I thought the product was good overall. The TV broadcast on Saturday was no worse than the MLS broadcasts I've seen this year, other than few too many misidentified players, which is somewhat understandable in a new league. In some ways it was better (not lingering too long on replays and missing live action).

I watched the Sunday game on my phone while cleaning the kitchen and also found it quite good. I did experience some buffering issues, though I'm not sure if that was down to a poor internet connection.

Am I the only one not that impressed by the highlight packages?

They have no commentary and are edited very weird. I’d be much happier if they edited down the actually broadcast.

I agree, the highlights they posted on Twitter were kind of strange, but they've just posted new highlight packages for the matches on the CPL YouTube channel which are very good; or at least more what I was expecting.

Thought the production for the Pacific match was not as polished as for the Forge match. More action missed due to replays, the pitch side interviewer was poor, and the transitions from the studio to the stadium were not as smooth. The main camera angle has already been talked about a lot and I couldn't agree more. That is really unfortunate and hopefully will be addressed eventually.

Will be interesting to see what play by play combos we get in each of the markets. We know that Sandor will be back in Edmonton. Dan Riccio will be involved in some Cavalry and Edmonton games.

I thought Schaad and Rustad did a good job, but you could tell that they were more familiar with the Pacific players than they were with Halifax. So it felt more like a local home broadcast than a national one. I assume that will be the case for most teams.

I like Rustad. She should talk more. Be a bit more expressive too.

It is odd. We didn't get those highlight packages. For PFC v HFX all we got was a post-game show. I really wanted the 90 second highlights without commentary.

I insist: just write them a note asking for what you want. They are actually spending a lot more money that has so far come in, so clearly want to engratiate themselves, if that is possible, to the CPL public.

What are they going to get, anyways? 2000 subscribers. Will it go up to 10,000? I sort of doubt it. Would someone in Saskatoon subscribe with no team to really be following, or Ottawa say?

They have 2700 followers on Twitter now, a few days ago it was 400. But it still very modest.

I believe the 90 second and 20 minute highlight packs are for use by other broadcasters. The 90 second clips are most likely for sports news shows like Sportcentre which without the game commentary allows for clean sportscaster commentary. The 20 minute clips I assume are for more in depth type soccer review shows like a once a week type show, maybe even foreign language.

Rustad was good, I like her better on colour than either Caldwell or Dunfield.

I know it's fashionable to dump on those two guys, but I can't help it. I watched the TFC - Portland match and two things are clear about Caldwell: 1. He talks too much, and 2. He tries so hard to not be a homer that he often has the wrong take e.g. saying that wasn't a foul on the TFC player when it clearly was. Dunfield I don't mind but he doesn't move the needle. He kinda just says obvious things. Rustad actually analyzes the game, says what she thinks each team needs to do, and isn't afraid to give an actual opinion. I agree with the bolded, hopefully she grows into the role. Is this her first colour commentary gig?

I'm not gonna dump on Schaad or Wheeler too much because play-by-play is hard, especially doing teams that literally no one has ever seen play. I do hope (and genuinely think) they will get better as they learn the teams and just get more reps.

Yeah, I think Schaad mis-called the goal in the PFC match in the moment, but his genuine excitement means I forgive him (for now anyway). ;)

Rustad has done CWNT matches for TSN and has been a studio analyst during WC. She doesn't speak too much, though in the past, it was a bit more than seen on Sunday.

She is the best female tv football analyst on Canadian tv. Others are way too gushing, still reluctant to say anything bad about their former teammates and their former employer, mostly uninformed about tactics and don't seem to do much prep work.

I didn't love how she kept taking credit for saying the most blatantly obvious things, but many are guilty of that. I'm just nitpicking really. Overall, I've been pretty happy with everything (the win may be a big part of that)

I just liked how she pointed out my biggest pet peeve about corner kicks, high lobbing deliveries. Just drive it hard across the box and get bodies there. If you get enough corners you will connect.

Also when Blasco came out, Schaad was surprised, and she was just like basically he wasn't that good other then a few flashes, which was a fair analysis of his game.

It is good to have the honesty.

Schaad calls play by play and does colour at the same time, he flows, talks a lot, has a pleasant voice and is knowledgeable. But he eats into the colour commentary, and left Rustad with little place or space.

So she was forced to quip and take short shots at things. I found her anecdotal, and I also think that certain comments are merely truisms: the last thing I want to hear is a commentator trying to tell players and coaches how to play the game. So the corner kick business, fair enough, but there are a thousand ways to take corners. What I did like is that she caught Chung and the other outside back at Pacific playing very high up from the first minutes, which is how many teams play now, but correct to point out. Also that HFX had little control through the centre of the park and was always putting their strikers in a hard spot (Skublak).

If Schaad is taught to breathe and wait, then Rustad could come in and comment more, and not have to force her comments into such a short window in that all or nothing way.

Edit: the possible reason for the high corners on that end was the sun the keeper's eyes--everything has a logic.  All you need is a coach to comment this and then a player interprets it. If HFX had attacked Village high into the box he might have had problems in the 2nd half.

Yeah, that's going to be an issue tonight in the first half. The coin-toss will matter.

It'll still be light at 8, Ted?

I saw that the lights were on at the stadium the other day, did you notice? I wonder if that is a way to fill in for television, somehow.

Sunset today is 8:27. Might only be a problem for a few minutes.

LOL I barely looked up the whole time I was there.  Lights are crucial for HD broadcast as I understand it so good question.

They were hooking up lights to the two wooden grandstands roof yesterday and also finishing the one roof that wasn't done yet.

Will be interesting to see the stadium in the eve with the lights tonight.

Wheeler miscalled the York 9 goal at only 3 minutes.  Dunfield corrected him that it was Telfer not Rollocks.  Also he messed up the Red card...Aparicio earned a second Yellow, again saved by Dunfield.
