Stephen Eustaquio

Recommended Posts

Wow... Steph really showed his versatility today. That might be the best I've ever seen him play defensively. He can really stay behind and turn into a brick wall when he wants to. Must've had near 100% pass completion too.

He wasn't flashy or anything, so I don't think he'll get any new suitors, but definitely a sign that he can play a very specific role when he needs to.

Was coming home from the village, turned on the radio, and Radio Marca had the game as their national feature match in Spain, calling the play by play--then pausing for stints to deal with other stuff, signings, other results, previews of tomorrow...etc. But it was great to hear them explain who Stephan was, he'd played in Gold Cup with Canada. Then as Paços (by the way, the pronounciation is "passhos", half s and a bit of sh) looked like they were going to hang on, the commentators started praising Stephan and his midfield partner for blocking all Spurs attempts through the middle and forcing them wide where they were predictable, the exact comment.

I've never heard so many fans talk about Canadians either, a friend of my kid came over recently and he knew Davies, David the guys at Besiktas, was asking questions about Canada, and he's a casual fan. My barber, who's French and a Real Madrid fan, the same. Proud it's happening.

I hope your urologist (or the doctor that you'd ask if you wanted a Viagra prescription) knows that Benito Floro used to be our coach.

"¡Con el pito nos los follamos!"

¡Con el pito!

Edit: Yes Floro's speech was vulgar, and has aged very poorly, but I thought it made for a half-decent joke. Apparently @Unnamed Trialist has a very different sense of humour from @shermanator.

Random aside, imagine Floro coaching a woman's team? What kind if locker-room speech would he give? That could be a disaster. :D

I think the phrase means you do things they way they are supposed to be done, with the correct tools. If you listen to him, it was vulgar and pretty pathetic.

Floro was about to be fired, they were screwing up a match at Lleida at the half, a team who have not been in top flight since that season. And eventually lost, and immediately he was canned. Some say his hysterics in the dressing room put players off so much they forced the club president's hand.

I met him at Oliva near Valencia in the hotel before our first match with him, our Mauritania friendly. That hotel just let us into the private players lounge, no controls at all (my kid was wearing a Team Canada hockey shirt, I think that is what got us past the security). He was very nice, watching the F1 race end; I suppose I still have a pic somewhere.

Objectively, his career as a coach was full of firings and failures. I don't miss those days at all.

This made me happy today:

"Spurs did not manage a single shot on target - but Nuno said he did not underestimate the hosts and would pick the same team again.

...

Their European campaign - in the new third-tier tournament - will be over in August unless they win next Thursday's second leg at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium."

Excellent chance Pacos do go through then as Nuno seems happy to use this as a run-out for the kids. I image he'll at least put someone like Dele on the bench for the return, but that group isn't suddenly going to develop cohesion. An organised Pacos should manage it. Hopefully it's less of a sloppy mess, though, so Eustaquio can stand out a bit more.

Eustaquio and Pacos to get by Spurs.

They will then make a run to the final of the inaugural UEFA Conference league, where they'll meet Millar and FC Basel.

Winner gets a guaranteed spot on the Canada squad for WC 2022 :)

I was reading the comments from this article.  The first one was. " I saw this result and, probably like you, I hadn't heard of the team so I googled them.  Apparently they play in North London."

Man I busted a gut.  Fans from all the other London teams are really enjoying the Spurs loss.

That's what's so great about general chats and forums on football in England, no fan group is majority and you can't get away with anything. For example Guardian comments after major matches.

Now other topics, like Lewis Hamilton, censored to the hilt.

Looks like Eustaquio was once again awarded the "Player of the Game" for Pacos vs Tottenham.  Have to think that a few clubs were watching that game and hopefully were impressed.

Every game is showing more and more that he is above this level.

Pacos' president actually made a comment after the game, saying "Portuguese football is sleeping" on Steph. That's the first time I've heard him speak in terms of selling Eustaquio, but it also makes me wonder whether there was ever any real interest in him to begin with.

I'm starting to think Pacos invested more than they could afford, thinking they would be able to flip him quickly. There haven't been any offers and they're getting worried. It sounds insane considering how good he's been, but maybe the interest just isn't there for whatever reason? I guess he wasn't great for the second half of last season but his quality is so obvious. I dunno.
