North American Soccer League Announces Cancellation Of 2018 Season

The NASL announced that it has canceled the 2018 Season after failing to receive a preliminary injunction preventing the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) from revoking the NASLs Division II status.
NASL Interim Commissioner Rishi Sehgal issued the following statement: “The focus of the antitrust suit to date has been obtaining a preliminary injunction to save the 2018 Season. Unfortunately, with USSF’s decision and the loss of the preliminary injunction, playing the 2018 Season is no longer a possibility. The focus of the antitrust suit now shifts to securing the long-term advancement of soccer in this country, not only for the NASL, but for all soccer fans, clubs, and communities impacted by the USSF’s restrictions on competition.  Also, the NASL is prosecuting a breach of fiduciary duty action against certain USSF Board members for conflicts of interest and derelictions of duty which have harmed the NASL and countless other constituents in U.S. Soccer. The NASL and its clubs will look at all avenues to return to the field for the 2019 Season.

NASL's Rishi Sehgal was on Sirius radio this afternoon after to talk about the league's announcement on the cancellation of the 2018 season. A few highlights :

- Rishi said the long time it took for the appeal decision to come down hindered the preparation for a 2018 season.

- Said they will look to exist outside the USSF's PLS and consider all options for next year.

- As to one of the reasons the NASL decided not to apply for Division 3 for 2018, there was no evidence USSF would have ultimately granted it.

Of the five NASL clubs left in the league, three will play their reserve teams in NPSL this year :

Miami FC

New York Cosmos

Jacksonville Armada FC

Another will play their reserve team in the UPSL (California United FC). The 5th club, Puerto Rico FC, has not announced plans for 2018 and is having to also deal with the affects of the hurricane that hit the island last year.

Talk of a NISA tournament or fall season (Aug-Oct) this year is a possibility as well for the NASL clubs first teams after the short NPSL season is over at the end of July.
