What would you want CPL club names to be like?

I often wondered whether the possibility of calling TFC the Maple Leafs and using the iconic brands from the NHL ever came up at MLSE board meetings. I suspect probably not as the MLS single entity would then have owned 51% of a franchise that could drain merchandise sales out of their main cash cow. For similar sorts of reasons I think cross-marketing is unlikely where CFL owners are concerned as having separate identities is easier from an accounting and future possible sale to new owners standpoint.

As a Habs fan I used to imagine them starting a soccer club, and keeping them in the Canadiens branding. Changing the CH to a CF or CS. (It helps that I think Montreal's jerseys would translate very nicely to a soccer top.)

I dunno about changing the CH because of the history behind it. Also changing the H reminds me of all those Jr C and House league teams that use the C and swap it out with like an A for Ajax or something

Need more options in the poll.

  • Numbers only in Base 8 or binary --- 0101001 vs 1100101
  • Geographic Coordinates FC. ---  41.7325° N, 49.9469° W FC  vs  60°54’59″N, 101°57’0″E FC  (think of the songs!)
  • Mob names - Team is dynamically named by season ticket holders every week with a cell phone app depending on their mood - fuck branding

Hundredth Meridian F.C.
or HMFC for short

Did he share that with a fan group meeting? The Ticats went to the effort of securing the trademark about a year ago:

https://www.ic.gc.ca/app/opic-cipo/trdmrks/srch/viewTrademark?id=1802329&lang=eng&tab=reg

so regardless of how he feels about it, it appears to be in the running. Even if it's not selected, the history of Canadian pro soccer should be remembered:

Vividly remember watching the Steelers in action in Hamilton, Toronto and London and hope to be able to do that again one day:

If there was less of a fixation on the league having to be fully domestic with no MLS B teams I suspect it would have happened by now, but hopefully things will actually get there in the end in a manner that can be stable and sustained, if the powers that be insist that's the way it has to be.

Ahh, you found the picture of the shirt I got made. That was from the company overseas.  Here's the final (same shirt) :

Maybe a company might name the team as a sponsor?  Red Bulls !   Think of the names of any other energy drinks.  Monster etc.  or some brand of beer?

or that happy guy who insists on Viagra brand Viagra.  Imagine his face on the jersey.  Hmm maybe a great sponsor for the future franchise in Niagara Falls.

Only worry is the sponsor may get bored.  The Air Canada franchise is now renamed Scotiabank like what's happening where the hockey team in Toronto plays.

Aww....I thought when you said Mob names it would be something the Toronto Tight Lips, or the Hamilton Dons

Every team should be named for an urban league for my entertainment
-Hamilton Killer in the Backseat FC
-Winnipeg Choking Doberman AFC
-Regina Disappearing Hitchhikers
-Halifax's Polybius Machines
-Toronto Redrooms
FC Edmonton and Ottawa Fury can keep their names but they shouldn't expect to sell any merch

Thanks Maty for keeping 4/8 team names I listed.

What I like: Saskatchewan United, sounds better tbh

What I don't like:

- What's wrong with the Foothills?

- Personally I would hate if the CFL ownership would give the soccer team the same name of "Blue Bombers"

- wanted to make Quebec's name simple so don't see much enphasis in Bleus. Why Toronto? You have the Reds already, support them!

And no you didn't fix my post ✋?

More a joke because every "major" Calgary teams has a violent/actiony name: Stampeders, Flames, Hitmen, Roughnecks

I get that but it would be nice to have a sort of old school Euro style athletic club system.

More Toronto because you can't go too long without a GTA team and the first GTA will have Toronto in the name

''@Matty RE: FYP I kind of like Halifax Town but fear a legal battle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F.C._Halifax_Town'' So what? There's a club in Chile named Everton and another named Arsenal in Argentina! I don't see them coming down there to settle a lawsuit xd

True but there's a difference between launching a team now and launching a team in 1910~ (as is the case with the Chile's Everton) and using Arsenal which is extremely common name worldwide for a soccer club. While Halifax Town might not seem like much it's close enough to possibly cause issue.
