Thanks for the heads-up. I see he's from Barcelona, coached Espanyol youth, originally was hired by Fury but had visa problems. Then was at High Park in Toronto.

It's odd they'd have a u15 coach with them, but it's good for his experience.

As far as I can tell, every coach on the male side of the program is with them. I have no idea what all their roles are though. I guess he is the video analyst, Kerr is the keeper coach, Caldwell coaches the defence, not sure about Biello, Biecentini and Olivieri (maybe strikers, midfielders amd wingers)?

I find that really encouraging.  As long as everything it tied together with an underlying approach, it seems encouraging that Herdman is deputizing so many specialists to get the most out of our guys.  When you see the AirPods to receive advice and the entourage he has compiled, it is pretty hard to dispute the fact that he is doing everything he can to help achieve success.

Given that one of the criticisms I read on here from his detractors relates to ego, it seems positive that he has shown humility in getting the assistance needed to be successful.

Simply put, if we think we're a top team then this is a match we should win - even without Davies or David.  Herdman failed test one at this stage last time, but he has done as expected since (win then lose v USA in Nations League, beat Haiti over two legs in WCQ) (ok, so maybe the win v USA in Nations League wasnt expected). He needs to find a way this time for us to be taken seriously.

Going to be a tough one. Costa Rica is much closer to having their best team for this than we do, so if we win, it will be a great sign for WCQ. Costa Rica haven't looked great but they have had enough experience & tactical acumen to pull out victories thus far. It's a team that knows how to win, ours still needs to prove we can win knock-out matches, something that hasn't happened in the Gold Cup since we smashed Guatemala 3-0 in the 2007 Q-F, and this is a much stronger opponent that that. Hopefully we take that step tonight.

Agreed.  Another "statement making" match here against a traditional bogeyman side.  I await Herdman's tactical set up, approach, and in-game adjustments for this one.  I hope we can grind out the win.

Is Costa Rica a 'bogeyman side' though? My impression is that we've typically played up to expectations against them (lots of draws).

In fact, in the 2000s, Canada has 2 wins, 5 draws, and 4 losses against Costa Rica, a team that has qualified for the World Cup 4 times during that period (Canada qualified 0 times, in case anyone had lost count).

In the Gold Cup they haven't been a bogeyman side for us - but we have never played them in a knockout match in this tourney. I believe the results have been:

2000 - 2-2 draw, Corrazin with a PK goal and a scissor-kick goal

2003 - 1-0 Canada win in the first round (although we were largely outplayed - I was at this match in Foxboro as were a number of others on this board)

2005 - 1-0 loss on a bogus PK call when the ball was smashed off Patrice Bernier's shoulder in the 18 yard box from about 2 feet away

2007 - 2-1 Canada win on two goals by De Guzman after falling behind 1-0 early in the second. This time I think the scoreline flattered Costa Rica

2009 - Another 2-2 draw, I think we were down 1-0, then De Jong & Bernier scored in rapid succession & the Ticos tied it up before the half, in a game where we had (I think) already won the group after a couple of Ali Gerba goals lead to 1-0 wins over Jamaica & El Salvador

That part of it bodes well, but not sure how much this particular history is really going to play a factor. Getting over the Q-F hump against a side that will be considered the favourites over us (on FIFA ranking and overall form/experience over the last 10-12 years) is the bigger factor IMO.

Good list, thanks.

Most recently we drew them 1-1 in the 2017 Gold Cup.

They needed to win that game to get out of the group, very disappointing.  Raining like crazy that day.

When we were chasing a goal late Floro subbed in Hainault😅

The amazing thing is that it almost worked when a ball off a set piece fell right on his foot but CR managed to block his shot

So it's the same ref we had during our 3-2 loss to Haiti during our previous Gold Cup quarter-final match.

On the positive end, I don’t remember any bad calls in that game.  Atiba was actually offside that time haha

Could have used the Arfield/Davies connection today.

I'm glad our top players aren't playing in the Gold Cup.  The guys there now are going to be the core of our lineup going into the Octogonal (I refuse to call it Ocho).  We are not always going to have the big names available, the other guys are going to have to step up to the plate, that's why I enjoyed the USA game.  They faced some real adversity for the first time in... two years?

The more time for the Crepeaus, Cavallinis, Buchanans, Corbeanus, Johnstons, the better.  Shame young Millar and Kennedy aren't there but that is the point, everybody can't always be there.

We really could use Arfield, he might be the most valuable player that we have (or had)  I'm really pleased with Crepeau, I think we are in good hands if something happens to Borjan.  Good to see Crepeau getting the minutes and making good decisions and being very solid.

I had been bragging them up for being the type of solid folks who could stand up to a test but the six yellow card game kinda shook my faith a little (I don't blame the ref for all of that).  I just hope they justify my faith against CR like they did against the US when faced with adversity.
