CPL Playing During the Coronavirus/Covid19 Pandemic

Recommended Posts

Reading between the lines my guess would be that the announcement was mainly about the players accepting that the 25% deferral had turned into an outright "trim" as the basis for being able to proceed with a 2020 season. Looks to me like the league is ticking over on federal government salary subsidy for now until mid-August and that's when the island plan might happen through to the end of September, if they still can't play home games in Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta. Will be interesting to see what David Clanachan has to say on Onesoccer tomorrow.

More movement on allowing fans in attendance for sports as Florida and Alabama join Texas in allowing it :

NASCAR announces plan to allow limited number of fans at 2 upcoming events

"Officials for the Dixie Vodka 400 race will invite up to 1,000 South Florida service members as honorary guests, while Talladega Superspeedway will allow up to 5,000 guests in the frontstretch grandstands and towers for the GEICO 500, NASCAR said"

So no U-Sports in 2020. Could have some impact on extra players joining CPL clubs.

Agreed - especially if the courses are now on zoom calls. I wonder how that would work - for this year only students would be able to play the entire year in the CPL and still retain their amateur status? Or is there something else?

not bad but in a 7 game regular season why not let all the teams in the playoffs..quarter finals 1vs8 2-7 3-6 4-5..if you doing such a short season let everyone have a chance

So that the regular season means something and there is a sense of accomplishment for the teams that make it. There will be some legitimate stakes in the regular season. Especially since there won’t be any home field advantage for the higher seeded teams, so finishing top half wouldn’t really be rewarded if everyone got in.

P.S. Sure it seems like a short season, but it is longer than the group stage of the Champions League and the World Cup, Euro Cup, Gold Cup, etc. In those competitions half the teams are dropped after the group stage as well.

in general yes but a 7 game regular season doesnt mean much and some teams would miss playoffs by a point or even goal difference..and let fans have the pleasure to see their team for an extra game..its already very short

And its not like its 25+ teams like MLS, its 8 clubs and with 7 games they will just barely be coming together and its over.  Let everyone have a chance in this crazy Covid shortened season.  Its only 1 more game per team.

If it's up to the provincial government in BC I'm sure there wouldn't be so many hoops to jump thru. The problem is if the federal government gets involved it all becomes ridiculous. Speaking from experience as someone living in BC thru these times

In what way would the federal government get involved? Almost all public health measures have been implemented by provincial governments.

Good question. I know BC provincial government had to submit their NHL proposal to the federal government for approval.

Approval? Maybe for the federally regulated aspects like international travel but anything else would be guidance.

The PTs have commended the Federal governments efforts on collaboration and support thus far.

Yah.  So for instance what if the provincial government of BC said they did not require a 14 day quarantine for CPL teams if the players and staff had already been in Canada for at least 14 days. If that was the plan could they do it?

Guess the stadium still matters from a camera angle standpoint even with no spectators and Moncton must be all sorted for that if it was OK for a Women's World Cup. Beyond that the most obvious reason for an ongoing delay is the finances involved.

It's probably still better for them to wait as long as they can to see if there is any prospect of playing in home stadiums in front of spectators given the season ticket refund angle before pulling the trigger on the single location tournament format.
