I want to be supportive of the league and especially Pacific but my god the signing of these types of players is both uninspiring and horrible for the league. There's absolutely no resale value in a 24 year old coming from the 7th tier of England, a player like this doesn't raise the standard. The league is supposed to be about identifying Canadian talent that's been overlooked and providing them opportunities, a signing like this is so counter-productive. BC has soo much talent, just from the VMSL Premier alone you could field a competitive CPL team. The bigger issue I have here is that they're not even looking to find the players that have slipped through the cracks. It can't be that you have talented young players earning trials in Europe in strong leagues but can't get a look with the local side... The kid who signed with Braga is one example of this. deschamp86, NVsoccer, MM3/MM2/MM and 3 others

I really can’t stand this take. Pacific weren’t even able to sign their draft picks due to the league’s new international player requirements. The only roster spots they have left are designated for internationals because the team is already full of young players from BC. ted
wallflower
Footyeh and Aird25 - you just brought me out of hibernation (6 years). I was having this very discussion with someone today. This Irish "news" is terribly disappointing. Nothing personal. Just structural. I believe today's comments went something like, "Why would ANY Pacific FC supporter be interested in some 7th tier player from AnywhereWorld when there are so many excellent Canadian players to draw from? This league has already lost its way. Third year. Lost."
Bison44
Whats the sense of having designated INT spots if you sign guys like this? I thought the thinking was that you could bring in cheap good players and it would raise the level of play, let the CDN kids get experience from the handful of foreign nationals. Jeepers, I hope he doesnt turn out to be another Hoyle. He also scored a bunch in NZ and did sweet tweet for Valor. The influence of the "21st club" is pathetic, just really laughable all around. If the league is going to be of any success, it needs to be built on bringing in young players from smaller markets and giving them a platform to showcase themselves to higher levels. Would much rather them focus on CONCACAF countries than to go out and get guys from England's 7th tier, Germany's 4th tier, New Zealand etc. The best chance CPL has at making money from exporting is by identifying the best players at 16-17 in the country building them up as products that teams in Europe will want to take flyers on at 18 or 19 and are willing to pay a transfer fee or at least training comp. The Americans are doing it so well, look how many kids are garnering extensive minutes in the USL from the age of 15, this gives them credibility in the global market. The international spots should be approached the same by finding the best possible international talents at 18 or 19 years old. The leagues we want our players advancing to aren't going to pay any kind of fee for a kid older than 20-21 (Besides the CDN MLS sides). Can't help but think a kid like Antoine Coupland could have been the prime example, made his name at 15 with Ottawa Fury... going to turn 18 this year and his playing time hasn't really improved. Stryker911
I am probably in the minority, but I dont mind signings like this. I dont think the league loses anything by having some lower level Europeans in the league. Take Forge for example. They have Achinioti-Jönsson who they signed from the Swedish 3rd division. He has been really good player for them for 2 years now. I dont think there he necessarily took a spot directly away from a Canadian. Also, take a look at the MOACA list. We have players playing at low levels all over the world. Are they taking spots from a young player in that country? Maybe, but they are traveling the world playing a sport they love. It is what it is. Aird25, Bbeto, ted and 4 others
Bison44
Its not just that he is from a low level, if they can go ahead and find a gem for pennies on the dollar, that would be great for the league. Maybe they know something we dont, but Hoyle was well hyped from NZ league and was terrible. We are worried he is going to be in that vein, and there is only spots for a few foreign nationals. Why waste it, when you have the whole world to pick from??
youllneverwalkalone
I don't see any substantial difference between this signing and Jordan Brown or Nathan Mavilla. Both worked out ok. There are many examples of lower league English players reaching much higher levels than the CPL. I don't get the outrage. We don't even have a schedule or any guarantee of one. Who are you expecting to sign, Jamie Vardy? Zem, Stanley, toontownman and 2 others
Stryker911
I am sure the fans of Bohemians in Ireland weren't a huge fan of them signing a Canadian U20 player who a season or 2 before was playing in the English 6th tier. Thinking that there was some Irish guy that they could have signed. But that guy ended up being one of their top players and is one of the only players they have sold for a fee in their history. Aird25
Isn't it only a tier below where Petrasso ended up as well? He's a pretty solid CPL player. Here's a more detailed breakdown than I've seen for almost any of our players. I have no clue if this will work out, but I really don't get some of the reactions. Speaking the language can't hurt either https://eikonsports.com/getting-to-know-ollie-bassett-an-analysis-of-his-career-so-far/
SpursFlu
Maybe it's not so much his level of play but his style of play that they think as helpful and a positive influence on the Canadian player

Aird25
I predict we start the season strongly due to our continuity and extended preseason, though I wish we had a few scrimmages under out belts. Aird25
Great start, yesterday. We moved the ball around very nicely at times. I’ve pieced together why Baldisimo and Blasco were missing but does anyone know why dos Santos and Haynes weren’t in the lineup?

davey_twelve
Three games in and the team seems to be at a similar level to previous years. Lots of rotation already and most players seem to be on the same page with how Kah wants to play. Still need to be sharper when defending. ted
Aird25
Even when we play fairly well, we still struggle to manage games. I chalked it up to immaturity in year 1, but we still give up incredibly soft goals
