I really hope Petrasso, Mannella and Manny can play next game. I even would like to see Fugo play a bit for Abzi.

I want to see Telfer at RW and Petrasso at LW.

Porter does nothing for me up top. I think he would probably be best at RB and Doner was poor so maybe he could start a game there.

Yes, another inverted winger fan, nice haha. You know I agree 100% about Telfer and Petrasso at RW and LW respectively. I think Vasconcelos would also find it a more natural fit at LW than RW for sure. I think Telfer was at RW and Vasconcelos at LW for about 15 minutes in the opener, I did see them switch flanks time to time. I think, if Rivero and Vasconcelos were allowed to play longer, while we had the man up, then they would have found more joy for sure.

Rivero impressed me with his workrate, he was playing ST on offense, but coming all the way back to CAM on defense, and he also created a nice chance in the first 15 minutes. Vasconcelos obviously disappointed for most of us probably. And yep, Porter is a defensive specialist to me by now, I would definitely rather see Murofushi start in one of the CM spots, he was our most consistent player in the 2nd half. Of course, if Mannella and Manny are fit, then who knows what happens. Arnone would probably not be starting at CDM if the two were fit though.

I dont care what the reason they signed him is. It is good for York, good for the league, and good for Canada having players move on.

They might have used their one month free trial.

I didn't watch many York9 matches last season, but when I did, Estevez was never a standout. I find this surprising.

Di Chiara was the best player by far last game. Arnone filled in ok at DM.

Maybe murofushi, Manny and jdc start in the midfield tonight.

Last night was disappointing to say the least.  Concentration MUST to be better.  I always think there are key points* to a match were everyone needs laser focus Y9 has failed in both games at those points and have paid the price.  Ingham hasn't been convincing when he's come for balls on corners.  The goal and Pacific's best chance before then both came off of corners that Ingham should've done better on.

Going off last nights comments by @SoccMan & @Ams1984 in the match thread re: Jimmy I wouldn't be so quick to pull the trigger, even after this "season".  It would be very rash for any team to make those decisions after a tournament like this.  Especially with the loss of Hamilton, Ugarriza, Jaco and Lopez. Manella has miss the first two games and Petrasso missed the first 25% of the round. It would be harsh to make any long term decisions based on The Island Games.

As frustrating as it is at times the CPL is about developing coaches as much as it is players.  Jimmy's got the credentials and his subs have had an impact in both games thus far.

*Stouffvillain's key points - Opening/closing 5 minutes of each half, 5 minutes after a goal, corners & free kicks.

Ingham makes some really nice saves but god damn he makes a lot of errors too, out backup is a 17 year old kid too.

Saturday is a must win vs Valour coming off two days of rest. Petrasso and Rivera need to start, I really hope they didnt give up on Vasconselos after one game so I am hoping he plays on saturday.

Porter has no business starting on the wing at this point. Arnone should get a look at CB as thompson and Gasparratto havent looked great. Manny was pretty bad but I will give him a pass its his first game in almost a year.

Maybe give Porter a game at RB as Doner has been shakey, what was he doing blocking ingham on that corner. I figure they need to win 3 games to advance. So beat HFX, Valour and FCED which is doable, any points vs Forge or Cav would be a bonus.

Mr. Baldasarra has used his contacts to get some league sponsorship for this tournament.  I've noticed quite a few builders/developer sponsorship that wasn't there last year.

Trinistar/Starlane, Premier Ceramics, History Hill/Treasure Hill

It looks like they have added local sponsors for each game. It changes depending on who plays.

Yes, that makes sense as you would see local sponsors at each stadium.  I don't recall seeing those sponsorships at York Lions Stadium last year.  Just pointing out that those are new and they aren't little mom and pop shops that are buying in.

I thought last year CPL didn't want non National sponsors?

Apparently York wasn't allowed to put Greenpark on their jerseys

Maybe they've changed their stance on that because of all the loses this year they are opening it up to regional sponsorship.  Greenpark was advertised in both York 9 games this season as well.

It makes sense. Even TFC has a few board sponsors that are basically local.

I saw that City of Langford was a sponsor for both Pacific games.

And Big Rock beer for the Alberta teams.

Quick thoughts on game #2

Positives first. Rivero great touch, great composure on the goal, but also really smart decision-making and calmness with the ball up top. Thought he had an average or fine game for the opener as well, and it makes sense to have him start and let Wright be the energetic backup. Murofushi a magnet with the ball again, JDC has really re-made himself as an energetic box to box 8 instead of the deep-lying 6 that he played most last season that he wasn't very good at. Ferrari showed he can push for a starting spot, definitely fits right into the squad.

