Ozzie_the_parrot
Will be interested to see whether the OP will consistently post what happens both good and bad. There's no point having a thread like this if the latter can't be discussed objectively along with the former. There's been some negativity about the turnout at the season opener in other threads but this picture from twitter suggests it was actually one of York's better crowds: toontownman, ted, Ftduck and 1 other
youllneverwalkalone
It does seem like mostly weekends from here on in, except FCE oddly. I guess they assume nobody will show up anyway.
SadOnMondays
I was at the game and two casual measures of attendance that I use were both up - they're were lots of people in my row (not always the case) and the lineup for the concessions was huge. Isnt 1800 a pretty good crowd compared to the usual numbers they were getting last year?? I have to admit, with everything going on this game snuck up on me, it almost got lost, too busy arguing about Flores. gator, jonovision, RS and 1 other 2

Too many different factors impacting attendance across the board. Maybe some of those factors are still in play. I guess we'll have to see as the season goes on. johnyb

With the added vip seating across from the main grandstand and the supporters section on the end 4K is likely pretty accurate. narduch

Ozzie_the_parrot
Steeper drop from 12,000+ last season than they may have been expecting so I suspect they'll have a close look at whether the pay what you want angle is worth repeating again in future in marketing terms. Doubt it added more than 1000 to the gate so it probably all boils down to how many of them turn into repeat customers.

I took 3 young referees from our club to their first CPL game, one plans to go to next weeks game and bring his father and some friends. To me the crowd looked bigger then 5500. Unnamed Trialist
Comparing the club's first match ever, on a Saturday in August in the middle of summer, with Covid restrictions loosening for the first time in 16 months, with a match that is just this season's home opener played on a rather cold and rain-threatening day in mid April. johnyb, Bbeto, jonovision and 3 others 5

Seriously doubt CanPL will ever under report a crowd. Used to happen in Scotland a lot (allegedly anyway) as a way to avoid paying the UK equivalent of GST, but that's easier to do when fans pay cash at a turnstile rather than buy a ticket in advance online. Ozzie_the_parrot
^^^normally would just ignore this guy but that remark is absolutely pathetic. In reality, I am delighted when I see the stadium full in Halifax and have frequently posted about what CanPL might be able to do to try to emulate that success elsewhere. ted
shermanator
Anyways, attendance for the two watch parties in Calgary was around 90. That was with many people (myself included) staying away with COVID or COVID like symptoms. Maybe a small bump from the season opener in 2021, a significant bump over the season opener 2020 and about 10 fold increase over the first away game in 2019. Attendance at events like this is not immaterial as it's a measurement of how the supporters culture is growing in CPL cities. johnyb and Macksam

Notice how he is only obsessed with CPL attendance? We know he has a big bias for MLS. MLS has a lot of major attendance issues and I've never once seen him bring it up in that sub forum. ted and Bbeto 1

Actually, there is only one person on the board who reports attendance with intention, to the point of being tendentious almost always. Others say "good crowd", or "bad turnout", and express opinions related. Every fan of CPL on this board knows what crowds could be better, what venues are not up to par, what days are bad for a good walk-up, and what constitutes a good turnout worthy of praise. It is just that no one else is weaponising that information weekly. You beg the question, but like on your knees and pleading every time. Even when you just report it, without commenting, you are still on the floor grovelling for a reaction. You have the choice to stop being like one of those kids who throws rocks on his neighbour's roof, and when the guy comes out, you are distractedly playing with your action figure in the grass. red card, Bbeto, CDNFootballer and 1 other 2
Ozzie_the_parrot
Home opener last season when they also did a pay what you want promotion was 12000+, Dominic94. Was never likely to work as well the second time around but suspect they were hoping for a bit more than what they got because they were able to do 4000+ sometimes last season on weekends at normal ticket prices. jonovision
I don't know why anyone would expect a home opener (as opposed to an inaugural home match like Ottawa had last year, or the league openers in 2019) to offer much of an attendance bump over any other regular season match, especially as it's still basically winter in much of the country. Over 5000 seems an excellent crowd for a CPL match in April, no matter where it's held. johnyb
Atlantic
Last seasons home opener was also free if you didn’t want to pay. This year it was minimum of 5 dollars to enter. There was quite a group sitting on the hill which was disappointing to see. It’s 5 bucks and it’s for a humanitarian aid.
