I currently have a free preview of a couple CTV channels. I think it's CTV Comedy and CTV Drama or something like that. CTV Comedy literally plays Big Bang Theory all day, every day. And I am using the word "literally" very literally. I have never seen anything else listed for it (the preview has been on for a couple weeks I think). The other one I believe was playing one show virtually the entire time I have checked (including when I went hour by hour forward a few days worth to see what was on both channels) except for one or two episodes of a second show.

This can get on cable TV but OneSoccer doesn't have enough content?

Unfortunately I believe that the only way this matter gets resolved is if Bell or Rogers purchases a cut of One Soccer.

Don't watch much cable these days, but was in a hotel for a bit over the holidays and noticed that there was a channel called CMT when I was flicking through the channels that seemed to be just Cheers episodes 24/7, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but is still a bit bizarre given CMT stands for Country Music Television.

Must have rebranded to Cheers Marathon Television.

Looks like TSN is finally going to focus on its streaming platform to at least get to SN Now's level. The awakening started last fall when the app finally became available on smart & android tv platforms.

It's now being rebranded to TSN+. Free preview available now and revamped pricing/plans available in coming weeks.

Programming is the same ex they got rights to PGA Tour Live, augmented NFL feeds available for the playoffs and 30 for 30/other documentaries are available on-demand. TSN will be showing XFL when it relaunches next month. Note that NFL Red Zone was part of the tsn app but this release makes no reference to it.

Netflix & FIFA+ will be releasing a Qatar World Cup documentary this summer that will feature behind the scenes footage from all 32 nations.

Athletic looked at the conundrum of streaming vs cable in terms of airing sports properties. While the belief abounds that one day everyone will stream, that day is not today, and sports fans are stuck between old- and new-world paradigms.

The most notable lines from the article:

“Monetizing the streaming platforms is increasingly important because we’re running out of gas on the price increases on the established pay TV bundle.”

While major championships such as the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup finals, The Masters, etc., will remain on linear TV (while simul-streamed) for the foreseeable future, fans can expect to see the next tier down of important programming such as playoff games, move to streaming-only...early-round playoff games to begin migrating to streaming-exclusive in the next three to five years.

The rights bills still have to be paid, so it’s poor business to fill streaming services with low-interest content that doesn’t grow the subscriber base — even if it creates irritation among consumers who must pay for another service atop their cable bill.

At NBC, which has the U.S. rights to the Premier League, the programmers consider factors such as how long it’s been since a team has appeared on a particular platform. And now, the Premier League matches are getting about the same viewership on Peacock as they did on cable. ..NBC surveys its Peacock subscribers and results show that the most satisfied customers are its Premier League and WWE fans.

The mass distribution model for entertainment (including sports) has evolved several times, starting with the move from radio to television in the 1940s and ’50s, then to cable in the 1980s and ’90s.

“The inflection point was this: When the cable TV audience became as large as the broadcast TV audience, you had to satisfy both..We’re starting to reach that with broadband distribution. More and more content will be found exclusive or semi-exclusive on streaming because that’s where your audience is. Content where the audience is.”

But for now, the audience is still primarily on cable, though only in about 65 million homes, down from 100 million a decade ago. Those who have stayed are paying steep sums every month and so don’t take kindly to paying extra for what they had previously had with their cable package. (Note in Canada, the paid linear tv household penetration rate has dropped more in the past decade and is expected to be below 50% this year or next).

New media outlet covering CPL this season? seems like they do a lot of hockey stuff.

We'll see. I think Ben has been around a while and done some coverage on the lower tier teams in BC. VFC would be a good niche market for him if he does: i know the first conference call announcing their first signing had only 2 people from BC and they were both from the same blog.

Last year, there was more attention paid to Wrexham in the US entertainment media than in its football media. In contrast, Ted Lasso was discussed quite broadly & lauded in US football media & establishment circles.

This year, some of the US football media outside of ESPN has finally started to acknowledge Wrexham. Unlike Ted Lasso viewers, Welcome to Wrexham's non-footy viewers are actually watching real world football matches.

ESPN's FA Cup second round viewership was up 858% over last year, and first round action was up 100%. Wrexham vs Sheffield United FA Cup 4th round was the most watched match of the day on ESPN+ - higher than Brighton v Liverpool (FA Cup), RMA v Real Sociedad, PSG v Reims, Napoli v Roma and Bayer Leverkusen v Dortmund. The replay on this Tuesday has been moved to ESPN2 (on SN in Canada).

But not everybody is happy. One group are US-based followers of the big Spanish or Italian clubs who already believed too much attention was being lavished on British football.

The larger disgruntled group are MLS followers on social media. They wondered why ESPN hadn’t bestowed the same sort of attention on MLS. When LAFC came into the league, ESPN/MLS did do a series but nobody watched as it was largely viewed as a corporate promo. To make it more compelling, they should have probably gone back to the downfall of Chivas USA. Save the Crew is probably the closest storyline to Wrexham but it isn't a story MLS wants to tell. And unlike in Welcome to Wrexham where previous owners are taken to the woodshed, MLS doesn't want to show the Columbus proletariat lambaste Precourt.

Others wondered why people tuning in for Wrexham would be so captivated by a lower league club an ocean away but show no interest in clubs playing in their backyard. In this regard, they have failed to see that promotion/relegation has provided the backdrop for the key struggles and aspirational aspects of Welcome to Wrexham.

For CPL, unlike the angst shown especially in the pre-CPL threads here, Wrexham shows North Americans will still be interested despite being a lower rung product played on bad pitches, under bad lighting and in half decrepit stadiums.

Exactly. All the temptation and thrill of the biggest rewards and the dread and sorrow of the worst consequences is drama of the highest order.

Rare to see good words proactively said about OneSoccer from Rogers 680 radio in Toronto. And after coming back to Canada, Labbe has changed her tune compared to her uninformed tweets about Celebration Tour matches not being covered. But maybe she still isn't aware CSB is paying Mediapro.

Meanwhile in Japan.

OneSoccer digital content person also said their CANMNT related livestreams outperformed other football content such as from MLS, TSN, Mark Goldbridge etc..amongst Canadian based viewers. I assume he is referring to pre/post match streams & World Cup watch alongs.

It's still crazy to me how silent OneSoccer is about your subscription coming to an end. I keep getting the year subscription (I haven't gone for Fubo, I've stuck with OneSoccer straight up). I was watching the She Believes cup and U17 World Cup Qualifying. I had to miss the semi final U17 WCQ tonight. I don't expect the game to be available already, but I thought it can't hurt to check (I already tried checking CONCACAF's youtube and man is that a spoiler minefield. I think I almost had the score spoiled but luckily I saw the "Highlights" in the title before seeing what was on the thumbnail. I saw the other semi final score right on a video thumbnail). Anyways so I signed in to OneSoccer on the device I have handy at the moment, and apparently my account has expired. No notifications, no emails, just all of a sudden you are cut off.

Now I am subscribing again. I noticed my favourite team is listed as "York 9". So I thought I'd update it to "York United". The favourite teams list is a drop down, and there is no "York United", just "York 9". It also includes FC Edmonton, Ottawa Fury, and CF Montrealy (including that adorable y at the end), and it doesn't have the new Vancouver team.

I used my credit card info from my browser to auto fill my new payment information. It looked like it did nothing. I highlighted the empty credit card fields to find that the text was the exact same shade of grey as the background 😆