Negatives. Manny was misplacing too many passes or losing the ball too easily, as he's done often last season as well. Great ball in the first 10 minutes though. We would still rather see Jimmy ask Telfer and Petrasso to switch flanks, at least during mid-game, because they are too predictable playing as classic wingers at LW and RW respectively. Our defense as a collective is not playing to the high standard we set for the team last season, which is a bit of a downer, cuz it's the same 5 starters at the moment. For our offense to shine, we need some unpredictability, and to me, that's going to come from having Telfer and Petrasso cutting in as inverted wingers, as Blasco and Bustos did to us all game long, and Fisk in the opener.

Also wanted to quickly point out that we played a 4-4-2 diamond, with Manny at CAM, Porter at LCM, JDC at RCM, and Murofushi at CDM yesterday for most game. When Petrasso came on for Porter, the formation shifted to the classic 4-3-3 we usually play.

We generally defended in the opener in a 4-4-2 diamond as well, with Rivero as the CAM.

Can't really disagree with you on anything here.  There was more fluidity up top last year than there has this year and without a trequartista to pull the strings our attack has been predictable.  If Telfer and Petrasso swapped wings on the fly during games it would help, crosses would still come in from Abzi and Doner.

We have been missing the composure on the ball in midfield and which is why we haven't had long stretches of possession in the opposition's final third (with the exception of when Ottawa was down a man).

Undefeated thus far, sure but things don't look good.  A full six points from the Edmonton & HFX matches are a must and we probably need to pick up a draw in one of the Cavalry/Forge matches.

Defensively we've been better the last two games but offensively there is just no creativity.  Getting the ball 18-10 yards from goal with your back to the goal and turning it into back passes to your CB's or GK is not good.  There doesn't seem to be any urgency when we are on the ball, causing turnovers in the offensive half but then waiting until the defense gets re-organized defeats the purpose of the press.  Possession is great but you have to use it to keep the defense working and creating holes in their coverage, the play has been lethargic at times.

If the best chances on goal that you can get are 20+ yard shots the opposing keeper will take that all day.  Something needs to change which isn't the easiest thing to do when Forge is up next but I'd like to see what Altobelli has and Halley looked full of pace and confidence when he was on the field.  It isn't fair to put that expectation on the kids of the squad but the vets that have been out there through three games haven't warranted keeping the kids on the bench.

Looking ahead to the FCE match tomorrow night and it looks like the perfect trap game.  Paulus' comments after the Valour loss could fire up an inspiring performance from the Eddies and there has been nothing about Y9 this season that tells me that they are capable of imposing their will on a deflated opponent.

Easton Ongaro is the kind of striker that Y9 should go after in the offseason.  It's nice to have guys like Rivero who are technical players but if all you try to do in attack is throw in high crosses a skilled 5'7" striker isn't really what you need.

Keeping possession is great but if all you're doing is working the ball around to the top of the box and then back to your CB's and back around the park you aren't scaring anyone.  There isn't a midfielder who we've seen play this season that can pass through the heart of the defense.  I'm hoping that Altobelli is that type of player but at 17 years old I'm not putting all the hopes on his shoulders.

If I'm the coach going against us I'm telling my team "don't foul in a dangerous area, they can't score without a dead ball".  That isn't a speech you give when you are going against a contender.

I think Ongaro will be moving onto bigger and better things so I cant see York getting him but Campbell might be more realistic with Diaz doing well at Pacific.

I just hope we can get Ugarizza who is starting in Peru right now back for next year.

Only if the York team and staff aren't good enough to plan around it. I agree it is potentially bad timing. The Paulus comments could fire up the team, or just as equally weaken and demoralize them further so they are there for the walk over. Nothing to say you couldn't have said the same about playing Edmonton on the weekend, that was a trap too. Edmonton had to win so you would expect them to come out all guns blazing.

Either way if York wants to win this competition they have to be better than the worst team in the league and upping their game when they need it most. If they can't get through this game with a win, it is likely not going to be anyones fault but their own.

Agreed on Ongaro.  I was more talking of a striker in his skill set rather than a Rivero who's talents are being wasted with the style of play we've seen this season.

I went on a bit of a rant on that whole "upping their game" part in the HFX match thread.  I won't re-hash it here except to say that they've had more than enough chances to show they were capable of that this season and failed to do so.
