Impactsupporter
Shouldn't this concept be considered by other teams and areas who want to test the waters before joining the CanPL??? I could see this happening in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and Quebec City, where Select teams could be formed to play against high level teams and at the same time gauge fan interest, local talent etc. But where else could this be done?? This topic is now open for debate and discussion.
deschamp86
It certainly worked for Halifax so hopefully it works out for Saskatoon as well. This this strategy is best for smaller markets like the ones that you had already mentioned

Yes, and the fact it's only happening in Saskatoon suggests nothing is hugely imminent elsewhere.

Not necessarily. I think only 3 of the current teams did something similar.
dyslexic nam
Yeah, Montreal apparently has a lo0t of interest, and no need or appetite to test the market. I could see it as a good strategy for markets on the fringe but not as an essential step for everyone (which is why I think the implication drawn is unfounded). toontownman
Entirely depends on the market. Some areas have a hotbed of talent to build upon or marketable support in the community. It's a smart soft launch and build that gives everyone an indication of how ready the community is from Supporters, players, coaches, facilities and operational staff. The worst thing anyone can do is jump two footed in and have to wind up in a few years because they weren't ready.

True, but what we are also not hearing and seeing elsewhere is moves to build/modify stadia as happened for example in Surrey, while the plan in that regard in a Saskatoon context is already known, and meetings between would be owners and fan groups as happened for example in K/W in a similar way to what Joe Belan did recently in both Saskatoon and Regina. Don't doubt there are lots of groups potentially interested elsewhere. Laval is the obvious one but that still looks quite preliminary given all we seem to get is Alex Bunbury sitting on a sofa making upbeat comments about announcements that never quite seem to happen. The timeline to a 2020 launch for new teams is getting quite tight now, if nothing is already visible in terms of a credible stadium plan and front office staff hires. Bear in mind that the 2019 franchises were all known by the middle of last summer. It will be interesting to see if anybody new gets added to CSA membership at the AGM next month.
