Posted about him in the defectors thread. I believe he has been called up by a Finnish youth team.

Looks like it happened. A pair of friendlies versus local sides in preseason form. https://www.palloliitto.fi/jalkapallouutiset/pikkuhuuhkajat-nimetty-tammikuun-leirille

If this thread needs to move, you'll have no objection from me.

So yeah, apparently this callup was unofficial and didn't tie him anywhere, so theorethically he could still represent either team. But today I heard from the inside that Jonas has already decided he will play for Finland and not for Canada.

Shame for you guys, he was excellent on the ball again as we won the game 2-1 - though slight blame can be portioned on him and his stopper partner as they failed to follow a rebound from the bar allowing the opposing player to head it home. He's been so good, I meanI usually try to avoid getting overhyped about new signings - but based on these two games alone I would certainly make a prediction that he's gonna play in some higher league than Finland within two years for sure, and I suppose that standard would bring him near your national team level already. I mean, if Charlie Trafford and Tosaint Ricketts have made it..

Suppose I will be directing my Jonas reports into your defectors thread in the future, apart from possibly a bit of Boakai coverage if I happen to catch some of his games I guess.

Sounds like another solid performance from Jonas again. His side, VPS, are on their way to the semis of the Finnish Cup. Great praise for him here, saying he is playing strong and is growing in confidence, especially  considering some of the more experienced players playing for Inter Turku: (in Finnish from today) http://www.veikkausliiga.com/uutiset/2019/03/30/maalimme-olivat-todella-hienoja-vuorinen-iloitsi-valierapaikasta

@pöhelö any thoughts on his development?

In the six cup games, 5 of them have been vs Veiikkausliga sides and all 90 minute performances, if any indicator means he will be a starter for VPS this season. Oh and did I forget to mention he's a CB??? Although too bad he's said he wants to represent Finland and not Canada

Jonas has been called up to play proper U23 friendlies for Finland vs Slovakia and Sweden next month. Last tune-ups before Euro qualifiers in the fall, apparently: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vepsu.fi/uutiset/haukioja-ja-haekkinen-pikkuhuuhkajiin%3fformat=amp

Quite an accomplishment for the kid in a very short period of time after leaving the Caps setup. Too bad he isn't on the backburner for Canada anymore:

In June Jonas played 90 min for Finland's U23s in a loss to North Macedonia and 11 min. in a 3-2 loss vs. Sweden. Finland's U23s start official Euro 2021 qualifiers in September, I think.

What?!?

Mistake. Sorry. It is Euro 2021 U23 qualifying that starts in the fall, I think.

Finnish culture is strong but this is still very strange career wise for this young man.  Finland is respectable but pretty bleak in terms of tournament prospects.  All he'll have to look forward to is qualifying matches.

It's  called U21. That's why I was confused as well.(Even though the players can be up to 23 when the final tournament rolls around)

Jonas starting again for VPS in Finland. His team is playing Mariehamn and are sitting at the bottom of the table. He's been playing a mix of DM and CB and, interestingly, seems to have earned the confidence of the second manager, the first having been sacked earlier in the season. At 20 I'd like to see him transfer to at least a bigger and more secure club in Finland, if not look to another option in Europe.

I feel like he must have some promise to have been identified so quickly at club and national level and to have played as much as he has this season. Could a guy like this be useful to Canadian Olympic qualifying, even if is currently considering the same for Finland this fall? He might not have ruled us out just yet...

It's too bad because I  get the sense he'd be our #2 CB right now..

Would he really be ahead of Cornelius, James or maybe a rep (Vitoria?) from the over 30 crowd?  U-23's could use him sure.....but has he made any noise about repping canada??

Jonas has been called by Finland to play U23 Qualifying matches vs Malta and Denmark. Something tells me he's not necessarily "gone" yet so well worth tracking, imo. Just for fun what would a comparable Canadian pool player be, young CB/DM and playing every week at club and getting international sniffs? Emile Legault or a Kadin Chung?
