Canadians in UEFA competitions 2021/2022

Some early UEFA draws yesterday/today and Champion League Preliminary round starts next week.  Also, we have our Gold Cup and Octagon schedules to compare. Watching the Euros, so I thought I would start looking at Canadians in the coming Champions League, Europa League and the new Conference League. Living document as it were, add and correct at will. I will start with the basics - pre transfers of course 

 

Champions League  

 Group Stage - (Draw – Aug 26) (First Matchday – Sept 14)  

   - Alphonso Davies - Bayern  

   - Jonathan David - Lille 

   - Atiba Hutchison and Cyle Larin - Beskitas. 

 

Third Qualifying Round - 

    - Scott Arfield – Malmö (SWE) / HJK Helsinki (FIN) vs Rangers (SCO) (Aug 3)

 

Second Qualifying Round   

    - Milan Borjan -  Kairat Almaty (KAZ) vs Crvena zvezda (SRB) (21 July) 

Will face Alashkert (ARM) / Sheriff Tiraspol (MDA) if they advance. 

 

Europa League 

Third Qualifying Round 

   - David Wotherspoon – PSV Eindhoven (NED) / Galatasaray (TUR) vs St Johnstone (SCO) (Aug 5)

 

Conference League  

Third Qualifying Round   

    - Stephen Eustáquio - Paços de Ferreira (POR) vs Larne (NIR) / AGF Aarhus (DEN) (Aug 5)    

 

Second Qualifying Round 

   - Liam Millar - Basel 1893 (SUI) vs Partizani (ALB) (22 July)

Will face Újpest (HUN) / Vaduz (LIE) if they advance.

 

   - Michael Argyrides -  Larne (NIR) vs AGF Aarhus- (22 July) 

Will face Paços de Ferreira (POR) if they advance.

 

  - Georgi Atanasov - Arda Kardzhali (BUL) / Hapoel Beer-Sheva (ISR) (22 July)

Will face Ararat Yerevan (ARM) / Śląsk Wrocław (POL) if they advance.

This site is the Bible for Uefa competitions. It's showing them in the Group Stage.

I hope we get to see more of our guys sign with European clubs because the more guys who do that, the more Canadian players we could potentially have playing Champions League football in the future which does even more wonders for our men's program.

They are in the qualifiers in the access list.

But since Chelsea didn't need the CL winners place (they qualified via their  league position) a few teams were bumped up a level.  Besiktas were one.

If that makes sense?

Conference League  

Third Qualifying Round - (Draw - Jul 19) (First Matchday – Aug 5)      

    - Stephen Eustáquio - FC Paços de Ferreira 

 

First Qualifying Round  

    - Michael Argyrides - Bala Town (WAL) vs Larne (NIR) - (8 July) 

But also seeing this many Canadians trying to play Champions League football, the only one who probably has a shot at getting to the Champions League Final is Davies with Bayern Munich.

The  third qualifying round draws for UEFA competitions were yesterday, so I updated the following in the original post. Also includes some results.

Champions League  

Third Qualifying Round -

Argyrides has yet to play for Larne (been the backup keeper), but a possible interesting match up there if Eustaquio remains with Pacos.  Was always going to be tough draw for St Johnstone (Champions League drop downs), on paper does not look bad for some of the others. 

I have not included some players that I am unsure will be with senior squads like Jules-Anthony Vilsaint.  But again any additions/corrections would be great.

Update after the second round  of qualifying  - won't repeat group stage participants as nothing has changed. 

Champions League  

Third Qualifying Round -

Conference League  

Third Qualifying Round   

    - Stephen Eustáquio/ Michael Argyrides- Paços de Ferreira (POR) vs Larne (NIR) (Leg 1 Aug 5)    

    - Liam Millar -  Újpest (HUN) vs Basel 1893 (SUI) (Leg 1 Aug 5)

     

    - Georgi Atanasov - Arda Kardzhali (BUL) - eliminated in the second qualifying round.

Eustaquio could become my favourite player ever if he is still there and they dump out the fine gentlemen from North London. 

That said they are getting a little ahead of themselves, aren't they?  Still have to beat the NI team.

Europa League 

 

Playoff Round 

    - Scott Arfield – after loss to Malmö (SWE), Rangers (SCO) vs Alashkert (ARM)(Leg 1 - Aug 19)

    - Milan Borjan -  after loss to Sheriff Tiraspol (MDA), Crvena zvezda (SRB) vs CFR Cluj (ROU) (Leg 1 - Aug 17)

 

Conference League  

Playoff Round   

    - David Wotherspoon –  after loss to Galatasaray (TUR), LASK (AUT) vs St Johnstone (SCO) (Leg 1 - likely Aug 19)

    - Stephen Eustáquio/ -  after beating Larne (NIR), Paços de Ferreira (POR) vs Tottenham (ENG) (Leg - likely Aug 19)   

    - Liam Millar - after beating  Újpest (HUN), Basel (SUI) vs Hammarby (SWE) (Leg 1 - likely Aug 19)

Michael Argyrides - Larne (NIR) eliminated.

Short update after the five games with CMNT players tonight.

 

Arfield and Borjan in the groups stage of Europa League with aggregate wins for their respective teams. 

Liam MIllar the same in the Conference League. 

Wotherspoon and Eustaquio's teams eliminated from the Conference League. 

 

Draws tomorrow.

Was waiting for some fixtures. Groups and opening fixtures in the three competitions update as they are official. 

Champions League

- Cyle Larin, Atiba Hutchinson

Group C - Sporting Lisbon, Borussia Dortmund, Ajax, Besiktas

First game - Wednesday 15 September v.  Dortmund

 

- Alphonso Davies

Group E: Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Benfica, Dynamo Kyiv

First game -  Tuesday 14 September away to Barcelona

 

- Jonathan David

Group G: Lille, Sevilla, FC Salzburg, Wolfsburg

First game - Tuesday 14 September v. Wolfsburg

 

Leaving Club Brugge (Tajon Buchanan)  out until he is there.

 

Europa League

- Scott Arfield 

Group A: Lyon, Rangers, Sparta Prague, Brondby

First game - Thursday 16 September v Lyon  

 

- Milan Borjan 

Group F: Braga, Red Star Belgrade, Ludogorets, Midtjylland

First game - Thursday 16 September v. Braga

 

Europa Conference League

Group H: Basel, Qarabag, Kairat Almaty, Omonoia

First game - Thursday 16 September
