Just chiming in on the rivalry piece. I think we all know that the rivalries that are being discussed will form over time. My only issue is the league Trademarking the names. That's foolishness, especially when the rivalries should be springing up organically and be spurred on by the supporters of the clubs, not the league.

By trademarking rivalry names, the league tarnishes the authenticity of the rivalry IMO. The sad thing is they don't need to, because these rivalries were going to happen anyway.

Yup, that is totally a fair comment. Reminds me of when MLS trademarked "Cascadia Cup" and the debacle that followed.

Speaking of which, shouldn't Pacific FC be invited to join the Cascadia Cup? That is of course if it is still a supporters initiated competition....

unless they create a friendly tourney, no. it would be very difficult to organize a cup where 3 of the teams have zero competitive matches unless they qualify for ccl.

bored list

Best Song from each CPL City/Region
Vancouver Island: "I'm Like a Bird" - pretty much a perfect early 2000s pop song
Edmonton: "Chamber of Reflection" - the most hipster song to ever come out of Canada maybe. Easiest Mac song to chill to. Great video.
Calgary: "Working for the Weekend" - 100% an anthem. 80s Canadian pop metal at its finest and most accessible. Epic chorus.
Winnipeg: "Rockin' in the Free World" - Neil at peak rock and political mode featuring some of his simplest but most hard-hitting lyrics. It's not a stretch to say grunge rock's success owes a lot to this song.
Hamilton: "John Lennon" - probably the funniest Canadian indie track in the later half of the oughts. A solid afternoon song.
York Region: "The Maple Leaf Forever" - Canadian classic. The crop from York was thin so it was this or "White Trashing".
Halifax: "Underwhelmed" - Probably the best of the CanRock songs that dominated alternative radio in the 90s. Without this song, it's hard to imagine the 2000s Canadian indie boom/75% of Polaris nominees.

Good one, but how about taking it all a step further for us dummies: best local bands right now from each of the club locations?

Or an only Indie list?

Would you believe that the go-to song over the loudspeakers this year, before matches, at Camp Nou, is "Sweet Child of Mind"?

can't say for local but if we just go like popular indie. locals please give some local buzz bands worth noting i want more canadian music from outside the major bubbles of toronto, montreal and vancouver.

victoria: Frog Eyes - their song "2 girls" is a pretty intense listen, that entire 2015 album they did is good. would like to explore their catalog more
edmonton: Mac DeMarco - canadian indie super star. can be hit or miss but more often hits
calgary: Preoccupations - moody post punks with a trio of solid releases each better than the last which is a shock given the genre they're playing
winnipeg: Propagandhi - they're a solid punk band with a 20 year history and 10 albums almost all seen as upper level modern punk
hamilton: Junior Boys - check out big black coat, it's a pretty key album in the new dark synthwave scene. early stuff is kind of meh but recent stuff is solid
york: Nicole Dollanganger - natural born loser is a pretty great album. stuff is a little darker, lots of disturbing lyrics (almost cartoonishly so). despite being a slower act metal and rapheads dig her
halifax: Jeremy Dutcher - from new brunswick but got his higher musical education at dalhousie. making this interesting mix of first nations music and classical. it can be a little dull but he's onto something and has an amazing voice.

MLS made the decision to move away from player development to try to become one of the top leagues in the world years ago.  Most major decisions made by the league since David Beckham have been to elevate the product on the field in order to make as much money as possible.

Some of these moves have been

- continual increase of the salary cap

- expansion of the designated player from 0 to 1 to 2 to now 3 spots

- introduction of Targeted Allocation Money

While this has been fantastic for MLS in terms of growth on the world stage, it has been a great detriment to the USMNT.

The CPL's rule requiring teams to have 6 Canadians on the field is the strongest move that the league has made to ensure this doesn't happen to the CMNT.

How many of the players signed so far do you expect to be called up to play in the Gold Cup this summer (assuming all goes well on qualifying)? CanPL is more about adding greater depth that will help on the fringes than something that will be in any way pivotal to the core of the CMNT roster any time soon. In general, I think people are making too much out of one disappointing qualification cycle for the USMNT and are conveniently ignoring the great strides that have been made on academy systems by MLS teams over the past decade or so since the Beckham signing. Where would CanPL be without the castoffs from the TFC, Whitecaps and Impact academy systems? MLS has been the engine of growth for Canadian soccer that has made a league like CanPL credible to enough would be investors for it to finally actually happen.

The decision to turn MLS into a potential league capable of competing worldwide is not the problem. Not having a proper strong D2 requiring US heavy roster is where it will hurt them the most.

I had posted that Atlantic article stating that the gap between MLS and USL was growing and with no pro/rel and on this trajectory, MLS may become to big of a step for lots of American to jump from... which will lower the depth of their pool long term.

CPL surpassing USL and managing that gap with MLS to be competitive in the region and finding ways to build a strong D2 in the future is key in my opinion

Relax... obviously we're talking long term here.

 Preseason

  • Following a month of training in their respective cities, each of the seven clubs will continue their preparations in the Dominican Republic, beginning April 5, 2019, where coaches and players will participate in a number of on and off-the-pitch sessions. The CPL is working towards finalizing friendly matches with local professional clubs in the Dominican Republic and other parts of the Caribbean.
  • MEDIAPRO, the CPL’s official media partner, will be in attendance to capture media assets in preparation for their production of all 98 regular season matches.

New Sponsors

  • The Canadian Premier League also announced Monday that Nike will be the official footwear and equipment supplier for the CPL’s seven founding clubs. This partnership, negotiated by Canadian Soccer Business (CSB) on behalf of the CPL, will have players wearing Nike performance football boots.
  • The Nike Merlin will also be the official match ball of the 2019 season

Not sure how well that will go down with the players. Some people can be quite particular on preferred brands when it comes to football boots.

It will go down just nicely with a slice of humble pie.

The only issue is if players have pre-exisiting sponsorship deals with other manufacturers. I am not sure whether they would go through their specific club first anyway?
