CPL TV Contract

Then the league is doomed to bleed money for the first several years of the league, and that will keep the Ottawa Fury from joining in the near future.

I'd also like to point out that last year the CBC trademarked "Soccer Night in Canada" and nobody could figure out why, considering TSN and Sportsnet had all the existing soccer rights. Perhaps the CPL plans to give the rights to them for free to build buzz for the product, and allow for negotiations later on?

Have seen it claimed that TSN were going to ditch MLS but changed their minds due to the very high ratings for last years playoffs, so maybe CBC were going to get the rights instead at one point? The SNIC thing was only showing in MLS related stories, so definitely appeared to be geared towards future MLS coverage.

Don't agree that a lower budget CPL compared to USL and the NASL (which is why I suspect Edmonton and Ottawa will steer clear initially, as they'll probably want to see what unfolds in year one before burning any bridges as the launch of a new sports league is inherently high risk) is doomed to fail. The 86ers more or less balanced the books on crowds of 3500-4000 in the original CSL despite lots of air travel and fielded a team that was well worth watching. The problem was that most of the rest of the league didn't come close on either of those things. Canadian soccer has moved on since then and the three MLS academies are going to be churning out lots of pro level players that don't quite make the grade in MLS that will be looking for a place to play in the years ahead. I'm cautiously optimistic that PB knows what he is doing at this point as I find myself agreeing with pretty much everything he says in these podcast interviews.

Every year with reduced revenues from cable subscribers will eventually push a publicly shared company to make a change even if they can milk a smaller and smaller amount of money out of locked in customers for 20-30 years.

Currently only 15% of houses are streaming only (in fact the trend is slowing down in the us according ro some researchers) and in homes that both watch tv and stream tv watching is done about 5 times as much. On top of that in nations with large rural populations tv viewership has remained mostly level. Fuck raido out does streaming by a wide margin. The death of traditional media is well over a decade away, likely 2 or 3.

Nothing CPL specific in here but found it interesting nonetheless...

That is an interesting article - not just because it provides more info on a growing streaming platform (that doesn't involve porn pop-ups and virus alerts), but because DAZN:

- already supports J league, which is a solid but not amazing domestic league; and

- apparently plans expansion into Canada, where acquiring quality domestic sports products may be a necessary part of the equation (which could be a precondition if CRTC regulates it and demands a certain level of CANCON)

^. Not going to lie,. I like the way that article reads but picture quality is the deal breaker for me.  Took a punt on an Android box over the winter and had too hard a time trying to get high quality feeds.  Bit spoiled I guess.  But I'll settle for what I can get if options are limited and it's a league/team I'm invested in, like CanPL when it launches for example.

Those android boxes often stream from pirated sites - with the kind of picture quality and lag that entails.  If this guy is talking about charging $11-15 per month, the cost is on par with Netflix, so I would expect a pretty slick presentation for programs they have the rights for.  Not to say it will be 4k of anything - and it would always be subject to the user's bandwidth - but I suspect this would be light years ahead of the pixelated streams you get on the unauthorized streaming sites.

That DAZN article above was interesting, thanks for sharing. I see their parent company is Perform Group, I recognize that name, that's the guys that operate Goal.com.

They were also contracted to operate the NASL Live app and streaming platform for the 2014 season, I believe. I think it was $20/year for unlimited access to all NASL matches, I had it and liked it myself, but I remember there was some big issue mid-season, and NASL ended up ending its partnership with them.

Sounds like something that can compete with beINsports and Sportsnet World. And I saw just last week that Sportsnet will be merging all their Sportsnet World Now stuff into Sportsnet Now. Fun times with this digital sports streaming world. And agreed on Kodi, I have it on my Galaxy tablet, it's not very good for live sports, it's just streams from atdhe and first row sports.

And wow, the owner of DAZN is the richest man in UK? Jesus.

Just from a quick wikipedia research, so the richest man in UK, Len Blavatnik, owns Access Industries, which owns Perform Group, which operates DAZN.

This sports streaming stuff is such a small piece of the pie for him, I'm going to guess we'll be hearing about DAZN as a major competitor to beIN pretty soon or something, I guess. Though I mean, beIN is a plaything of the Qatari royal family, so that's no slouch there either lol.

Had to look this service up. Sounds pretty cool despite a lot of mixed reviews on Google Play, curious what content it would have in Canada.

BTW: What are everyone's thoughts on someone that seems to be a TLN rep promoting the ICC on here?

I hope TLN does not get it unless they also offer a streaming service that makes the league available to people who do not want cable.

I think DAZN should grab the rights to CPL and give them $10 Million (grabbing numbers out of thin air) for the first year.

Edit: Misread the TLN comment. My opinion on TLN and CPL still the same.

Access >>>> $$$$

Even if they are giving it away for peanuts, they need to be visible. I think channels would be willing to broadcast but not for an unrealistic price tag and cost of production is huge here as well.

If the league financial health isn't linked to a TV contract as they claim, giving it away for cheap to CBC the first few year to build a track record to sell at a higher price later to bigger sports channels is the smart way to go.

I found this article better https://www.thestar.com/sports/football/2017/07/20/dazn-sports-streaming-service-launches-in-canada-with-nfl-as-its-first-attraction.html

Will be interesting to see where this goes when it comes to Canadian content.

so other than NFL what do they have in Canada?..

I'm betting on more fringey stuff like NBLC and more Canadiana like curling, winter sports and maybe minor, women's and junior hockey. Have a feeling they're try to secure a ton of tennis (ATP 250 and WTA 125k could use it), rugby and MMA.

for the CBC article

"Canada's offerings are unlikely to be quite so lavish, given Rogers's iron grip on NHL rights through 2026. Rice said the London-based company targeted Canada for its first North American foray because it has the right mix of sports fandom coupled with broadband and wireless internet connectivity. "We look at Canada as potentially unlocking a whole other market," Rice said."

Building a network around the NFL, ATP, WTA and curling in Canada would likely be a hit.

Also the German/Austrian versions have Brasilian soccer, Copa Libertadores and other leagues all live and on demand games.

I really hope they get Liga MX!

Sounds like DAZN is going to crush beIN

from the release abov

Following the news announced today, DAZN will be the only place Canadians can access NFL Game Pass, which includes every live NFL game of the 2017 season – pre-season, regular season, the playoffs and the Super Bowl. As the new home of NFL Game Pass, which includes all Sunday games previously offered in NFL Sunday Ticket, and NFL RedZone, DAZN will have both live and on-demand NFL coverage with no blackouts meaning fans will never have to miss another epic touchdown, field goal or interception.

DAZN will also provide access to other sports from top leagues and competitions around the world. Monthly and annual packages will be available. Sports fans will be able to subscribe for $20 CAD a month or annually for the limited introductory price of $150 CAD. In addition, all subscribers will get 30 days free.

NFL already will put it ahead of beIN in terms of eyeballs here. The extras might just kill beIN

Sorry dude...you advocating for putting it on TLN already makes me suspect your judgement on these things.

Just joking..sort of...but look imo sports casuals eyeballs matter more for the TV aspect...not the streaming aspect. Whats the crossover of NFL fans and CanPL...on a streaming service? low in my opinion. At least with BeIN you have a bunch of other major soccer leagues. And if we were looking for eyeballs from casuals Sportsnet Now would blow all of them out of the water as they have NHL + Jays + occasionally raptors + EPL...etc
