CPL new teams speculation

In the past week or so we have had some disheartening things happen including, (i) the Forge appearing to cut back active capacity in 2020 to less than their announced average in 2019 basically confirming that said average probably involved a generous portion of freebies, (ii) an announced crowd of 1200 in Victoria that if anything looked smaller,

Which crowd are you refering to as " announced crowd of 1200 in Victoria"?

Last two (not including today which has no # yet) were :

Sept 4th.....2124

Sept 11th...2384

As for Forge FC, we don't know what the new config will be capacity wise, the club has averaged about 6K without the inaugural match. New Capacity will likely be 6-7K and they can open sections as needed easily for more demand. Makes sense to conscentrate the fans on one side for the atmosphere and broadcast optics so tweaking the stadium config is a good move imho and theres still flexibility. Your freebies comment is conjecture not fact.

All leagues have games where attendances look very sparse because of weather, weekday scheduling, etc. and I've posted pics of some examples this summer from USL and MLS.

Sept 11th has been revised upwards. It was showing as 1200 the day after the game after 2043 had initially been the number released to the media including the Times Colonist. Hope you are not going to try to seriously claim that the stadium was around half full for that game and the FCE one as it was when numbers like that were being announced earlier in the season.

The problem for the league right now is that there have been a whole string of games where attendance has looked unusually sparse. That's what happens when you neglect to have playoffs and you have a runaway leader for that second championship place and no relegation to keep things interesting at the bottom.

Winding this back to the subject matter of the thread given that sort of backdrop and how difficult it is to find suitable stadia having more than 16 teams and how to accomodate them is unlikely to be an issue the league will face any time soon. I suspect they are a lot more concerned right now over whether season ticket holders who have stopped showing up will renew now the novelty factor and the initial wave of enthusiasm have worn off.

If your game highlights are not being shown on ANY Canadian national sports broadcaster because you signed up with a totally different media partner, then you’re not being taken legitimately. “As Seen On TV” is a catchphrase that goes beyond infomercials

So your using a phantom attendance number of 1200 that never happened and pretending its a real number instead of the official attendance number of 2384. Your trying to use that figure of 1200 is an out and out lie and using it like its real is a lowpoint for you, you've lost all credibility.

As for eyeballing how many you think are in the stadium, attendance figures are tickets distributed (sold/comped) not turnstile for pro sports as most knowledgeable fans know.

Agreed.  If you don't know the league exists, you're not going to search for it  If you want to attract casuals and the zillions of people who don't even know the league exists, hiding on the internet isn't the way to do it.  They should be doing what they can to get highlights on TV.  Of course, TV in Canada should also be doing its part, but that's not likely to happen because there's never time after showing half an hour of 'sports' highlights from some other country.

That is a massive problem.

Also trying to charge people $11.50 a month (roughly the same as Netflix) to watch CPL games is something that need to be reconsidered in the off season. To me the subscription should be free and they should be trying to distribute highlight packages to any TV network willing to show it.

You need to reach casual sports fans and if we are being frank it is not really happening. No one outside the base core of CPL fans are subscribing to the service and way too few outside that core is getting any exposure to the league.

I have heard people say that but in fairness i'm not sure that's the case. I shouldn't just assume that.

However even on the local sports casts in Halifax I have never seen a Wanderers Hi-light. That is something they should be pushing hard.

I think it was majority CBC coverage for  TFC until TSN/SNET started sniffing. So until it grows bigger for them, they a) won’t purchase rights b) won’t show highlights

We truly are into George Orwell's Ministry of Truth territory at this point.

Think the Score and Sportsnet had some games as well back in 2007, and CBC was only doing Saturday home games. It was always going to be challenging to get CanPL onto coast-to-coast sports highlights coverage because they don't tend to cover minor leagues and that's how it will be viewed by a lot of people regardless of how the CSA sanctions it as long as MLS is around in the three major markets. Winding things back to the subject of the thread hopefully they don't have too much of an identity crisis over what they are trying to be and contrary to rumours keep expansion fees low so they can get into lots of mid-sized markets similar to Halifax over the next decade or two where local media coverage can make it work.

TSN didn't start broadcasting MLS until the league expanded to Vancouver.

TFC fans often had a lot of the same complaints about TSN in those early years.

People also complained about TFC having games on Gol TV, similar to today's complaints about One Soccer

You really need to stop projecting your performance anxieties onto others.

Honestly have no idea what you are talking about. The optics of the Pacific vs FCE game on CBC on Saturday must have been horrific for you, if you still think there is some sort of rivalry for supremacy going on between the two leagues and that's where you are coming from with that. Personally, I'd like to see both leagues thrive in the years ahead and Canadian soccer go from strength to strength on that basis. CanPL is in a bit of a trough right now but there have been enough positives this year for there to be optimism that they can turn it around. Playoffs to keep almost every team having something to play for through to the end of the regular season is one of the things that MLS gets right and hopefully that will be a lesson learned for year 2.

I doubt that. TSN showed highlights of the Canada/Cuba match.

Anyhow, it would be a huge boost and the greatest advertisement for the league if both TSN and Sportnet would show highlights considering the quality of the league has been pretty good....the build up to that second goal by Attardo yesterday was something. However, you cannot exactly twist there arms into showing it.

Regular exposure on those networks would do a lot for the league's overall attendance IMO.

They also showed highlights of the Canadian Championship.

The problem is if they take the time to show 5 minutes of CPL highlights per weekend on Sportscentre, they might have a bit less time to show highlights of the Milwaukee Brewers vs Colorado Rockies game.
