I think it's ridiculous that many of these sports leagues are even considering resuming or beginning their schedules any time soon, I'm not a health specialist, although I did work at a hospital, this is going to take some time to clear up enough for sports leagues, with or without fans to safely start playing their games!

Because people who have been locked in their house for 3 weeks have a better read on things then a billion dollar industry with ties to government at every level. Billions of dollars to loose in liability cases and direct contact with the best medical minds in one of the most sophisticated countries in the world. Sure they're just willy nilly out their making decisions but people who have zero clue know what's best. Sure thing

Germany and England are both looking at empty, spectator-less stadiums.  Talk of having every participant tested prior to match.  There's only 9 games left in the English Championship, and relegation and promotion are on the line.  Lots of clubs still in the mix (sorry, no QPR).  The same situation for Premier.  I hope they pull it off.  The season needs a conclusion and TV ratings would be solid.   But you are correct, it will not be easy, lots of factors at play.  Particularly in the UK, who are really taking it hard at the moment.  Hopefully this is, or close to the peak.

If you read my first 2 words you will see it was just my opinion, apparently you don't agree which is fine, time will tell how this unfolds!

QPR were playing some great football and mathematically in the mix for the play offs, one of their fans involved with video promotion died of the virus this week, he was 28, maybe puts some perspective as to where they are at!

If you dont think that's fine but to call it "Ridiculous". There isn't a single fact, real data or evidence that would suggest that it is ridiculous to "plan" to play soccer games in an empty stadium 1 month from now in Germany or Canada. And to suggest that the Bundesliga wouldnt comply or have access to people with Germany's best interest and the most sophisticated medical information possible. That to me is what sounds "ridiculous". We will see how it unfolds. Let's check back on May 1st

They could be making decisions based on 13 of the 36 Bundesliga teams facing insolvency if the leagues don't restart by May.  Let's not discount that as a factor in their possible decision making.

Spain and Italy definitely appear to be past the peak now and following a symmetrical sort of downward trajectory rather than going through Iran's long plateau. When it gets under control with South Korean levels of testing in place I suspect a lot of governments will be keen for the main TV sports leagues to get going again in empty stadiums for bread and circuses sort of reasons. The economics of that will only work for leagues where TV money is more important than gameday revenues, so more the CFL and NHL than CanPL.

We also have to consider Canada is larger than the entire Continent of Europe with roughly 4% the population. How many flights and trains a day between Vancouver and Calgary, Vancouver and Winnipeg?  2 or 3 .How many flights and trains a day between London and Paris.. maybe 100s. Point being, everywhere is different

I broke it down for you guys ***
CPL Commissioner Clanachan interview
CPL working on different scenarios and schedules to restart the league
  • Single table allows for mor flexibility. Ultimately have to follow governments guidelines.
  • Not a fan of playing in pty stadiums and hard to pull off economically but didn't close the door on that option
  • Some within CPL staff are pushing to have the league being the 1st league to restart in Canada to have all of the attention but Commissioner reiterates it has to be safe to all staff and players. Risk has to be worth it...not at this time
  • Says that not being a cross-border league and being smaller is an advantage in term of potentially making it feasible to restart due to less complicated logistics

-Expansion not affected by COVID 19, still talking to potential owners. His focus is on Quebec, the Prairies, Ontario and the East (Atlantic Canada)

-Pacific : Hydro Pole - They asked the city, province and BC Hydro to move the Hydro Pole to fix the camera angle for the stadium which proved problematic. Otherwise, the league might draw a line and moving the club might be on the table.

-Cavalry : Larson sees that club as leading the league in CPL 2.0 - Commissioner says that the owner, Southern family are willing to spend on the club and  owns lots of land. The club is very ambitious about where it wants to be on and off the pitch. They will go as far as their ownership are willing to go.

-FC Edmonton : The stadium is subpar - Not all cities are stepping up like Langford BC. Says the stadium needs work and the foundation is good to expand upon but seems like attendance will have to go up first before seeing big infrastructure improvements

-Valour : Winnipeg had great attendance, how to grow it - Comes down to results, Valour will have to do better on the pitch to have more fans. Clanachan want 8k to 10k in CFL stadiums, says it will take time for clubs to get there.

-HFX Wanderers : Is Halifax the blueprint for future expansion - Now says that 400k to 500k metro area is the sweet spot, work off the pitch was well done to the point that downtown Halifax is CPL territory, everything is about the Wanderers.
  • Reminds that after the big Euro leagues, the average attendance is around 10k, that's CPL goal to be just like most Euro leagues in attendance
-York9 : Is a new venue the answer (using Kansas City new stadium to turn things around) - The new club president will bring changes with his background on business and sports.
  • The club improved on connecting with the community.
  • The commissioner thinks that they should succeed at York Lions Stadium before building a Soccer stadium in Vaughan.
  • York Lions can succeed of the club do it right off the pitch. (Pointing out to that home game against Montreal)
  • Stadium in Vaughan should be done only after exceeding capacity in North York becomes a necessity
-Forge : Can Forge go to the next level, 8 to 10k - Have to solidify their work in the community and soccer community in the area. The club is now doing more with engaging fans, they have to keep doing it. Building a brand is not only on the pitch.

