I really dislike it but it is the way of the world. I have distinct memories of a person dying because a flare went awry at a Barcelona stadium. I'm living in a city that has had terrorist attacks for decades, ETA then Al Qaeda variants (killing Canadians no less), but then the perpetrators say they wanted to something even bigger in a higher profile place. So we know what that means. There was no security whatsoever at the last J League match I went to. Mind you, things are a little different here. There's no security around away fans, and after the game, both sets of fans end up walking to the station at the same time. Mind you, it was four years ago the last time I went to a game here, and now that I'm back, I hope nothing's changed, especially with the Olympics coming up. As for away fans, there are only minor problems now, and only with small % of fans. You get a group of a few hundred being obnoxious in a drunken binge in the city centre, could be English, Dutch, Turkish, whatever. But really only a small part and you rarely see confrontrations. This has changed dramatically for the better. After all, both groups are taking the metro to the game, and back, etc, you cannot really make a full division between groups--sure, they try to put the majority of visiting fans in a fenced off area, ask them to wait to leave and be escorted out, but the rest of the stadium is full of visiting fans as well, and I have rarely seen problems, at least since the 90s. Except, in Barcelona, with Espanyol supporters, that can be vicious. Not even with Real Madrid supporters is it really that bad, neither here nor in Madrid. I went as a visiting fan to an Espanyol game once, and people threw their sandwiches at us instead of eating them!

What a waste, unless the sandwiches were horrible, which would never happen in St. Vincent with such a great bakery so close to the ground. My point was supposed to be more about the security (or lack thereof) when entering the stadium, but I got sidetracked.
