Match Thread: Voyageurs Cup - Preliminary Round - Vancouver Whitecaps v Valour - May 11, 2022

Game is at 7pm local time (10 pm ET) on One Soccer.

This is the first ever meeting between these 2 clubs.

The winner will face Cavalry or Edmonton.

Big news yesterday is that Sirois can not play as part of his loan deal.

This could be 6 or 7 the way valour is playing. Luckily it's the whitecaps so probably more like 4 or 5.

Valour started well but have just sucked themselves backwards and lost any midfield. They need to sort themselves out.

The idea that Valour ever had a chance in this tie was always silly. Vancouver has suffered a few upsets to CPL competition, but to good teams. Valour are the Whitecaps of CPL, only worse, and with ownership that doesn't spend close to the meagre salary cap.

Pena needs to be subbed out at half, or Dos Santos needs to figure out our back line.  Vancouver is making it look easy pulling us apart

Training game for the whitecaps unfortunately. Valour often couldn't handle the press and that their midfield was nullified. The three at the back sat deep and often couldn't do more than pass it square or back to the keeper who would just turn it over anyway. So much was just too slow and lacking movement for valour. That said there was the odd glimmer.

In general two poor teams that each turned the ball over or passed it to the opposition far too much for  tier 1 teams. It would be one thing if the players were under pressure when they passed to the opposition but they never were.

Caught Vanni's post game interview. Apparently Baldisimo wasn't injured. He'd just had something in his personal life happen recently, and it emotionally caught up to him during the game.

Guess who has to throw shade at the attendance numbers?  If its a high number, its dubious, incorrectly announced, there must have been a giveaway.  Then the obligitory strange angle shot of empty seats to prove horseshit claims as above.

I was a little dismayed at the crowd, but the quiet did lend itself (and credit whoever in the Southside who was able to get a very old school feel chant going) to hearing clear as day to the number 99 Valour keeper: "You're not Gretzky, you're a Karen."

Wouldn't phrase it like that personally but don't entirely disagree with you. The Whitecaps/86ers have been around for closing in on 50 years now so a lot of the excuses that could be peddled elsewhere are not applicable. Think it shows that the bedrock of the support that will be there no matter what is probably no bigger now than it was when things were at their lowest ebb just after the CSL folded in the early 90s.

That's a fair point, no match in Canada should be judged based on what attendance looks like during the anthem.

However, it didn't get much better during the game. The Whitecaps are really struggling attendance-wise this year and I hope it turns for the better. The current ownership/management don't need to be given another reason to be apathetic.
