GC: Canada vs Costa Rica - Sunday, July 25th, 7pm Eastern / 4pm Pacific - Arlington TX

Good to see Crepeau get a well deserved clean sheet, he has not been at fault for any of the goals allowed IIRC and has been very steady.  He deserves it.  (Apparently he didn't have a shot on goal tonight)

Herdman's next speech will be, you have every excuse to lose to Mexico (injuries, suspension) but this will be a turning point in how you react to the adversity.

Definitely well deserved shutout. And he made a big save early in the second half on a ball that would've been in 90% of the time in the past.

Genuinely never in doubt for me from the first goal. I was shocked by the outstanding team press and clearly they were as well. I liked the exchange where Wheeler was commenting on Costa Rica maybe looking old but Terry said no, this result is all canada. We don't just have energy, but talent and intelligence and confidence. Fucking hell.

Confession time: when Eustaquio announced he had switched to us, I was lukewarm about the announcement, mostly because I have a predisposition against Canadians who once played for other countries (hello Vitoria).  I'm sure you could go back and find a post or two of me saying "Eustaquio who?  Gimme Sammy Piette all day."

Fuck was I wrong.

Legit man crush with Eustaquio after that 3 question post-game with Platt.

One of the stories tonight was that Costa Rica has a generation of great players who are showing their age. I was a bit surprised they were so non-consequential, thinking of Campbell, Borges or Ruiz when he came on. You underestimate this, but it is still interesting to see. You keep thinking a veteran will come up with a big play and put us on our back foot, but did not happen.

They had plenty of plays wkere a player got stuck on the ball and we were able to swarm and strip it, or foul. They overthought. Even when they had to put pressure on, they really were not able to. They were not crisp, did not pass well at all, and I'd even say in attack they did not have a single interesting player. A lot of this is on us, on our pressure and team effort, but it is still odd to see.

For Canada, it wasn't the smoothest or cleanest of wins. It was a bit rough, but the fact we could handle this is a solid sign.
