CPL new teams speculation

Recommended Posts

The irony is as someone who lives in one of the "9" of the area that York 9 would represent is that a Pickering team would be much more of a local team given where I live (eastern Markham) than York 9 would be for me given where they play and where they are apparently hoping to play in (assuming that's somewhere in Vaughan or King City from what I last recall reading).

This is where they're supposed to building a stadium.

Really? In California?

I think you may need to check your map...

Edit for those confused: Further down we discover it's only showing a strange location (19450 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino CA) to me. We have no idea why.

Yeah, I meant York 9 when I was talking about Vaughan or King City. But according to the Google maps image, the Pickering stadium would be less than a 25 minute drive from my house, which is less than half the distance to where York 9 currently play and probably a greater disparity from where the stadium they (York 9) want to build is.

Ahhhh. Apologies, I misunderstood.

So will you have torn allegiances? 😁

Worse has come to worst.

I'm so disappointed and disillusioned as a soccer and CPL fan in Ottawa. I was holding out hope that fences could be mended and that the Fury would move next year or at most the year after. With this it seems at CPL franchise in my city is more of a long term prospect.

The exclusion of the Ottawa market from CPL for a while is unfortunate, but I am not spending any more effort worrying about the Fury.  The reality is that the CPL is up and running.  Support is generally good, and in some cases great.  The level of play is good, and will improve steadily.  Major sponsorships are secured in the long term and all the pieces are in place for sustained success.  OSEG chose not to be a part of that at a time when their participation would have put all parties in an even stronger position.  Given the way the Fury folks dealt with the situation (and Rollins account parallels what most on here observed in the publicly available info and exchanges on social media) I don't blame CPL for not laying down the welcome mat.  Probably better to forgo the market for a while than be strong-armed into a toxic partnership.  And if the Fury and their fans are content playing NY Redbull 2 and Atlanta United 2 (their last 2 games) then so be it.

We lost almost an entire Supporter's group over the Fury not joining CPL and it's showing in the stadium vibe. Attendance looks low, but it usually is until it gets warmer. As I've said elsewhere, the JdG sounded pretty conciliatory at the SSH meeting last month, but at a CPL presentation the following week a CPL staff member was not. Nobody cares to mend fences for what is best for Canadian soccer - this has become personal. It's the same crap that 's been dogging Canadian development for decades with too many egos involved.

I was wondering why the supporter's section has looked so sparse. So disappointing.

Huh...  This image comes through with the Pickering location, but the original post and all the quotes of it are showing Dlive Inc. at 19450 Stevens Creek Blvd #100 in Cupertino, California on my screen...  Weird error.

Thanks for this new post though. It looks proper.

Very odd.

If you haven't checked out the planned development it's very impressive. A casino, two hotels, a 2500 seat theater and tens of thousands of square feet of retail and restaurants. The first phases, the casino, one hotel and the theater are all set to open in 2020.

It's only some dude on twitter saying this. The league's commissioner is on record as saying the following:

https://ottawacitizen.com/sports/soccer/is-ottawas-pro-soccer-future-with-the-canadian-premier-league

“Then, if things change and Ottawa wants to be part of it, that’s great. If not, at one point we’ll have to decide what we want to do about Ottawa. I started off by saying the people of Ottawa deserve to have a team in the Canadian Premier League. It’s Canada’s professional league. I can’t … I don’t see a world where a team from Ottawa is not playing in that league.

All these arguments about Fury attendance, their supporters group, their fan vibe--in a few weeks of CPL we've seen a certain inconsistency, and not exactly enthusiastic full houses either.

We are building in fits and starts and the CPL is not exactly an overwhelming success. It is up and running, that is enough. I'd give it a B+ so far.

So the argument that Fury is somehow paying dearly for their take on things and bad blood towards CPL is not really true. More like a bit tendentious.

CPL had better focus on its franchises, and the league needs to continue to shepherd clubs better, in pretty well everything, to improve details in logistics, pricing, fan services, stadium conditions and amenities. Work on reffing, and work with media.

It just sort of irks me that people want to create a dichotomy between Fury and CPL, when they are actually going through similar dynamics trying to build markets and consolidate support in wavering times.

Edit: I do agree that Fury ownership behaved so badly towards the CPL that they should be shut out, at least for the upcoming years, and the league needs to work diligently on building where it is really wanted and growth will be sustainable. I love the fact there is enthusiasm for Québec right now.

That website looks like an open invitation to organised crime and a permanent population of sex workers.

I am commenting on the overall look, sort of whorehouse chic. I don't know why they think that to sell a major development they have to go for crass styling.

They might want to take their lead from BC Place and put the football pitch half under the casino, so you can go from one to the other without breaking a stilleto.

Even weirder on my computer.  Believe me, there's no room for a stadium there.
