I think national team basketball is much more club over country; the NBA is king.  It’s unfortunate because basketball (IMO) is the #2 most popular sport in the world.
If the European Super League would have happened, I could see them telling FIFA to go away when it came to releasing players for international tournaments.

I agree to an extent but so is the NHL and can you imagine if half our players sat out during the Olympics which is even played mid-season in hockey.  People would rightly go ape shit.  Frankly, I don't think the basketball players are held to account enough for missing repping their country.

Speaking of Olympic Games, the Americans are serious on basketball and they always send their elite players. Because they know a B team won't get the job done. Hopefully Canada has the same mentality and resource available one day.

By the way, a team sport like basketball always has a gel factor in it. I see 5 individuals more than a team on Canada yesterday.

Not much time for Nick Nurse to work on it? Probably.

Thanks, I love these stats.  It's great to see the improvement across the board.

I'm really disappointed with the CB situation.  Was really hoping Cornelius, Dunn, Romeo, Montgomery and Waterman would've had more minutes this year.  Seems only Miller was able to nail a starting CB role.

Thanks for this as always. I was hoping for an update after this round of games, seeing how a number of our guys had strong showings, including Choiniere, Buchanan, Pasher, Ayo and Cavallini all finding the back of the net.

I'm not sure if this is worth it's own thread yet but a random rumour of a possible friendly match between Nigeria B and Canada outside of the FIFA match dates in early October ?!?!

https://dailypost.ng/2021/07/05/nff-plan-ghana-canada-friendly-matches-for-super-eagles/

Who could play in this? CanPL guys and maybe fringe MLS guys vs Nigeria B? To be played in Baltimore. Wild rumour.

Ah yes, finally my two national teams meet.....

Baltimore-DC has a very large Nigerian population, so the location makes sense.

Would love to see this happen, may even make the trip down myself and visit some family at the same time.

@Corazon These are definitely all time highs in terms of players under contract and players playing minutes.  There may have been a couple years with more goals though.  There were a couple seasons where De Rosario and Larin had big seasons and they may have lined up with good seasons with a few other guys.

Its certainly turning out to be a high water mark on a couple fronts though.  Too bad there’s not many CB’s churning out of Canada’s talent factory.

I agree.  I only referenced the past 3 seasons since I have only been keeping track these seasons and because I had that information right in front of me.  Some of those Larin & DeRo years would easily beat anything we have today.  Some of those individual season records might be hard to pass as we see a lot more talent moving overseas from MLS.  We may never get to see prime Larin or prime Tajon or prime Ayo in MLS, if they move overseas before the hit their primes.  It is rare that a player of DeRo's calibre plays most of his career and especially his primes years in MLS.

As someone who follows basketball outside of the NBA, it is my opinion that may only be the case for American players.  For example, there is a tremendous pull for European players to play for their country.  (Doncic's performance for Slovenia yesterday was epic.)  The Eurobasket championships are a BIG deal for the countries that participate in them.

So many Canadian players in the MLS that even I'm shocked at how many of our guys play in that league. Which just goes to show the world that we can compete in the MLS but also showing that any one of our guys could go elsewhere in the world and still compete.

There seems to be a power vacuum emerging in club football with all these European clubs in financial turmoil and MLS just might fill the void by 2023. We might see a situation in a few years where the vast majority of our top guys opt to stay in North America with the exceptions only being if really big clubs coming calling.

I’m not surprised at all remembering the old NASL that had probably a lot more overseas stars play than the MLS has. Yet with all these stars that played in the old NASL we still had a good amount of Canadian players in it. Moreover, some of these Canadians in the old NASL were not bit players but integral players on those teams. Iarusci, Gerry Gray, Lenarduzzi,   Wes McCleod , Bruce Wilson , Branko Segota just to name a few . There was a point were Canadian players in the old NASL were outshining American players it wasn’t even close. Therefore, it does not surprise me that now we are seeing all these Canadian players in the MLS and a few are some of the best in the league, Laryea, Buchanan, Johnson, Osario, Pasher, Kaye, Cavallini not too mention Larin and Alphonso Davies who were already stars in the MLS when they left . To me the Canadians in the MLS are just doing what their predecessors were doing in the old NASL the only difference is the MLS is lasting and growing but unfortunately the old NASL didn’t . Yes it’s not our league run by Americans but in the long run it will benefit Canadian players because there is so much talent here that for so many years had no where to go from the folding of the old NASL to the founding of the MLS. Moreover, with the CPL now here even more players will be discovered , the pathway to success has never looked so bright with Canadian players they just needed places to keep playing and now we have it. The sleeping giant of Canadian talent is finally awakening , the talent was always here I’ve seen it with my own eyes for many years but unfortunately so many quit the game because of nowhere to play but not anymore.

I don't have goals or assist numbers, but I did my best to document the number of Canadians and the number of minutes played in MLS from it's first season (1996) through 2014. I did it by referencing Canadian players listed on some wikipedia page, so I have no idea if I am missing players.

The highs in pre-TFC MLS was 5 players in each of 1996 and 1999. For minutes the high was 9467 in 1996.

From 2007 through 2014 the high for players was 22 players, including players that got 0 minutes, in 2011 and 2013. The most minutes played was 21858 in 2012.

If you are interested in compiling numbers from past seasons I could give you the last names of the players (I didn't even bother with first names because I was more interested in trends in the numbers than anything else) that I've got. Looks like my source for a list of Canadian players has removed Canadians because they aren't "foreign". Maybe there is revision history that could be found. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_foreign_MLS_players

Genuinely asking... has this happened before? Has anyone ever put in a decent Gold Cup showing, and then moved to a top 5 / CL team as a result? I just have trouble imagining these teams getting ecstatic over Larin and Eustaquio dominating Martinique... or even doing decently against a Mexico. They've had a whole season to watch them.

I can buy an Eloy Room type move where he wasn't getting playing time in the first place, but this seems different.

Yeah but if they have great tournaments the interest will only grow and honestly that's what I'm hoping for. Because then not only will those teams be interested but then more club teams will show interest throwing their names into the race for Larin and Eustaquio.

Perhaps not top 5 leagues, but after the 2017 GC several of the CDN players signed with bigger teams: Cav, Borjan and MAK to name a few. I am sure Davies was also scouted heavily during that tournament when he won the golden boot

It is pretty silly from a club perspective to buy a player just based on any tournament.  But it can get you on someone's radar or can show you will step up in a high pressure situation if you have been scouted before.

It's not as common as it was before as teams have been burned time and time again by signing players based off international tournaments. But it definitely can put you on the radar of clubs as was pointed out with Kaye.

I wouldn't expect this tournament to help guys looking to move to top 5 leagues, such as Larin and Eustaquio unless they absolutely smashed it.

Maybe what's different these days is that if a player grabs your eye, you can bring up his stats and video from previous international and league games and get a deeper view of his abilities.  You don't have to judge solely on what you see in the tournament, nor do you have to wait until future matches to see more.  You can probably find out as much as if you were paying attention to him over the past few years.
