General Discussion on Canadian Youth Teams

Recommended Posts

I dont think it did, and I didnt hear anyone squawk about it.  It should have happened right after Herdman scouted the MLS camps (we heard all about that) and got all those kids together.  This skipping camps, skipping friendlies etc has just gotten to be a bad habit.

Didn't know exactly where to post this article, but since it has to do with youth development, thought it might fit here.
https://theprovince.com/sports/soccer/mls/vancouver-whitecaps/j-j-adams-whitecaps-aim-to-come-in-from-the-cold-with-revitalized-academy-system?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1553234498

No matter how the Whitecaps try to spin it, this U23 squad is such a makeshift solution. Friendlies just don't cut it. Players need meaningful situations in competitive matches to develop. Is Mukumbilwa really better off with this travelling squad than he would be on loan at Valour for example?

It is interesting to see that all 3 of the Canadian MLS teams have a different setup for bridging the gap between their youth sides and the MLS squad.

Hmmm, here is what the competition is up to.

I guess we should be lucky we did the U-17 camp in mexico.  We were disappointed Millar or Tabla etc didnt get into the game against Guiana, but maybe we could have had a U-23 camp/friendly in tandem with the mens and gotten some of those guys some game time.  Along with Bayiha, Choiniere, Pantemis, Shome, Daniels, Fraser, Okello, Bair, Baldisimo, Coyln, Hasal, Norman, TMG, Kinube, Hundal, Boskovic etc, just from north america.

Choiniere and Baldisimo...but fill your boots, where are your picks for a u-23??  I've got about 3/4 of a camp there.  Chung, Zajac, Verhoeven, Carducci, Doe.....not counting guys called to the senior team.

I was just giving you a hard time really. I have no clue where your allegiances lie, but I had assumed you meant the younger of the Choiniere and Baldisimo brothers. They were the last ones called into national team camps. Verhoeven was the glaring omission for me from your original list. He's been key in recent camps. I'd also probably bring Chung and Carducci along, but I'm much more familiar with the players out west. I don't even know if I've ever watched some of those TFC/Fury/Impact players play a full match

No worries, we are all V's eh??    Plenty of those kids I've only seen USL youtube feeds, and sometimes they are hard to watch.  Still a shame they couldnt work something like that out.  Have 1 dual camp for senior and u-23, integrate the youngsters in with the vets and play a u-23 friendly in the window.  But I guess if we dont have money for the senior team, its a pipedream to support the u-20 or u-23/olympic teams.

We lost another youth player...but this time to tennis.

Felix Auger-Alliasssime said football was his second best sport. The Telegraph compared FA2 to Mbappé.

“In football, I can be pretty handy. I think it's my second best sport. I was a left winger. I can run pretty fast. Either I make it into the centre or I cut and shoot. I have done tests on my speed, but I don’t have the records. But I think he [Mbappe] would be a bit faster than me.”

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/2019/03/28/tennis-prodigy-felix-auger-aliassime-rapidly-making-first-name/

It's good to see a golden generation of Canadian athletes cropping in the major sports the world plays. It started with the 2010 Olympics with Canada finally come to the fore in terms of winter sports. Now, we're seeing it in men's basketball, tennis and men's football.

Everyone should read this. Why can’t the CSA get their shit together in the scouting.

I don’t understand, how does this relate to the CSA? Are you saying this kid is better than some who’ve been called at his age? Have you seen him play? Or is this just your regular schtick?

It relates because he was scouted by  Romania and they got him. Why didn’t the CSA scout him. On wait the U17 was basically MLS  Academy players. How many times are we gonna read articles about other countries scouting and reaching out to young players and we hear nothing about the CSA doing that.  And I know what you’re going to say well how do we know that they didn’t well if they did he would have sent it and seems like good chance he would play for us.

I have seen video and he’s a good player.

Please share this video where you determined he was overlooked by the CSA.

And let’s mark this post and see where he’s at in a couple years to see if you’re right.

This kid was with TFC academy, played in L10.  It looks like he was playing for romanian youth teams while at TFC.  Somehow I dont think is a scouting thing...they would have known about him as you even point out, our youth teams are heavy on MLS academy kids.  He might have already decided then that he wanted to go to europe and play for romania eventually.     You cant win them all and who knows what he'll end up at??  So hard to say at 15-16.

They have improved but just think of how much better things could have been if they had got their act together years ago. The CSA next to hockey has had the most registered players playing this game since the early 80’s and still do. Yes things have improved immensely with the CSA but it should have never taken this long so many waisted years with all those players playing the game in this country . Let’s hope things keep improving.

Interesting to note from that article that the Hamilton-Toronto drive was too long for him to join TFC earlier. Hopefully CPL teams can get youth academies set up in the not too distant future to relieve this kind of problem. Then even if the CSA is just relying on pro team's academies, they will have greater coverage.

But yeah, what Bison said about his choice to play for Romania.

For me personally, I think this is the next massive step needed for the CPL. We've seen what's been done with 3 academies. Add 8 more to compete with the big guys for the elite talent.

Whitecaps and TFC programs are the most susceptible to seeing the ramifications of increased opportunities for kids.
