Just in time for the club’s home opener on Saturday, August 14th, 1812 Football Club is pleased to debut its 2021 home and away kits, created in support of the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.

Featuring a red striped design for the home shirt and a gold striped design for the away shirt, the fund’s logo is proudly presented on the front, complete with imagery of the feather capped hat fondly remembered by supporters of the fund, Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip alike.

“We are grateful for the support of the 1812 Football Club,” said Sarah Midanik, President & CEO, the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund. “We hope the visibility that they are bringing to our organization will help even more Canadians learn about the true history of residential schools and how they can do something.”

Inspired by Chanie’s story and Gord’s call to build a better Canada, the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Current initiatives by the fund include Legacy Schools, Artist Ambassador, Youth Ambassador and Legacy Space programs, all built in collaboration with the families of the late Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack. Downie passed away in 2017 after a battle with cancer while Wenjack had passed from starvation and exposure at the age of 12 while trying to navigate his way home from Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School in 1966.

Current notable Legacy Spaces open for viewing in Ontario include constructs at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie and in the west wing main floor of Toronto’s historic Union Station.

The 1812 FC x DWF kits will be available to order online in the coming days. Interested supporters can subscribe to the sales alert here.

“Through awareness, education and connection, we can all answer Gord’s call to ‘Do Something’ to move reconciliation forward and build a better Canada.”
