Ansem
Maybe some hope for a TV deal with Bell. Rogers buys Bell's 37.5% MLSE share to now control 75% of the shares. Ivan and narduch 1
narduch
Wow. That is massive news. Not sure how I feel about that as a fan of 3 of those teams owned by MLSE. Don't be surprised if TSN does not broadcast MLS next season Ivan

Will TSN be more likely to air the CPL now? It looks to be status quo for now in terms of TSN. Bell says it has secured content rights for the Leafs and Raptors on TSN for the next 20 years through a long-term agreement with Rogers, subject to league approval. TSN will also continue to broadcast Argos and TFC through independent agreements with the respective leagues. Bell remains official telecom sponsor of the Raptors and will continue sponsorships of the Argonauts and TFC. Deal doesn't close till mid-2025. BCE has a relatively high debt load which has made investors nervous about a possible dividend cut. So, this will help to pay down the debt. It also said it will use the proceeds to continue it's transformation from telco to techco with a focus on core growth drivers. Their media division which includes TSN isn't a growth driver as seen by the continuous budget cuts and layoffs in the past 5 years. And now, it seems they don't consider owning Toronto sports teams a growth driver. Mihairokov, rkomar and narduch
Ozzie_the_parrot
Not sure what this means for soccer but with the World Cup co-hosting just around the corner I doubt there will any sudden changes. Where this leaves the Argos will be interesting to watch unfold. Bell were the ones that would have been keen on propping them up for TSN CFL coverage reasons. In contrast, Rogers and Larry Tanenbaum have always been gung ho about the NFL entering the Toronto market.
red card
Petrillo has been hired by Amazon for their Monday Night Hockey package. Edit: Amazon (but produced by the NHL) will also have a Thursday night whip around show called NHL Coast to Coast with Petrillo as host from a NJ studio. I don't know if they have been doing this segment for a while or not, but they had James Sharman on to talk about Canadian players weekends for their club teams. He also talked about the final coming up. The whole segment I think was like 5 to 7 minutes long, which was great to see. They made it sound like a weekly thing, so I guess tune in on Monday's for anyone that wants to see Canada Soccer content on one of the mainstream networks. Who knows, maybe he will give some shout outs to the CPL on occasion. narduch and Cheeta

SpursFlu
I've always said the most realistic first step to get CPL on Sportsnet or TSN is not league play but the Voyageurs Cup

We know from Footy Prime that Sharman rates the CPL pretty highly in terms of entertainment value, so presumably he would talk about it unless his marching orders are otherwise (which would be infuriating, but not surprising). They could probably get it for basically free because it's a win win win for everyone involved and you get MLS teams as well and 99% likely lifting a trophy at the end. I personally believe TFC Valour game does better ratings than just say TFC v Earthquake or Whitecaps v Philadelphia Union anyways. Just common sense tells you 2 Canadian markets is better than one. You can tell your audience a fun story. Canadians Championship, Canadiana, David v Goliath and then at the end you get a big game Edited September 24 by SpursFlu narduch and jdheid
Mihairokov
We'll see what the YouTube numbers look like for the final CPL matches but I'm hard-pressed to imagine V Cup matches on SN/TSN drawing any sort of eye-raising audience. These networks have MLB Bloopers of 2022 to re-run, afterall. narduch

I'll watch a college football game because im tinkering around the house or because the kids are gone to sleep and I've got 45 minutes to vegitate. 80% of what's on those channels, if it wasn't on TV nobody would go looking for it Edited September 24 by SpursFlu

The Canadian Championship is 16 years old and I wonder what percentage of Canadians know it exists. Marketiing all aroind needs to be so much better fro all stakeholders. SpursFlu
Let's also remember what on TSN does eye raising eyebrows? MLS sure the hell doesn't I bet if they built up the competition. A V Cup final between Whitecaps TFC or Whitecaps Forge would do better rating on TSN than 95% of MLS games Edited September 24 by SpursFlu
Watchmen
I think back sometimes to the Stanley Cup being cancelled in 2005, fans fury about, and the demand from some that AHL teams should get to compete for it. And I think - "a league being out on strike wouldn't cancel the VCup because no single league controls it." It's exactly what some sports fans want, but that narrative has never translated over to the casual fan. You can "count the blue dots" for the final this year and see that attendance is set to be abysmal for the final. Higher league teams routinely draw poor crowds for lower league teams or even teams within their own league. We all love it, but it's not reflected by the general population and I don't think the TV numbers for a final would be good. Not to mention that OneSoccer has shown no inclination so far to sell any games for cheap.
