The Importance of Alphonso Davies

Watched the entire Bayern match and Davies hardly put a foot wrong all match, of course the OG was very unfortunate and his positioning could have been a bit better but these things happen in football. The commentators thought it was very unlucky, and was a very difficult ball to defend.

Bayern as a whole were quite dreadful all night. Gnarby had a stinker until the last 15 minutes, Boteng with a lot of mis-passes out of the back, Perišić struggled and Coman was inefficient for the most part. Mueller came on as a sub and was totally out of sync with his teammates. But this is what makes these guys world class, Gnarby and Mueller both had their big moments and were clinical.

Davies was rated highest on the team, along with Perišić (questionable) according to Bild.

He had some very positive moments going forward in the first half and was great to see him rebound after the OG as you could see who was stunned and upset. These are the learning experiences that’ll help him develop into a true professional at the highest level.

Bayern pull back the win in the last 10 minutes.

This is huge! Had they lost, he would have felt the full brunt of the blame regardless if it was deserved. May have led to the coach sitting him for a while to save his own job.

They really have no choice but to play him at this point with the injuries

Partially culpable for the 5th goal.  Should have marked the guy to prevent the tap in rather than try to protect the line.

Commentators said he had a decent game, and I think (under the circumstances) they are about right.  Assisted the only goal, hit the post with a good solo effort, but also was part of a def that bled 5 goals.  Even with the red, that isn’t good.  They also attacked down his side a lot, and he often had to leave the middle to race out and cover the wide man - who often hit a good cross in as a result. With a man down, I am not sure if that is poor positioning or just the way it is when you are 10 v 11.  Kovac certainly didn’t feel the need to get him off the field, so that may mean something.
