2019 Voyageurs WNT Player of the Year

Recommended Posts

We can't very well only have a Men's player of the year, so I thought I'd start the Women's poll

The deadline for submissions is 12:01 AM (Pacific) January 1st, New Years Day 2020. Submissions for PoY must have a first place, second place, and third place selection. A point system is used to calculate a players points total at the completion of polling. A player will receive 5 points for a 1st place selection, 3 points for a 2nd place selection, and 1 point for a 3rd place selection.

The player with the highest final aggregate total will be declared the Voyageurs International Player of the Year. Only one submission per IP address. Additional submissions from the same IP address allowed entirely at the Administrators discretion.

For a player to be eligible for the Voyageurs International Player of the Year the player must have been selected for international duty at the senior level in 2019 and be eligible to play for Canada, in accordance with FIFA laws & statutes

I'm not sure if anyone really stood out this year, so it's making it hard for me to decide.  I'll go with success as the differentiator.

1 Steph Labbe (NWSL champion, usually the starting goalkeeper)

2 Kadeisha Buchanan (UEFA champion, not always playing)

3 Jessie Fleming (NCAA semifinals)

Sinclair would normally have got a vote from me, but she made slow headway this year in her quest to surpass the all-time international goals record, so I'm not including her in my top three.

P.S.  I hope we aren't supposed to vote just based on performance on Team Canada.

I'm not sure if 8 votes is enough of a sample size to be representative of the Voyageurs, but at 35 points, Ashley Lawrence is the clear winner.  Sinclair and Labbé tied for second/third with 9 points each.

I'm surprised more posters didn't weigh in on this poll.  Perhaps the performance in the WWC has dampened the response here?

Activity here has been going down for a while even before that.  I'm not sure why, but it looks like people just don't care as much about women's soccer anymore.  For example, interest in the NWSL seems to have dropped off a cliff around here.  To be fair, interest in the MLS seems to also have waned judging by the drop in posts in that forum, too.  Maybe there's some general influence at work here?

Certainly there are a lot of factors contributing here, for sure.

Well, for me, I don't see the National Team play much even though I am a fan.  There are no easy to get streaming options and I don't have cable anymore.  I watch a lot of FAWSL on the FA Player so mostly Beckie and Leon.  Since the NWSL screwed around with their online viewing so much I can't watch games and after the Women's World Cup and the disgusting conduct of the USA women I really don't give much of a crap about the NWSL anymore.  The best Canadians are going to Europe, anyway.