-North American : Garber had mentioned that it was a missed opportunity to not work with CPL - Commissioner feels that CPL has to focus on building up. New Liga MX players coming to CPL could be a beginning to involve CPL with other partners in the region but it starts with potentially building a relationship with MLS when the time is right.
  • Prefers talking cooperation over confrontation, our region is playing catch up to the rest of the world, we're all in this together and we're learning from one another.
-Academies? Says that North America has a real problem with academies and have not proven to work.
  • The rational of the league for not going that route is that only 2.9% of the ~600 players developped by MLS academies saw first team real minutes. CPL is looking at other models that would yield better returns.
  • Points out that between 40 to 50 players in CPL inaugural year has played in England League One.
  • Montreal owner Joey Saputo said that he was losing money on Montreal Impact academy but making money on Bologna academy side. Academies has to be done right, not just having them just for the sake of having them
  • Gave the example of Brentford in Championship who's close to promote to Premier League. They stop having academies as they would develop players but couldn't hold on to them since bigger clubs came knocking after doing the heavy lifting of developing them.
  • Investments must be focused on the technical development side of the game first so they can develop players here at home first before investing massively in academies that may lack the expertise to develop them properly leading to wasting talents.
Designated Players : Not on the league's radar atbthis time.
  • He views those brought in the old NASL and MLS as "Mercenaries already looking for the next job" and that didn't work out until David Beckham joined MLS and it worked.
  • Worries about bringing internationals who just wants to finish their career (last paycheck) or those just looking for the next club as soon as they arrived
  • Says that the league has to be strategic on what kind of internationals are signed in this league, he prefers signing young talent wanting play lots of minutes in Canada and on the upside of their careers coming from academies with great pedigree
  • Having older players is nice but you need the right coaching and technical staff to coach them.

"The economics of that will only work for leagues where TV money is more important than gameday revenues, so more the CFL and NHL than CanPL."     Isnt the media pro deal pretty important to the finances of the league??  They have to be dying for content, even if its empty stadiums in canada.

This is maybe the best indication yet that the media pro deal isn't as much *cash* as people think it is.  We know roughly the league salary cap is what...I think $700k last I saw?.  They obviously have other expenses.  But if it's no paid attendance that prevents the league from restarting, then I think it's clear that the mediapro deal is a lot more "service" than some people think.

Salary cap was $750K for 2019 and its either the same or increased to $800K for 2020 apparently (there's been talk its increased 50K but didn't see anything official).

Thought: With the Tokyo Olympics postponed to 2021 and most other major sporting events cancelled/postponed, it would seem to me that the CBC has lost a lot of its intended summer sports programming. If the CPL can get things moving again (sometime in July, I would hope), I wonder if this would create an opportunity to expand the relationship with CBC. The network fills some of its empty slots (possibly a lot, depending on if they'd have an interest in picking up any of the One Soccer original programming), and the CPL gets a ton of exposure. Win-win!

I’m hearing that some of the European leagues are eyeing May as a possibility for playing their remaining fixtures. I’m also hearing that the US is considering lightening restrictions (possibly not for everyone, but maybe for segments of the population) in May also. Hopefully that means that we might be able to do likewise.

Pretty sure David Beckham was the first DP in MLS history so not sure who he was talking about beforehand. The notion of starting the season will be dictated by the Virus and when governments left some restrictions, not before in anyway. The MLB notion of starting the season using the spring training stadiums in Phoenix is drawing a lot criticism. Trying to push the envelope is not the way to go.

Mediapro also will have greatly lowered expenses when the league isn't operating given their main expense will be the live broadcast costs for each game, so if they aren't on the hook for a large rights fee and the deal was mainly about picking up the tab for something that would have had to be done in house otherwise there's no obvious reason to be in a rush to return to playing from their standpoint.

...

I guess that depends who you ask and what they're guestimating the cash valvue to the individual clubs is.

The margins have to be impossibly small in this league.  Valour has to have one of the best game day gates in the league and on an average day it's what?  $125K - $150K?  Peanuts, even if you do have some additional related revenues.  Still can't afford to lose that revenue though.  Doesn't matter what outside revenue you're bringing in and from where.

If Valour's budget is $3M (and we're going to know very soon what it is) they simply cannot take a $600K loss of revenue by having their 1st 4 dates in a closed building.  Can't do it.

The CFL has pushed back it's kickoff until at least July.  I'm not sure why CPL would be much different.

Because half their players are probably in the US right now. Maybe they'll consider filling out the roster with USport players

And it's a sport that needs like 50 players on a single roster. Probably like 100 people just to execute a preseason practice

The best case scenario the more I think is a big stadium for CPL. You could create zones. Field zone for players 1 coach, medical, & officials. An upper ring or zone that never interacts with the other zone,  assistant coachs, cameras, production etc. You could even segregate all the substitutes and lay down turf in another part of the stadium and only call on them when needed. BC place now has a hotel adjoining the stadium. Players wouldn't even have to interact with anyone. Teams could rotate in for warmup or practice if needed. It could be done

And there's more than enough time to get those players up from the US and isolate them for 2 weeks before the start of their original schedule, but they've still pushed it back.

BC Place is owned by the province.  I'm not at all sure they're eager to open up BC Place for an event.

I know you want the CPL to start, but given what the health authorities keep repeatedly saying I'm not at all sure how you think they'll be able to get things going for May.  Latest seems to be that they're now expecting a new surge in cases in 2 weeks thanks to all the people who decided to travel during the long weekend.
