Some info on why Calgary Foothills chose to go the UWS route.

http://www.foothillsfc.ca/default.asp?id=match-review-vs-real-salt-lake-women&l=1

United Women’s Soccer (UWS) was formed late in 2015. The charter members of UWS felt there was a gap in the development of the female soccer player between the collegiate game and the professional and/or international game. Currently, here in Alberta, the highest level of soccer available is the Alberta Major Soccer League under the Alberta Soccer Association. Our club will continue to participate in this league; however, with the league running May-September and potential National Championship in October there is a direct, well-documented conflict with USPORT and/or NCAA programs. The UWS season does not conflict with USPORT and/or NCAA and as such provides a much-needed alternative and high-performance development pathway for our collegiate player or those seeking further development with such high standard opposition.

[ 1 ]  Passage previewing Foothill's home opener from the uwssoccer.com  website:

SATURDAY, JUNE 10

Calgary Foothills Women’s FC vs. Santa Clarita Blue Heat
6:00 PM MDT - Calgary Soccer Centre (Calgary, AB)

Saturday will be a big day for the Calgary soccer scene as not only do the Foothills Women’s FC side have their 2017 home opener at Calgary Soccer Centre, they host the defending UWS champion Santa Clarita Blue Heat. On top of that, fans will get to see the future of Canadian women’s soccer take on a former international who will be recognized for her efforts with the national team. Defender Lauren Sesselmann has started both games for the Blue Heat (2-0 West) this season and after Saturday’s game vs. Calgary, she will be honored alongside Josee Belanger, Jonelle Filigno, Robyn Gayle and Kaylyn Kyle at Sunday’s CWNT match in Toronto.

Sesselmann will take on Calgary and their three players with Canadian National Team experience in the youthful threesome of midfielder Mya Jones, midfielder Sarah Kinzner and defender Melissa Roy. All three players have seen time in the Canada Youth National Team setup at the U-15, U-17 and U-20 levels. Kinzner and Roy were part of the CFWFC side who were victorious last weekend in Houston, defeating the Aces by a 2-1 score. The visiting Canadian internationals were a goal better than the five Colombian internationals who are part of the Houston roster. Two goals from forward Joelle Gosselin got the first-ever victory for Calgary and they will now look to topple the defending UWS champions.

Last Sunday in a much anticipated rematch of the top two West Conference sides from the 2016 season, Santa Clarita won the rematch vs. Real Salt Lake by a tight 1-0 score. In front of a record home crowd of 800+ fans at The Master’s University, Blue Heat veteran Kodi Lavrusky notched the lone goal of the match in the 56th minute while goalkeeper Jojo McCaskill would get the shutout in goal (three saves). Florida State University star & Venezuelan international Deyna Castellanos put her stamp on the match in the second half, firing off a pair of quality scoring chances while assisting on Lavrusky’s game-winner.

[ 3 ] Notes

-  it's a busy weekend for Lauren Sesselmann ; she plays a match   with Santa Clarita in Calgary on Saturday and then on Sunay, she'll be  at the CANWNT friendly vs Costa Rica in Toronto to be honoured ( with other players)  for her past service for the CANWNT..

-  Deyna Castellanos , the FSU star and Venezuelan sensation, is playing with Santa Clarita and she likes to score against Canadians! She scored against U17 CANWNT  twice in two different U17 WWC tournaments:

I never liked that Sesselmann's last "moment" with the CWNT was that blunder against England in the World Cup.  She was an important part of the team for years, enjoying many successes.  I'm glad that she's getting a new last moment that will be pleasant to remember for all.

I disagree, I hope Sesselmann plays terribly tonight. She hasn't been with the national team since the WWC game against England, and now she plays for the enemy.

As well her business partner didn't take too kindly to some banter we gave her a few months ago, so we have to tiptoe around her tonight.

[ 1 ] HT    Foothills WFC 0 - 1 Santa Clarita Blue Heat

-  22'  Lauren Sesselmann  - yellow card

-  Stream has no sound. Scoring graphic not updated . Still reads 0 - 0

- Foothills catch a break. No Deyna Castellanos , who was called up by Venezuela for a friendly  with Mexico.

Just got back from the game, as I left at halftime.

Lots of sloppy play given the poor weather conditions. Foothills rang one off the bar about 10 mins in, but didn't show much otherwise. A few crosses that went behind the goal line, not much more. Would guess even possession numbers for the two sides. Outside of the goal, Santa Clarita didn't show much in front of goal, a couple shots that Dilling didn't have to move much for.

Fuck me, it is cold out there. 6 degrees and raining sideways. No shelter from the rain at the Soccer Centre except for the small covered stand for season ticket holders. Would probably estimate the crowd at 300-400, which isn't a big crowd, but given the weather it was fantastic (by comparison, it's probably double that of a PDL game in similar conditions last year).
