth elsewhere, like right footed CBs for instance. That's why I continuously beat the Waterman drum.

It would probably be a snub for Cornelius to be replaced by Waterman, and I would bet on Cornelius over Waterman, but to me it would be comforting to see Waterman there, whether or not we bring Cornelius. Going with just Vitoria and Henry feels like driving an old pick up around without insurance.

Listen, I agree.  Cornelius right now is safe for me but I think if there is a defender that shines in the next 4 to 5 months, it's him that's getting dropped.  Unless, they choose to reduce from midfielders/attackers and keep both Cornelius & the other defender.  We can't ignore the fact that Cornelius was an unused sub in March when we were in dire need of a healthy center back.  After a great season in Greece, he was still not included in this recent 25 man squad which at the time of the roster release included a friendly match as well.  Fraser is still my bubble midfielder.  Assuming Wotherspoon is healthy, I see Herdman bringing him in and then him retiring or faded out afterwards.

I agree with you 100% on your points Liam Millar as well.  On paper, he's easily in our top 26.  Unfortunately for him as an attacker he is likely behind 7 others and that doesn't include some young attackers close to breaking through.

Far too difficult to predict a roster this far in advance but the 26 I picked are based on a combination of current selections and from recent call ups from Herdman.  Come October, I highly doubt my 26 will be the same as I feel right now.

I find it hard to believe that he makes in over Edwards, nvm Fraser.
He hasn't featured for Canada ever...don't see him miraculously doing so now.

Problem for Edward is that there is a lot depth and a large abundance of players who can fulfill the role and attributes that he possesses.

I would agree with this assessment.  I would also add that I think Smith at CB is a possibility based on how he does at the U20 level this month and if he can start getting minutes at Nice at CB in the autumn, especially as we don’t have depth in that position and I think he’s right footed.

Yeah, Edwards, why not. But archer21's list lacks of FB.

It does and it doesn't. There's Johnston, Laryea, and Adekugbe with Miller potentially playing there as well.
Then the possibility of having (i chuckled before I wrote this...) Davies or Buchanan filling in there if need be.

I agree.....but if we are comparing the two players that I mentioned (Edwards & Guti), I'm taking Edwards 9x out of 10.
Versatility is key....and he's having a better season than him.

I just made mention of this in the U20 thread.
It could be a breakout for a player which could lead to a Theo Walcott like WC callup.

Thought about adding a FB but we have so many versatile players that we can play there. Adekugbe, Johnston, Laryea, Buchanan, Davies, even Kaye, Miller, Kennedy, etc.
