Honduras - July 14th Pre-game thread

very tough call.. I feel we gotta start arfield though, we need his presence in this match and I don't think any of our options to replace him give us half of what he brings. Start him and if he's suspended for the QF go with Johnson.

This isn't even a debate for me.

I'd rather lose to Honduras with Arfield and be totally screwed for a match against 1B/1C than lose without Arfield and just be slightly less screwed for a match against 1B/1C when they bring in all the ringers.

Arfield played 90 min on Tuesday and Friday...and now a 3 day turnaround to play Honduras in Texas heat and he has a yellow...

You play him if you are absolutely going all in on Honduras game with the hope to secure a weaker opponent in quarters...otherwise the cons outweigh the pros...

How about we beat the shit out of Honduras so we a. get some ranking points and b. beat the shit out of Honduras

LOL, This!! All this talk of losing 1-0 or getting a draw is bullshit, let's fuck these guys up!

Come on. Did you honestly just say you didn't want to face Martinique because of ranking points? I would gladly play them in the quarters if it meant a way better chance of advancing

If we were to play them in the quarters it would be because they either won their group (and we advanced as a 3rd place finisher along with a team from group A) or they were the runner up in their group (and we won our group). That to me would tell me we wouldn't have a way better chance of advancing, that tells me they have a quality team. It would be great to avoid the Americans, especially since they will get reinforcements for the group stage, but otherwise I don't think an in form Martinique would be all that easy to beat compared to Panama, or whoever finishes as runner up in group C.

And yes, I think it would be a shame if we made a semi-final run and our ranking points effectively remained flat (our ranking points could even go down with a loss to Honduras, win against Martinique, and then a loss in the semi-finals) because this is our last chance to gain significant ranking points before the draw for 2022 World Cup Qualifying. If we would be ranked in the top 6 in CONCACAF we would have an easier route to the hex than if we are 9th or below (assuming the same format as last time). We are currently 10th.

This! For me the Arfield question is more about rest than the yellow. We just might be asking for him to get injured or just plain get exhausted to try to get him to play 270 minutes in 1 week, with the last 2 of those games in Texas heat. Ultimately if I was Zambrano I would probably monitor Arfield to see if he seems ready physically to go again.

A win would be so, so sweet against Honduras. I'm trying to decide which of these three things would make me happiest. Hopefully we can do all three.

a ) Beat Honduras
b ) Shut out Honduras (even if only a 0-0 draw), leaving THEM goalless for the tournament
c ) Eliminate Honduras

This is the OZ era.  We will be playing to win tomorrow I guarantee it! & can you guys believe it!?

Canada can TOP group A! UNREAL!

Also with the FG vs CR game at 7:30 not at the same time as us, what an insane advantage for us to be in the position and know exactly what we need to do to WIN group A.

Provided Mexico does not collapse we wont even face Mexico until the finals if we win the group! That should be the goal.  Winning the group IMO gives us the best shot and run to the final (QF & SEMI vs Martinique, Panama, USA, or a 3rd place team).

I don't expect anything less from the boys or OZ to go out with the intention to not only win but win the group tomorrow. LFG boys! FIRE, PASSION & BELIEF!

Only 2 players who featured in the 8 1 loss for us are in our squad: cavallini and ricketts.

is it just me or is it better to finish 2nd?

You finish 2nd you hopefully play Jamaica in QF not a guarantee but for sure Mexico in Semis. Pick your battles I guess.

I'd rather avoid Mexico as much as possible, although a potential QF against the US isn't appetizing either.

If we win group to not play USA in QF, US just needs to win their group. US also plays after Panama-Martinique so they will know exactly by how many goals they will need to beat Nicaragua to win their group.

I agree USA in QF would be lame once they bring in their much needed reinforcements.  Is what it is.

US would definitely be the favourite on paper but I think we'd have a chance to beat them. Also don't think there is a massive gap between their "A" and "B" teams like some nations..

I don't think we should be thinking ahead to SF. We should do all we can to win the match against Honduras, but secondarily to get the most favorable QF matchup.

Agree on first 2.  The last one, ultimately is a bit out of our control since we are group A and play our games first.

I'm fairly certain OZ will be lining up and playing to win from the start while believing, trusting and motivating his players to do the same. I do not mind whatsoever if that becomes the new Canadian mindset going forward. WIN.

If we win the group and play USA in the QF oh well, is what it is. However, if we win, the winner of Group B plays the 3rd place team from group C. I'm fairly certain Bruce Arena would much rather play Curacao/El Salvador/Jamaica over us in the QF.

Let's smash Honduras, send them home and let's win the group, that's what I want to see Friday.

Sportsbook odds. (bet365 in European Odd Format)

Canada 3.00 - Draw 3.30 - Honduras 2.30

Canada Draw or Win  1.57

I don't know betting odds. Does that mean Honduras are the favourites?
