Just put the game on but he looks so small out there. I wonder if size/strength has been keeping him off the pitch, because from the little I've seen of him and by the sounds of this game, he has the talent.

Just watching pre game (forgot I was recording this) and they had a decent discussion about him.  Interesting to hear JdG echo some of the concerns regularly expressed here about how TFC does (or does not) do an adequate job developing these guys.

Wow, what a load off, so we're finally allowed to say it without the fanboys jumping out in defense of TFC's system and decisions?

It is very possible that in a couple of years he will have earned his stripes at TFC, been gradually brought into the starting lineup, and will be a regular. But the reality is that they demonstrably prefer older veteran players.  That has been their ethos for a long time and the recent Italian shopping spree reinforces that the philosophy hasn’t changed.

Even if he ends up being a first teamer, I will always have a suspicion that he could have accelerated his development elsewhere.   I would rather see him playing week in and week out in a different environment than fighting for scraps in squad filled with veteran players.  Even if he is learning from guys like Bern and Insigne in practice, I would rather see him progressing on the field at whatever level he could compete at right now.  Hell, like a ton of other guys, it is probably the case that he could succeed in a starting role if he moved to a different MLS club.

Definitely an improved performance. Would like to see him be more confident going forward, he plays too conservative at times. But there are certainly flashes when he decides to get involved -- he should make a point off doing so more often.

Defensively he had an up and down match. I think he was quite strong in his duels, even many of the ones he lost he actually basically won but he ball bounced funny and went back to the attacker. Late in the first half he was really slow to close down Kikanovic who shot over the bar. This play cannot happen at this level, it was remarkably poor awareness. His entire team gave it to him a bit after that.

Overall a very encouraging performance.

I think part of this has to do with the fact that Bern was in front of him.  He isn’t really the type of guy to sit back and wait for an overlapping run - he is a really direct player and runs at defenders almost immediately when he gets possession.  Hell, he lost the ball about 5 or 6 times last night trying to beat his guy one on one.

In that sort of set up, it isn’t really surprising that JMR tends to stay back a bit - though I did notice him pretty high up on the right side when they took defensive possession.  He seemed to be available as an high outlet as they tried to work it out of the back.

Oh there were quite a few guys slow to close people down, and it was because they were just slow or gassed in the second half.  You have a chance to coach this shortcoming out of JMR.  Ie, who was that Coello, he looked like he was playing in the beer league most of the second half, jogging around trying to look busy.  I know they were short handed, but geesh!!!

He's very good on the ball, TFC needs to find a way to keep him in the lineup after that performance.

He's clearly being prepared to step into Richie Laryea's role after his loan deal expires. Richie Laryea returned last year because right back was viewed as a weak point that needed to be fixed to make a playoff run possible. They ignored what was happening in net, however, which turned into the team's Achilles heel.

As El Diego points out above it wasn't all positive about how JMR performed yesterday but from the highlights he's definitely much closer to being ready for prime time than he was last season. In this and several other threads on here many of the posts castigating TFC over why he and other young Canadian players aren't playing regularly are the intellectual equivalent of an annoying little kid continually asking "are we there yet?" on a long car journey.

^^^ Hmm kind of like the idiots complaining that CPL doesnt have any players (oops current CPL players, excuse me while I change the goalposts) on the CMNT.  Or constantly repeating the CPL is a pointless vanity project that hasnt started all new academies and a womens league like some sort of learning disabled parrot.

After making the MLS TotW and being named MotM by some pundits, it will be really interesting to see what happens to JMR tonight now that the international window is over.  On the one hand you could understand if Laryea immediately steps back into the starting spot.   On the other hand, it would be pretty discouraging for a young player to have that kind of performance and then immediately get relegated back to the bench.  With the way Bradley deals with youth players, I suspect Laryea comes back into the starting 11 and JMR drops out, but I would love to see Richie get moved to the left side and have Marshall-Rutty retain his spot.

I wonder of Petretta is still hurt they could play Laryea on the left and still start JMR

BB has to find a way to start him and I'm sure he will.  Can't ask anymore from a player that has minimal mins, starts and gets TOTW. It would be devastating to JMR & reflect poorly on BB /TFC mgt.  Performance must be rewarded, if not its going to impact morale.
