Signed to a homegrown contract by Vancouver Whitecaps.

Class of 2004.

Central defender. Highly-regarded and a player to watch.

That's great news.  Happy for the kid and the Whitecaps.  Like many, I'm hearing this kid is really good. The article also mentions Habibullah has signed.  Must have missed that one!

He will likely make the bench this weekend and could see time, his rise will be quick MDS is very very high on him and has compared him to Nesta the former Impact CB... but seriously that’s high praise. It won’t be long till he gets a start and pushes the current CB’s for time.

Edit: pretty sure that Cornelius is still out, and Adnan isn’t with the team. The bench will change a bit and it’s not like they’re swimming with CB depth.

From the release, it doesn’t sound like they have roster spots for the first team so I assume that means him and habbibulah cannot play

I’m confused with that too, but Shuster alluded to finding a path or something and MDS is over the moon with him, I doubt it will take long. They haven’t announced any loans yet either for Pecile and co.

to my understanding Habbibullah is their top 03, and Campanga their top 04 with Herdman being close behind. Given their intention to buy, develop and sell young players you’d think a path to playing time is in place.

theyre also chasing a 10 so something has to give.

That wording is strange, before these two signings Vancouver has 30 rostered players, however Khmiri and Colyn are on loan which should open up two roster spots for Campagna and Habibullah.

Matteo Campagna a nice Italian Canadian kid , being of Italian background myself my parents came from the boot , I’ve noted you don’t see a lot of Canadian kids of Italian heritage making it in pro soccer or even our national team compared to the size of the Italian Canadian community in Canada. However, if you look at how many Canadians of Italian background are playing in the NHL it’s pretty sizeable compared to soccer. In the end I don’t care what a players ethnic background is but it was just an observation on my part being of Italian heritage. Therefore, I don’t see any Canadian players of Italian heritage in the foreseeable future having to choose between Canada or Italy lol there are just not that many around anyways lol.

Maybe a shift now the pathways are much better for Canadians in Canada? Campagna if he is successful could be a huge piece in the turn of the tide.

I live in a pretty Italian town, I’m kinda surprised no one here made it pro (other than I think a not Italian former USLer). I did play with a current NHLer for a couple of years and also an OHLer for a few years, I think a lot of guys here played both sports since a lot could afford it.

When I was 18 I played with one guy who was incredibly good, he was apparently at some Italian academy when he was younger but had a heart problem or something. He was probably the best player I’ve ever played with or against and it’s a shame he never made it.

Once I got to men’s league there were some really talented young players, I think the lack of opportunity might have screwed some guys over. Though Italians here are incredible cocky, no offence haha. I think too many didn’t have the right mentality and act like they’re all Ronaldo lol.

Stalteri is 3rd on Canada's all time cap list.

I believe Peschisolido and Corrazin are also of Italian heritage.

But I agree with the overall premise.

Canada's Portuguese community is way smaller and produces way more decent professionals.

Yes very true.

Oops, that didn't seem to work. Matteo Campagna loaned to York for the rest of the 2021 season.

I am still curious why he attended so many CMNT camps. I know it was just to make up the numbers, but why him?

Back in Vancouver, Matteo and Jay were sleepover buddies. Word on the street is that they had many wild pajama parties at the Herdman residence over the years, pillow fights and all.

Cristian started to get a little jealous his baby bro got to spend so much time with (and get so much access to) Papa Herdman. But being the ultimate man-manager that he is, the big man keenly took notice and had something even better in store for Cristian than late night pillow fights....

No cap.

Okay, I will see myself out now. As you were, gents.
