General MLS Talk 2020

CBS was reporting last week that the tentative schedule sent to the teams, started on July 9, with the final between August 6 and August 9.

The number of new daily cases in Florida has surged in the last couple of weeks, going from about 500 a day to over 1,000 a day. Which is far more than the entire country of Canada is now getting a day.

Perhaps we'd be better off if the Canadian MLS teams joined the CPL teams somewhere that's Covid-free for an epic Voyageurs Cup.

Does anyone know if TSN will show all the games or just the Canadian teams?

Article on the Athletic discussing the tournament mentioned that MLS's "world wide partners such as TSN" would be carrying the tournament.  How many games they carry, I don't know.

MLS playing in Orlando is a risky move. Florida reported this week their highest daily cases. Florida recorded more than 1,000 new cases on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (the state’s highest daily total yet). That record only stood for a day: It was eclipsed on Friday, when the state reported another 1,902.

Florida is also playing fast & loose with their numbers. They fired their web dashboard person for not manipulating figures for the website. They also stopped reporting hospitalization and never have reported cases in nursing homes.

Republicans getting flak for moving their convention in late August to Jacksonville. No fans for MLS but I'm waiting to see if MLS shows up on the media's radar.

Has any explanation been given by MLS why Orlando of all places was picked as the hub city for MLS games in July? Outside of the issue of the growing number of Covid 19 cases in Florida (which perhaps they wouldn't have guessed would happen) I just read that some games are being held at 9am in order to avoid playing during the intense heat of the afternoon, which they surely must have known would be an issue. Seems like the worst possible choice they could have made.

Disney World has a unique combination of thousands of hotel rooms, multiple soccer fields, and the ability to easily host large events at the drop of a hat. It’s also mostly self-sustained and isolated, so keeping players in a “bubble” is theoretically easier there than anywhere else.

Combine that with the fact that ESPN is a U.S. national broadcaster hurting for any kind of new live content, and it was almost always going to be held there (the same argument goes for the NBA).

Of course, we’d all feel better if Disney World was located just about anywhere else, but in terms of pure logistics it’s a no-brainer.

6 Dallas players test positive since arriving in Orlando.  OOPS.  Out of the frying pan (texas) into the fire (florida).  I hope we'll still see some sort of games this year.

There was about a 125% chance of something like this happening in Orlando or Texas.

https://www.tsn.ca/toronto-fc-head-coach-greg-vanney-would-like-team-to-delay-florida-arrival-for-mls-tournament-1.1491468

From the article:

While the Canadian MLS teams head south to the COVID hot spot of Florida, NHL teams reportedly will be coming the other way to play.

Canada, Vanney said, seems to have "a lot better control of the situation."

"To be able to go into that environment as a team would be a lot more comfortable than going down to what has essentially become the epicentre of the virus," he said. "So for sure, that (coming to Canada) is a smart move."

Five Nashville players have reportedly tested positive after entering the Orlando bubble.

The article seems to say that they tested positive upon arriving at the bubble.  I didn't get the impression that they caught the virus while in the bubble.  The bubble itself might be working well, but getting there healthy seems to be a big problem.
