N1ckbr0wn
For all you FIFA Ultimate team nerds on FIFA 20, Davies just got an absolutely filthy TOTS Bundesliga card this morning... edit: this might be the highest OVR Canadian FUT card of all time, but if memory serves me correctly Atiba had a 94 OVR a couple years back Edited May 15, 2020 by N1ckbr0wn Red and White, IceCreamMan and johnyb
beachesl
Great cross at 21" by Alonzo to Lewandowski that L should have scored. Argentinean commentators full of praise for "El Canadiense", referring to how he contributes to "harmony". Never thought, in my long life, I would ever be cheering for Bayern Munich! Disallowed Bayern goal and good attacks by Union adding to tension and interest of the match. beachesl
Still 1-0 at 77 " . Back and forth, Bayern cannot put this to bed, despite mega-potential-assists by Davies, who has really been playing more forward (when not tracking back). As I said , interesting... Edit 80" Finally Lewandowski puts it away (after missing goals after many many great crosses from Daives) after a great cross by Kimmich. That should be it for Bayern. beachesl
With the 5 substitutes, Bayern should take Davies off given his yellow card. Think they have only subbed
beachesl
86" great tracking back and bossy move in own goal area to run out the ball by Davies. Finishes 2-0. Lewandoski misses a lot, and Bayern needs more stability in the mid-feild if it wants to continue its possession game. Davies largely solid both ways. SpursFlu
Fun to watch... Davies had a half dozen moments of unreal skill. Even a couple cheeky high fives in there
Bdog
Second half was a bit sloppier but he looked great in the first half, unlucky not to get an assist.
Trois Reds
He definitely had some rust, but considering the layoff, he played well. Good game to watch.
Kent
Early on he got beat along the end line, and was caught out of position once, but he settled into the game after that. Made a good block on a break and got good position on a player on a play that could have been a goal opportunity. Some good crosses, could have had an assist or two. Shortdutchcanuck
Trending on Twitter again as he often is now after Bayern games, partly due both to his superhuman speed (some want to see a race between either Davies and Mbappe or Davies and Usain Bolt) and his impact on the game. Arguments among fans of many nationalities about whether he has become the best LB in the world, or just top 5, or possibly still top 10 only due to small sample size. Obinna
Wasn't his best game today, but he did his job. Mostly conservative play, perhaps just trying to get back into the swing of things.
Aird25
That's now 5 shutouts in a row, and they've outscored their opponents 14-0. I really wish Champions League was still being played, I think they'd have a good shot. I thought Davies had an effective game, but he showed a bit of rust and didn't get stuck in as often as he usually does after picking up the early yellow. Unnamed Trialist
Most of Bayern were rusty today, Boateng, Thiago, Goretzka. Union played fairly well considering. Davies had a typical game, for me he was not rusty. Great going forward. Was also surprised he did not get subbed having the yellow, but maybe they just asked him to watch for that. CanadianSoccerFan
The Times of London published an interesting story on Monday about Phonsie's recruitment to Bayern. It's behind a paywall but there was some really interesting information. - Bayern initially dismissed any hype around Davies because "we do not look in the MLS". An agent finally convinced a club rep to have a look in 2017. - Man Utd came on the scene and had the nerve to ask Phonsie to come on trial in January 2018 to which the Whitecaps told them to get stuffed. - After Bayern had agreed the transfer, Man Utd came back in again with a $10M USD offer, far less than Bayern's which Vancouver once again told them to get stuffed. - PSG and Barcelona also made late offers of unknown amount. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/how-english-football-missed-out-on-alphonso-davies-the-bundesligas-breakout-star-vrr953702 Edited May 17, 2020 by CanadianSoccerFan Obinna, Greatest Cockney Rip Off and johnyb
SpursFlu
The Man U trial was common knowledge in Vancouver. Many were critical of the Whitecaps at the time. I think it also coincided with a Canadian camp Obinna

Ah yah but there was an article in The Province that kinda pushed people in that direction. It was around the time a lot of people, media etc were kinda looking for anything to try and make Robbo and or the club look incompetent. So yah the fans but the media I think kicked it off a bit. Just my recollection Edited May 18, 2020 by SpursFlu
Bertuzzi44
I thought Davies played well, but definitely not his best. I think there was a little bit of rust. He was also robbed of an assist when he put the ball on a plate for Gnabry but Gnabry tried to do too much in the box....

There was not a single rumour or suggestion, and I can assure you, as a club member and here for decades, that no signing ever took place without something being linked to someone in a press rumour. Apart from that, considering they moved for Ballou and it was not working out that great, the take on MLS was tempered, perhaps more here than for other clubs. On top of that, we'd paid far more for Dembele, as a dynamic fast wing able to play both sides, we were never going to make a move for a player who, arguably, was his clone--though less proven and with a lower scoring rate. Unnamed Trialist
The lead colour commentator for Mediapro, Maldini (no relation to Paolo, real name is Julio Maldonado), who has his own football program as well, gave high praise to Davies throughout. At the start he argued he was, along with Guerreiro at Dortmund, the best back in the Bundesliga, "but Davies is probably the better of the two". Then, at the end, he said Davies had a great game, that he was probably man of the match. As I posted above, what was particularly great was that he was fully on form, there was no indication of him being out of shape. Mind you, Müller was too, Gnabry, even Pavard ended up having a strong match. 15 years ago I had a chance to go to a Union Berlin game but I opted out as the trip out east would have been long from where I was in Berlin, still regret it. That is a great little stadium.
cronaldo7
I’ve watched every Bayern game this year and didn’t think it was Alphonsos best but that is just where the bar is set right now. He has put in so many high-level performances that he has elevated himself to being nit picked a little, even at this young of an age. Very exciting to think about that because sky is truly the limit. Thought he was great going forward but thought he had a little rust but so did many players. Excited for the upcoming matches! Janusz Michalli had very high praises. He thought Phonzy was the best player on the pitch without a doubt. https://mobile.twitter.com/JanuszMichallik/status/1262522300575948800 Obinna, SthMelbRed, johnyb and 1 other

I watched and thought that Phonz was definitely rusty. Not terrible, but towards the lower end of the spectrum for his performances since taking over in the LB spot back in October. I was surprised to find so many on here speaking of his performance in such glowing terms the next day. I'm confident that he'll improve this weekend in advance of the massive title showdown at Dortmund the following week, though.
