Beirne resigning as President

It makes sense, although seemingly a year or two too early. He’s seemed to enjoy taking on new challenges so I doubt this is any different.

When Clannachan was announced as Commissioner I wondered what role Bierne would play, I don’t know of another league with a President and Commissioner.

edit: just read the CPL release, interesting line about a “Club opportunity.” I’m guessing that means within the league, why else would they mention it and capitalize the “C?”

Also "future projects in Canadian soccer".  Seems reasonable to think that the two might be related.

Also also I'd be shocked if he didn't have some mammoth non-compete clause in his contract somewhere.  His non-CPL options within this continent might be fairly limited until that expires.

He was part of the Front Office while the team was terrible and was continually raising ticket prices and gouging fans.

He was seen as part of the Anselmi regime.

Seems a little tough to partially blame him for the on field product. I didn’t follow the situation closely at the time but I thought his role with TFC was more about brand development and fan engagement?

Best of luck to him. Having both a president and a commissioner looked like overkill for a seven team league long term, so not surprising that there would be a departure once everything started to bed in. Given the way the CanPL press release is phrased and the "watch it grow" bit I suspect MLS may have had the good sense to hire him to sort out the Whitecaps.
