The 86ers more or less balanced the books on crowds of 3500-4000 in the original CSL despite lots of air travel and fielded a team that was well worth watching. The problem was that most of the rest of the league didn't come close on either of those things. Canadian soccer has moved on since then and the three MLS academies are going to be churning out lots of pro level players that don't quite make the grade in MLS that will be looking for a place to play in the years ahead. I'm cautiously optimistic that PB knows what he is doing at this point as I find myself agreeing with pretty much everything he says in these podcast interviews. Took a punt on an Android box over the winter and had too hard a time trying to get high quality feeds. Bit spoiled I guess. If this guy is talking about charging $11-15 per month, the cost is on par with Netflix, so I would expect a pretty slick presentation for programs they have the rights for. Not to say it will be 4k of anything - and it would always be subject to the user's bandwidth - but I suspect this would be light years ahead of the pixelated streams you get on the unauthorized streaming sites. I see their parent company is Perform Group, I recognize that name, that's the guys that operate Goal.com. They were also contracted to operate the NASL Live app and streaming platform for the 2014 season, I believe. I think it was $20/year for unlimited access to all NASL matches, I had it and liked it myself, but I remember there was some big issue mid-season, and NASL ended up ending its partnership with them. Sounds like something that can compete with beINsports and Sportsnet World. And I saw just last week that Sportsnet will be merging all their Sportsnet World Now stuff into Sportsnet Now. Fun times with this digital sports streaming world. Just from a quick wikipedia research, so the richest man in UK, Len Blavatnik, owns Access Industries, which owns Perform Group, which operates DAZN. This sports streaming stuff is such a small piece of the pie for him, I'm going to guess we'll be hearing about DAZN as a major competitor to beIN pretty soon or something, I guess. I think channels would be willing to broadcast but not for an unrealistic price tag and cost of production is huge here as well. If the league financial health isn't linked to a TV contract as they claim, giving it away for cheap to CBC the first few year to build a track record to sell at a higher price later to bigger sports channels is the smart way to go. Just joking..sort of...but look imo sports casuals eyeballs matter more for the TV aspect...not the streaming aspect. Whats the crossover of NFL fans and CanPL...on a streaming service? low in my opinion. At least with BeIN you have a bunch of other major soccer leagues.
