Yes that’s too bad for him. I’m pretty sure he would have seen minutes against Martinique or Haïti but he wasn’t available. Only 32 Canadians got minutes in MLS in 2019. We should also blow past the previous two seasons for minutes played by the end of the season. Great numbers to see. Thinking back to like the mid 2010s we were living and dying on whether Carl Robinson was going to give Teibert minutes and if Kyle Porter was going to keep getting games with DC United. If a Canadian was making the bench on an MLS team at that time that was enough for us to be like "CAP HIM" We've come a long way. Striking while the iron's hot adds to the incremental growth but it doesn't lead to sustainable interest. National team growth in a country where it isn't a top 5 spectator/tv sport means it's an incremental process over a generation assuming the minimum of making WCs for the men and then at least meeting expectations. Moved the conversation to this thread to stop spamming the other one! With the Coaching standards are they aiming to have all coaches down to below teens with licensing? Agree it will be hard to initiate when many younger programs are actively in need of coaches, most of whom likely won't want to take training to do it. I would like to see a Concacaf or Combined CONMEBOL/CONCACAF u21 or u23 tournament like Uefa do, so we aren't so backed into a corner and missing youth or opportunities to promote and test them. We are already seeing unheard of depth and many of these players in the full national team are so young they could lock down these places for a decade. We need players to be able to integrate. It is a good problem to have and I expect our next Olympic Qualifying Mens team to be very strong even if there are CMNT games at the same time again. Still we need a mechanism to help both grow and sustain our depth with an easy transition into the full team. Having an u23/u21 competition or games could be an excellent chance to spread that Canadian team around the CPL grounds for games. Maybe we couldn't financially attend it anyway? Likely it is another fallacy in my head but its like other nations get together or do more at those youth levels. Agree somewhat with the incremental generational progress, the game in this country is only going forward and growing in this country either way. I can't agree we can't speed that up being proactive now and make it sustainable. I couldn't find anything about top 5 sports other than this "questionable" article which has Soccer in the top 5. Even so with the addition and growth of the CPL and maybe D2, certainly more L1/D3 teams, that figure is only rising, even if soccer crowds have been slower returning from lockdown than CFL/Hockey. They also have a tiny historical head start in being embedded. It seems that long game rhetoric makes sense but I think it's an easy out that I think people have been saying 40 years. Even (hopefully) coming out of Covid, if we can't get exposure and sponsorship after the Gold Medal and Mens team arguably at its best with players playing at some of the biggest clubs in the world, we wont ever get it and risk prolonging that generational progress and setting it back further. Maybe its a bit chicken and egg, the nation needs the team to get to the big events but the team needs the nation behind it. I joke about the Go Fund Me page but its not far from the truth, if we actually found a way for soccer players and consumers to mobilize you could force change and quickly. I think in general maybe we as football fans (at least myself) have been too passive with voicing the benefits and love of the game to people that matter. We all have roles to play in demanding more from TV companies, making politicians aware or promoting the game or even encouraging links in local businesses to buy in and support local teams. Fuck I sound like I am going to chain myself to a tree. Here is average Canadian minutes per season from 2016-2020 (5 seasons) by all Canadian MLS teams as well as average Canadian minutes by US based players. MLS will be at 30 teams soon enough and it's likely that there will be 10-15 Canadians in MLS getting significant minutes even if each of the Canadian teams only has 1 or 2 Canadians playing regularly. Having said all that I do think it's great from a financial and cultural perspective when a team is loaded with local talent. That won’t really excuse the Canadian teams though, from a development perspective. They’re the ones with the academies full of Canadian players. We need them to develop those players. It is great that Canadians are breaking into the starting XI for many US based teams, but those are mainly players that are rejected by the Canadian teams or that decided to go the NCAA route. It’s definitely good to have multiple pathways for our players, but it’d be nice to see the academy kids really start to thrive. In a 30 team MLS, I'd like to see something like 75 Canadians playing throughout the league in any given year. We should be looking at 10% of the MLS domestic player pool as a bare minimum, but really looking to out-perform that minimum more often than not. This would be the mid-layer of our overall player pool, sitting below the elite players, who should be in top European leagues, and on top of the true domestic base of players in CanPL and the regional leagues. Metcalfe and then Baldisimo, I believe, were the first real "local backyard" Academy guys who received MLS minutes. All the others came into the organization from elsewhete in Canada. There is no reciprocity, and the CSA doesn't have the gumption to lobby for it. USNT players are more benefitted by Canadian MLS teams than the reverse. How many Canada core players have mostly developed on US MLS teams? MLS is at best a mediocre deal for the CMNT. Our best plan involves direct paths to Europe or dual nationals, with rather few exceptions. CPL isn't there yet either. Labour or contractual reciprocity would be a major step.
