What do you think was the best move of Summer 2017?

Feel this is a worthwhile talk as it's something that matters to the MNT. Vote and comment. Consider stuff like the role they're likely taking and the level of play.

I would pick Milan to Red Star because it's our #1 keeper getting serious minutes with a big club both in the league and likely Europa.

It has got to be Piette going to MLS....

I'm tempted to agree. It's giving him a solid level of play to improve in, a lot of exposure and seems destined to groom him into a leadership but short term I think Milan with Red Star is better. He seems to have claimed the #1 spot there and the contract is long term, so he'll likely be tip top for the Nations League thing and the next Gold Cup. It's also Red Star, who are the biggest club in Serbia and very popular aboard and constantly in title contention and playing in Europe (this year in the group stage).

Borjan. He becomes a key starter for a big club competing in Europa League. Outside of Atiba he is arguably the most critical CANmnt  player for his club ( considering level, role being played and types of competitions).

thanks for answering him for me

1) Piette - a clear move to a higher level and he has shown he belongs at that level

2) Cavallini - another clear move to a higher level, I rank it lower only because it is not clear yet how he will adapt to the level of play

3) Borjan - it is good he has a stable spot as a starter at a historically big team and will get some European play but from league level a lateral move if not slightly lower than what he was playing at in Bulgaria and Poland and below the level he was playing at in Turkey. The important thing is he is a steady starter and the European play may expose him to larger clubs but on the face of it a less impressive transfer than the other two.

1. Piette. This guy is our future leader, and probably captain material. Learning from Bernier is grooming interest from thousands of kids in Montréal to follow the team.

2. Cavallani. Liga MX is the real deal. Uruguay is good, but playing against the teams I say in the CCL is next level. This guy will get really good if he can stick it out.

3. Adekube. Sweden is dope, and playing against some of their top teams is better than anything we'll be able to throw at him in the interim.

Definitely Piette, it's a major step up to MLS from lots of years playing in France (FC Metz Youth Academy), Germany (Fortuna Düsseldorf II) & in Spain (Deportivo de la Coruna B, Racing Ferrol and CD Izarra)

I say this since he's a major part of our central midfield (Besides Hutchinson,Arfield) and at his age of just 22 he has 37 caps for our national team, he's gonna be part of our future in the long run all the way through 2026

And for home fans, we finally get to see him play week in week out!

I would argue Piette's move was the worst. He had interest in Spain D2 and Belgium and instead picked MLS, presumably because they offered more money and/or term.

Agreed. I'm sure we can have a ton of fun debating this, but I think Piette would have developed better long-term in the Segunda Division than in MLS.

Exactly...

and we all know that it's much easier to go to MLS from Europe than going to Europe from MLS. At age 22, he should have wait longer before going to MLS who would have still welcome him later.

Again it depends where, who were offering, what was being offered. Impact and mls are better than much of Belgium's top flight I'd say.

Also going to Montreal might have involved some personal stuff.

It was said by himself that he didn't have offers in d2 spain, no need to force something that isn't there...Move to Montreal was a good one as he is a starter...Can still go back to europe later on anyway

Initially, but pretty sure there were offers after the GC. UT was speculating where he would land and then others were playing along.

I have serious doubts about how solid that interest was. If he really did have an offer, with better pay, why didn't we hear about it?

My guess is that he was a bit homesick, he left in his teens after all.

Pay probably was a key factor, and i think you were speculating the interest would be from a smaller club based on what he was likely paid by Izarra. I'm not ragging on him for taking the money or having other reasons to move, but from a footballing/career perspective he may have done better staying in Europe. My 2 cents.

I agree, but unless he was going to get 200 grand a year in Europe the move to MLS was good for him on that level as well. At Impact he is making 120k a year, three years, salary going up to 180 the last year, from what I just read online (however inaccurate).

As I speculated, I think he maybe made 3000 euros a month at Izarra, tops, with his apartment paid. So that was another year on a weak team making poor money, or a big move up. And that move was Impact.

MLS being so unforgiving, Saputo and co will probably decide to trade him in the middle of next season and then he'll get teed off enough to make a stronger European move.
