This is great for Dayne, hopefully he can help our keeper depth down the road.

There was a twitter rumour about him being courted by CPL teams shortly after he won the Championship. Looks like the existence of another league has caused MLS to pony up for the best talent.

Isn't too bad as an option, even though I'm sure that if he'd tear it up in the CPL, MLS would still be coming.

At long as he gets a USL loan and lot's of PT, it's all good.

CPL is especially perfect for a young keeper imo.  You impress in CPL you have a very realistic shot of being 3rd keeper on the MNT immediately.  If the CSA is going to toss out a call to a CPL player for optics there is no more likely position.

In St. Clair’s position it might be best to go to MLS camp and see if he can win a spot right away and battle.. then either mid season or next season get in a position to be a starter somewhere.

It is very hard to see at this stage. The majority of players taken in the MLS SuperDraft will never even play in the league, so in that case, he likely wouldn't be on the MNT radar. However, there are cases of some keepers like Andre Blake, who played two or three years of college ball, signed a GA contract, and now he is one of the top keepers in the league. If he ends up going that route, he will be on our radar for sure. Only time and performances will tell.

Alex Bono would be another one of note who took the same route, albeit without the GA contract. Heck Dayne St. Clair doesn't seem like a horrible backup for Toronto or Montreal.

Bono was a GA signing.  And Montreal still has Beaulieu and Pantemis (for CDN keepers) and Diop.  TFC only have Sewell, who I dont have much confidence in.  They need to bring in someone, but with a 6 pick they might be able to get a decent outfield player.

It would be nice to see Montgomery in Van, maybe they can bring him along like Tim Parker.  But MLS loves those super tall CB, he'll go high in that first round.

They have a lot of capital with which to play, and they need to generate some media hype in the local market.  Much will depend upon how Montgomery does at the combine this weekend but I could really see a deal happening where this young guy ends up in Vancouver.

A couple of CB's...it would be great if one of them could survive and show to be at least of the level of a Henry. Don't know about the succes rate of the MLS draft but still beats no subjects at all.

It would be interesting to see some data about the success rate of different positions with respect to the draft. For some reason alot more sucessful defenders and keepers come to mind than attacking players but I have zero evidence to prove it.

My guess is that CB and keepers usually take a bit longer to develop, so the handi cap of turning pro when they are 21-22 doesnt hurt them as much.

Potentially a great draft for us. Both GA players should go early and both defenders are thought of highly too. Feel sorry for Camara! The stats and likelihood of them going on and getting consistent minutes in the MLS is always low from the draft but there is a good chance 4 out of the 5 Canadians could get picked first round.

Might make the draft interesting for once!

In 2017 we had Awuah and Wright go in later first round with A. Reid and Shome both rated high before the draft only to drop to the second round.  None of them got more than a cup of coffee in MLS. The GA tag usually means the team will stick with them longer, but its a heck of a jump and most will need a USL/CPL stint if they make it at all.

Given the poor hit rate of MLS Draft some of these guys will inevitably end up needing other development opportunities.  As CanPL gets better it will hopefully properly develop some of these guys who can't make the jump to MLS playing time straight out of NCAA.

That's why I don't particularly care if CanPL is better or worse than USL right out of the gate.  Coaching, playing style, and proper league structure will be much more important.  We don't have the city sizes, population densities, or sheer number of potential franchises available to USL.  But there is no reason we can't be better at developing players.

Hopefully Callum Montgomery for example can develop into an MLS starter quickly.  That would be great for our national team.   But if he needs something to fall back on, he spends a few years at Pacific FC, gets some quality coaching in a highly competitive environment and takes his game to the next level.  From there he can move on, either back to MLS, or to Europe.  Or he can simply be a star in a rapidly improving league.

The Canucks in this draft class have a safety net no other class has had.

There are 5 mock drafts on MLS website. This is where the Canadians are listed.

Montgomery is: 4, 4, 7, 3, 5

Buchanan is: 3, 9, 1, 9, not first round

St. Clair is: 6, 6, 12, 1, not first round

Millar is: not first round, not first round, not first round, 20, 6

Comisa is: not first round, not first round, not first round, 32, 17

The last mock is a bit of an outlier. The first 4 seem pretty consistent, but as we have seen with the draft before it can be such a crapshoot.

Combine will say a lot..like shome who fell to late 2nd round after a bad combine..looking back at 2017 the top 9 picks are playing 10+ games/season in the league and after that theres only a few like hayes, epps, bronico

From the 2018 draft seems the player who got the most playing time is #6 mueller then #53 krolicki

And then theres those who sign homegrown contracts before the draft and +-5 of them go on to play 10+ games in the league for at least a couple seasons

Theres also a few who get drafted but still decide to go abroad like Frantzdy Pierrot who got drafted in the 2nd round in 2018 but signed with Mouscron at 23 and is now a starter in the belgian top tier

So theres not many starters coming out of the drafts but its still interesting..a few starters and many backups or players who will go straight to usl championship or league one
