Wow, that's a really long list! Looks like he took the time to find canadian players everywhere particularly in NA We could do like a CPL Fantasy Draft, everyone picks their top 20 players or something like that. Anyone else up for it? I am really hoping that they have a rule where 75% of the spots must be canadian, otherwise what's the point if US pros and Internationals come here and take over As Peter Montopoli once said in an interview ''This will be for canadians by canadians'' Fingers crossed that the CSA fulfills that promise

Good work,

It would also be cool to begin adding (or create a second list) players who have not yet turned pro, but have the potential to with the CanPL launch.

As a general rule, I would consider the top 'challege cup' level players in the top senior provincial leagues (ex. Alberta Major Soccer League, Manitoba Major Soccer League, Nova Scotia Soccer League, etc.). Strength varies from province to province, but these leagues are made up of current and ex CIS players, ex Canada Games players, and sometimes contain former pros (Paul Hamilton plays for Edmonton Scottish still), or players who have had professional trials but never caught on for one reason or another. What about guys who spent time at an academy but left for whatever reason?

It's all well and good to throw together a list of our low level professional players, but obviously very few of those guys are going to come home to play in this league, especially if they are overseas.

This league is suppose to ultimately increase our pool of professional players, so we'd be smart to track guys who are not on the radar at all for this league, but should be. Like, I don't think Kianz Froese is leaving Germany to play in the CanPL, or even Aleman.

There are a lot of talented amateurs who'd be chomping at the bit and these are the guys who should be filling out rosters at the back end.

Exactly! Very interesting article on the11 with some quotes from a few PDL/CIS players that really drive this point home:

https://the11.ca/what-a-canpl-will-mean-for-us-canadian-players-speak-up/

“And, last year, we got to the final, but no one paid attention to us. The MVP? An American? The coach of the year? American. The PDL even made up a creativity award (Creative Player of the Year) that they could give to an American.”

Dylon Powley

“The league [PDL] is geared towards Americans. They are always promoting the American players. The last three years, a Canadian team has made it to the finals. But our players don’t get signed.

“A new Canadian league would get a lot of interest from Canadian players. People will be surprised at the number of Canadian players who will come looking for trials.”

Tofa Fakunle

Emmanuel Dolo is a player I hope gets a chance in the new CanPL.

I've spoken about him before, basically he is an U-18 player from Newfoundland (Liberia originally, I think). Spent time in the Ottawa Fury academy before it disbanded. Striker who can play out wide. Physical with a lot of pace and good feet and a great left foot. Few friends from back home have coached him and I have seen him play in webcasts of the Canada Games and also last year's club nationals (u-18 I think) playing for Fieldians. He's also been included in a couple U-15 Eastern Canada ID camps in the past.

Would love to see him get a shot.

I have 4 names in mind; and they're all in League 1 Ontario - Chris Manella ~ Former TFC Player (2016) Has 3 caps for the senior side and 9 for U23. Now is with Vaughan Azurri - Giuliano Frano ~ Played with Boston College Eagles in NCAA D1, then played for the reserve sides of Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps. Now is with Sigma FC - Jonathan Grant ~ 23 year old, has played with FC Montreal and Swope Park Rangers in USL. Was a starter in Canada's last U23 Olympic Qualifying Team. - And Finally Forward: Elvir Gigolaj ~ Former FC Edmonton Player, trialed with Hertha BSC Berlin but had some paper work problems and in the past 2 seasons has scored 39 goals in 37 games for FC London! Man, i really feel super optimistic about CanPL; we can expand our list of professionals by a large margin and give some talented youngersts and experienced players a chance at demostrate themselves first hand Any thoughts?

One thing I think should be said that hasn't been said yet is the CPL should go after some of the Canadian National team regs in MLS. I get why people here would be iffy on it but I feel it's important to the league's image to show that it can bring those guys over from the MLS right away. I'm not saying go after everyone but someone like de Jong or Ricketts would be well suited to help the CPL's early growth and if you got someone younger like Akindele or Osorio (who there was talk about earlier) you might be able to send a real shockwave about the league.

When the league does start, it'll be better off having these guys for marketing than a number of guys who've been playing in leagues unheard of by most casuals (cept for maybe Johnson, who would still be useful in on pitch). If your branding is Canadian soccer than there's no better way than having some of your better known players playing in your league.

I wonder if De Jong or Ricketts are well known enough to drum up interest for the average soccer fan? I doubt it. It is only hardcore Canadian fans who are familiar with those guys and we are going to be behind the team regardless. Perhaps that would work on a local level, but it would depend on the market. Like De Jong might capture interest in southern Ontario or the lower mainland, but I don't know about Halifax or Saskatchewan...

Realistically, I don't think any name would be more than a blip. Guys you mentioned like De Jong and Ricketts (and I'd add Osorio) I could see helping the CPL narrative by helping decent MLSers get more playing time, but that narrative probably only matters to a quarter of the stadium

A ton of names so far while still missing some decent level players..

Issey Nakajima-Farran, Joseph Di Chiara, Ethan Gage, Gavin McCallum to name a few.

Anyone remember the name of the kid at Crawley Town a few years back? Played a few game in league one but never stuck.. similar to D'Agostino I always thought it was the weirdest thing that these guys went from League One England to out of football.. I don't think many realize how high of a level that is, relatively of course.
