CPL General

Its one of the hidden benefits of the CPL, and in the long run the CSB.  Jobs and fertile training ground for everyone involved in the "soccer industry".  Refs, physio, team support staff, managers, front office staff, players agents etc etc all down the line.  And not just in the big metro areas (MLS), but Halifax, Hamilton, WPG, Calgary etc.  It would be a shame to see this horseshit going on now tear down everything that's been built.

Good thing to remember is that this year marks the first year that the CPL regular season champion andthe  North Star champion will qualify for the 2024 Concacaf Champions League. Which is the first of the new iteration.

And if a team wins both, the 2nd place regular season team will take the spot (or if the 1st or 2nd place regular season team wins the Voyageurs Cup, the final spot will go to the 3rd place CPL regular season team, as I understand it from wikipedia).

Playoffs seem to be a rather sore topic for anything football-related, but I rather like this format.

The biggest issue with an 8 team league with no pro/rel imo is keeping games competitive and entertaining until the end. In European tiers, you see bottom dwellers fighting to stay promoted, top teams fighting for champions league, europa league and conference league.

This format, gives different value to seeds 1/2,3 and 4/5. Plus, it gives a greater advantage for those 1st / 2nd place teams that have a great regular season. Also, four different teams being guaranteed a hosted playoff game (and one with huge odds) should be a great selling feature in local markets.

The top 4 were well ahead of the pack, and only 3 points separated them. With this format Valour would have been a playoff team last season, with a record below .500. Why is this change needed?

That's exactly why this is needed. We don't want the bottom four teams having absolutely nothing to play for in their last ten games. Gives more teams, more competitive games while at the same time giving a much greater benefit to the better performing teams.

Valour would've needed to win four straight away games to win the title, whereas Forge only would've needed to win 2 games + have a second chance if they lose the first.

Edit: for further reference, the season prior saw the 4th through 6th teams separated by 1 point.

I like that there is another way for 1st and 2nd and that it isn't just one loss and they're done.  That is smart and rewarding.  However five teams out of eight making it is ridiculous and discredits the whole season.

Every game is supposed to count.  By giving them a second chance because they were only separated by one point just means that it doesn't matter.

Honest question: why don't they just let every team into the playoffs?

In 2021 and 2022, 7th and 8th had nothing to play for at the end and were far from even 5th place

In 2021, teams 4th 5th and 6th fought for the last spot until the end

In 2022, 5th and 6th were out of it

With this new format there is the possibility of a cinderella story but at the same time you are rewarding a team that had a simply bad record

except it does because then you need to win another match to get into the finals? when the 5-8th teams were out of the playoffs with weeks left in the season, now those games actually counted for nothing.

if you let every team into the playoffs, the regular season games have no stakes besides seeding.
