Can't stop watching that goal.  Thank God for Jonathan David.

If that had been...

Tos Ricketts, the long pass would have hit him on the ass, killing the play

Rob Friend, he would have been a mile offside

Olivier Occean, he would have brought the ball down, only to put the brakes on and pass it to Atiba

DeRo, he would have brought the ball down just as well, taken it into the box and shot squarely into the keeper's gloves

Radzinski, he would have brought the ball down just as well, taken it into the box and shot wide

That first touch was world class and he still had to beat 2 defenders and the keeper. I don't think any player on our squad can score the type of goals that David seems to do with relative ease. Even his placement of the ball that hit the post was class. Having said that, still think he is not being deployed optimally.

Agree with all your points but especially the last one. The problem isn’t so much that he’s not deployed properly; the bigger problem is we don’t have enough quality players that know how to play with him. Too often he makes the right play and those around him can’t get him the ball where/when he needs it.

This is the most Canadian soccer Canadian soccer post ever.

Ali Gerba, he wouldn't have bothered with the flick or any of that other fancy stuff he woulda just backheel one-touch volleyed and chipped the keeper.

It's just so fun to look at this. 9 games.

Rank Name Career Caps Goals
1 Dwayne De Rosario 1998–2015 81 22
2 Dale Mitchell 1980–1993 55 19
3 John Catliff 1984–1994 44 18
4 Tosaint Ricketts 2011– 59 16
Alex Bunbury 1986–1997 66 16
6 Ali Gerba 2005–2011 31 15
7 Igor Vrablic 1984–1986 36 12
8 Jonathan David 2018– 9 11
Carlo Corazzin 1994–2004 59 11
Kevin McKenna 2000–2012 63 11

A couple times in the broadcast I think I heard them say 9 goals in 11 games, because even that is crazy good. The commentators can't make their brains accept it's 11 goals in 9 games, even when it's written right in front of them.

But wait, lets not forget, there is also Cavallini with 10 goals in 15 games.  Not too bad either.  What a time to be alive (and Canadian)!

Sorry

Lucas Cavallini on 10, Hoilett and Larin on 8. These guys are a goal or three away from being on this list. That's a high perctentage of active players making up that top 8 list.

Hoilett is on 9 I think.

Him, david and Cavallini are going to be 3 of the top 5 before this cycle is over.

Not enough to beat haiti apparently <_<

The best coaches in the world will tell you that championships are built on learning from difficult moments and past failures.  A group of good young players almost inevitably need to grow into a good team, and usually it takes some crushing disappointments for this to happen. Fans, on the other hand, fixate overly on the negative after losses and overly on the positive after victories.  In other words, they get too low with the lows and too high with the highs.

So, if you are going to base your opinion of John Herdman on crushing minnows you are being overly optimistic and certainly naive.

But if you are going to base your whole opinion of a coach on one team you are being overly pessimistic and fixating too much on a narrow window.

Look, the jury is still out on Herdman, and his arrogance certainly does not help to look at him objectively.  But we have to try, and based on his own rhetoric we should expect 3 to 4 points out of the 2 matches with the US.  If not, that is another strike, and he is walking a very fine line.

We need to beat them to make the Hex.  Do you consider not making the Hex a failure?

Yes. Absolutely. But is Herdman really to blame for that? The rankings go back before him. When has beating the US ever been a given?

This is no different than any other cycle where we have needed to beat Honduras, Costa Rica, Mexico or Panama at home in order to make the Hex.  This times its USA.  We have fired coaches for failing at this hurdle before.  Herdman should be held to the same standard.

I agree to an extent but the fact is we are still in qualifying even without beating the States.. not eliminated yet.

That is a very different standard and if you can't see that, there is no reason to continue a conversation as you are letting your bias completely distort your views

If we miss the Hex I could see that but if we make the Hex that will be incredibly tough.

The pace these guys are scoring at will drop if we make the Hex, but I still see them challenging for that.

Hoilett only needs 6 to tie Gerba - he may get another 1-2 against the USA. If we make semi final and final, another 1-2 is possible.

And the Hex is 10 games, so even if he scores 0 between now and then, another 6 goals in 10 games during that round is not out of the question.

Then we gotta factor in Gold Cup 2021...

Baring a massive dip in form and/or serious injury, I don't see how Junior doesn't at least move level with Ricketts, who is on 16 goals.
