Unnamed Trialist
New post for the 2022 season. Thanks for help and any corrections. This is for confirmed loans out of CPL to other clubs for the 2022 season. youllneverwalkalone
I'm not certain, but I suspect your annual salary is paid over the length of the season. I assume the loan deal has additional terms for the player and terms for the club around transfer fees. That said, I suspect the CPL clubs were all taking advantage of CEWS -which would give them an incentive to spread the salary out over 12 month. You probably shouldn't change your normal business practice to get a better result but who knows.

Which in any case is beneficial financially to both the lending club and the player. Given we will likely have shortened seasons for the next season or two in comparison to most leagues this could be a fantastic pulling factor for players. Especially for selling the league as a stepping stone. They essentially get two markets to show themselves off in and a chance to mitigate the low wages CPL offers. I would be interested to see how they work too. johnyb and An Observer

That's not technically a loan, his contract with York just doesn't come into effect until next year so he's playing with FC Phönix Lübeck until then. https://canpl.ca/article/york9-fc-signs-promising-german-striker-julian-ulbricht

Alright, edit: Transfermarkt does say it's a loan, not playing out one contract before walking into the present one. https://www.transfermarkt.es/julian-ulbricht/profil/spieler/349404 Edited October 10, 2020 by Unnamed Trialist
Unnamed Trialist
Putting my query about loans here, not in the first post. -------------------------- I wanted to ask a question on the topic: does sending players on loan mean that part of their salaries is being covered by the borrowing club? Curious about this as certainly many leagues our guys are going to have minimum salaries above the CPL minimums. That would mean they would have to not only cover part or all of the salary, but also top it up. Which in any case is beneficial financially to both the lending club and the player. Another oddity is how a player like Gazdov can go on loan for 2 years when he probably did not even have a 2 year contract at Pacific. Or am I wrong? yothat2 and The Real Marc

grande
Edit: Ignore this post, it's almost all wrong! A couple more loans according to Transfermarkt, all until the end of November: Robert Boskovic (Cavalry -> TFC2) Julian Dunn-Johynson (Valour -> TFC) Dante Campbell (Valour -> TFC2) Transfermarkt also says Viti Martinez was a trade, rather than a transfer? These aren't loans. All those players' contracts are owned by TFC. NVsoccer, grande, SadOnMondays and 1 other

The Real Marc
Maybe Trialist can explain, but why would Alaves sign an old journeyman to play on their B team? Honest question.

Honest question. Viti isn't a journeyman, and not old, he's 23. I have seen him play here in fact, as he was at Gimnàstic Tarragona for a while there. The real deal is that the stint with Nàstic went badly, I think he had conflicts with the coaching staff or head office, but he was not the only one as the team was wallowing. He was suspended from last January, didn't play, and was not even getting paid. So someone at At Ottawa picked him up as they saw he was in limbo, and he must have accepted since where else are you going to sign in April in the middle of a pandemic? He's trying to kickstart his career. At Ottawa is a way. But I would imagine if he can find his way back into at least a 2nd tier club in Spain, he'll say goodbye to the CPL. At Alavés B he's in 3rd tier, but if the first team is in a pinch he could swing a call-up, which would be amazing. I would imagine, to be honest, that At Ottawa understands this, he's not someone they'll insist on keeping if he can refocus his Spain career. The Real Marc
Do Spanish clubs teams regularly stock their B teams with players that may not have much of a future with the first team?

Good question. First, most B teams are the academy players after getting out of the Juvenil A league, which is three years of U-19. And then others who are still eligible for u-19. They do pick up players a bit older for three basic reasons. One because they think the player might have an upside at 20-23 or so, and playing 2B in Spain means you can pay fairly low and take a look. So could happen, case of Viti. Barça picked up striker Rey Manaj, an Albanian who was Ballou's teammate at Albacete, guy was 23. I really do not think he has much of a shot at the first team. As for Viti, more of the same, La Liga woudl be a big leap. Then you pick up more experienced players for reasons of what division you are playing your B team in. Most clubs feel that if your B is in 2nd division, it is very hard to stay up. Right now there are no B teams in 2nd. Remember when Tabla went to Barça they were in 2nd, amazing experience, but they relegated. But if you feel it is worth it, you sign some more experienced guys just to keep the team on the level, so the younger guys get the experience: your older signings are there to bolster the younger guys' experience. I think it is not worth it. Also it is costly, 2nd division A has a minimum wage like 4-5 times 2B. 2B is fine, players can move from 2B to a first team adequately. You have to get them to train a bit with the first team, let the coaches see them, they can get onto a call-up and even play. 3rd division, fourth tier, is too low, with exceptions. They've restructured 2B this year, it is a weird setup so being all different, it is hard to read the motivations of the clubs signing for their B teams. I sort of expect that Viti at Alavés is filler for the B team, but really do not know. Edited October 22, 2020 by Unnamed Trialist
