COQ | Match Thread: Mexico U24 vs Canada U24 | March 28 @ 9:00pm Eastern 6:00pm Pacific

Recommended Posts

We'll this will be tough. Later in the day after WCQ vs the Caymans.

9:00pm Eastern / 6:00pm Pacific

In the previous two cycles we lost to Mexico by two goals.

3-1 in 2012:

and 2-0 in 2015:

Having lost TMG to injury, having shipped Sturing to the senior team and with Cornelius possibly injured now too we are very weak at CB. This could actually be much worse than previous cycles. That Mexico side is incredibly strong and at least 12 of those guys have senior Mexican caps:

I initially thought that you meant they would be DQ’d and I thought that would never happen.  But deducting 3 points to drop them to second isn’t entirely out of the question.  That would be amazing on two fronts.

1. It would give us an easier path.
2. It would screw over Honduras.

Forfeiting the 3 points they earned against DR shouldn't be the punishment. FIFA needs to be consistent here and apply the same punishment that Haiti received for not meeting the COVID protocols in time. Have them start the game against Canada with just 10 men, including an outfield player in goal, a fat Burrito chef as a false 9 and have nobody on the bench. After 25 minutes they can go up to 11 men, but then are required to go back down to 10 by the end of the match.

Failing that, tell Mexico they have to field the group of portly fans who lost 15-0 to Haiti in a pre-tournament friendly against us. That might also be fair punishment.

Actually a fine and no fans allowed in the stadium would be a minor gain. Still a huge uphill battle of course but removing the home field advantage would be good. Plus it is a punishment that suits the crime. Fans don’t get to watch the home team qualify for the Olympics live. I agree that it’s unlikely they dock 3pts.

Happy to be surprised though. Mexican fans are friendly enough one in one in my experience but as a group are pretty dismissive of things like bans on racist and homophobic chants. Won’t change unless there is a real consequence. An empty stadium is a consequence, but not as unusual or powerful a statement in COVID times as it was previously.

At most it will be a fine..we’re not going to be playing the US

The only reason I think a points deduction could happen is because it wouldn’t necessarily stop Mexico from qualifying.  It would send a strong signal for future cases that FIFA takes the issue seriously without having a catastrophic impact on the region’s superpower.  Given that this isn’t the first time they have sanctioned Mexico about this specific behaviour I could see it happening.

Without reading the article I'm assuming it's the Puto chant after goal kicks. I've seen a lot of Mexicans point out the word translates more to "bitch" or "asshole" when used in this context. I know a strange amount about Mexican swearing from my time on Xbox Live, there's another word that gets used instead for that slur. It CAN mean the F word depending on context, but there's a lot of black and white thinking these days so the Americans that usually are the ones getting offended about it aren't exactly using context.

To be fair, if supporters in English countries started saying "none offensive" things like Fuck You! after goal kicks, I can still see FIFA wanting people to stop since it probably gets them in trouble with sponsors haha.

Either way it's hilarious that FIFA is holding the 2022 world cup in a country where being gay is literally illegal and has a death penalty. Great job being hypocrites.
